Hi... here is what I need to know... we have digital cable through time warner and the high def dvr as well that they provide. I have a splitter that splits the initial cable connection so 1 line goes to the dvr and the second goes to a dvd recorder. Both systems then out put into the samsung hdtv.

We want to scrap the dvd recorder and get a hdd dvr recorder and we were looking at the Pioneer DVR-660h-k which dosent have a built in atsc tuner.... but from what Im reading that really dosent matter since I already have digital cable....

Will this work in recording all of our tv shows including the HD ones or do I need something else like a QAM tuner ? Thx

If you are going to put the recorder before the TV!!
What ever you use will need a QAM tuner for the digital cable channels most of the newer DVD recorders will do this, but!!
You are limited to the analog and the QAM channels that are in the clear!!
What is in the clear in your area, the locals and some others.(the others will vary by area).
You will not be able to record any hi-def signals.

Your other option will be to put the recorder after the TV.

No DVD recorders can record actual HD. If you want to record actual HD, then you need to see the HDTV Recorders (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=42) forum.

If you don't care about HD, but just want to record your favorite channels, then a DVD recorder will work if you are satisfied with your locals and basic analog (non-HD) channels such as CNN, Fox News, and Discovery. No DVD recorder will tune encrypted HD cable channels like CNN-HD, TNT-HD, USA-HD, SyFy HD, and ESPN-HD. If you want to tune or record HD cable channels, then you need either the cable company box or a CableCard DVR like the TivoHD or Moxi.

Where were you looking to buy the Pioneer 660?

Probably eBay. It's about the only place for them anymore.
