We just hooked up our 7.1 home theater system using the following components:
Receiver: Denon AVR-2309CI (Rcvr)
TV: Panasonic TC-P50G15
Blu-Ray DVD: Panasonic DMP-BD80K (BR)

Currently, we have HDMI cables running from the BR to the Rcvr and Rcvr to the TV. We have our cable set-top box connected directly to the TV using a coax cable. We want to be able to listen to the TV/cable through our home theater system. Our friend says we should be able to do that using the HDMI cable that is connected from the "out monitor" on the Rcvr to the TV, by just setting the Rcvr properly. I think we need to have some type of cable, like an Optical Digital Audio cable, that runs from the cable set-top box to the Rcvr, as well as the coax cable that runs to the TV. I've been studying, and studying, and studying the manuals for both the Rcvr and the TV, and both say we need that extra cable.

Can anyone help us?

Thanks much!!!

well if your cable box supports hdmi i see no reason why you shouldnt be able to use just on hdmi cable from your cable box to your receiver as it support audio thru hdmi

as a simple test just unplug your bluray's hdmi cable and put it into the cable box and turn on both the reciever and tv

What cable box are you using? If it has an HDMI out, then that's all you need, another HDMI cable. If it has some other video connection, you probably will need an optical or digital coaxial cable (depending on the model.) If it doesn't have a digital out, I'd try to see if you can't trade it in to the cable company for one that does.

Yes you need audio run from the cable box to your receiver.

If you've god HD capabilities though you probably want a new cable box if you're just hooked up via a single RG6 run, cause that will look like crap, and if you have an HD package you're certainly not getting HD. At least hook it up component! Then run an audio cable from the new box to the receiver. Or if you get a new box and request one with HDMI, then you can just run HDMI into the receiver directly, and then the current HDMI out that's going to the TV and use the receiver to switch just like you do with BD.

Our cable box is an Amino brand, I think 110 model. It has, on the back, "SPDIF digital out" and "Audio visual out" connections. We're limited to that type until our provider (a local company) wires the rest of the town up for fiber optic.. Once that is done, we will be getting HD cable, and I'm assuming new HD boxes....

Thanks again!

One of these?

Looks like you'll need a digital coaxial cable from the box to the receiver. One of these should work:

Or if you have a yellow RCA plugged video cable lying around, that will work as well.

That's exactly what our cable box looks like!!! We will see if we have one of those digital coax cables and hook it up. Thanks so much!!

Wait, they don't have HD? Where do you live, Bedrock? Tell Fred and Barney I say Hi! lol. I would really try to get an HD box, they MUST have one. You are doing yourself and your Panny a huge disservice.

I know, I know... we need to get into the 21st century :o .... we're trying to wait patiently for HD to get to our neck of the woods... we're looking towards the future... hopefully HD comes in before our cars start flying thru the air...

It looks like it's IPTV, not traditional cable or satellite. They may be slower to roll out the good stuff in certain areas.
