Hi All;

I would be grateful if you'd post pics of your walls, especially if they are 2 or 3-toned faux, or something like Ralph Lauren Suede. Anything along these lines is helpful. Soft, leather-looking multi colour, or 2-colour.

I'm hoping to look at these and pick some colour scheme for both the HT and my living room. I know there are galleries on the web, but honestly, some of the best ones are found on this forum. With almost 300 pages of picture pages to go through, I'd hoped this post might save me a little surfing.

Thanks in advance. Now show off !

Tom.

We did the Ralph Lauren paint in our last house and will do it at some point in out new one as well. Here are some pics of the last house. They don't do it justice though as I was taking these pics to sell the house and was concentrating on getting as much of the room lit up as possible and not showing the suede.

This is our dining room, done in a color no longer available.

We did our family room, entry and hallway in Spitfire.

Hi Mike;

Thanks. I think the suede effect shows up pretty well in the orangy-brown shots, but not in the whiter shade.

I'd use the Ralph Lauren if it came 2 tone. It's a good paint.

Thats paint? Wtf? Thats awesome.

The wife and I were talking about color schemes for the theater the other night. I have always wanted to make it look a little bit like a theater and mentioned material walls. She laughed and said that its likely a really expensive option. I agreed.

But paint that has the suede effect is AWESOME. Although, I would imagine that paint aint cheap either haha

Tom, the suede effect shows up pretty good in the lighter shade as well, but the photo doesn't do it justice.

What do you mean by 2 tone?

Yup, it is paint. It has some particles in it (like sand) for the texture. You apply two coats of paint. The first is just like any other paint, you roll it on. It streaks like crazy but don't fret. The second coat goes on with a 4" brush. You make an 'X' pattern with the brush, covering 80-90% of the first coat. It takes some work, but the end result is nice. Price wise the paint is about $50 a gallon, but you will need twice as much paint too. So for a typical 12x12 room that uses one gallon of paint ($30-$40) it will cost you around $100. It also takes twice as long (or more for a big room, especially with high ceilings).

One nice thing about the suede paint is how well it hides imperfections in the walls. We didn't really have any, but one area that I had noticed a slight tape line completely vanished after the suede paint went up.

At that price, I figure my area would cost about $200 but its totally worth it. It looks amazing. I have never seen that finish before on paint .. mind you, I freaking HATE painting and avoid it like the plague :P

I've never used suede paint (I do like the look), but thought it was easy to scuff/mar.

We had no issues with scuffs. Our daughter was born in April 2005 and we moved out in Feb 2008 so we had a little one running around for 2+ years.

The good thing about any "repairs" (I had a couple of pictures/sconces that we moved so I needed to fill some holes) is that the paint covers it really well. Any additional paint that you apply to the wall "blends" right in. So if you have to do any touch ups, you pull out the paint and the brush, throw some "Xs" on the wall and you are done.

Not sure if this is what you're after but, following are a couple of wall paint treatments my wife and I did in our bedroom and master bath.

This one's done by putting a plastic sheet up against wet paint. I like this and am considering doing similar in part of my HT build. Looks kind of like a leather grained finish:

This one (bath) has a light base coat and then the "pink" highlight is rolled on using one of those cloth covered rollers:

I forgot about this one. It is simply a red base coat (actually 3 of them) and then using a rag to apply a top coat. Has a slight leather look to it, click the picture to see a larger one that shows more detail.

Our house was for sale! ;)

Actually, I have slight OCD so it stays fairly clean, but not as clean as in those pictures. You should have seen our closet. Everything was sorted by color. :cool: House sold in 3 weeks though! :D

Fotto and In2photos;

The bedroom and the brown wall look good. How did you do the plastic trick?

Thanks, Tom.

I was really hoping you weren't going to ask me exactly how I did it:eek:, it was about 7 years ago or so. After some searching, I believe this is it:
http://www.bobvila.com/HowTo_Library/How_to_Apply_a_Leather_Faux_Painting_Technique-Painting-S3766.html
I'm sure we only used one extra glaze color (vs. 2) and I recall having a much bigger sheet of plastic than what they demonstrate with.

You'll get the idea though. Good luck if you do it (it's not very difficult though).
