View Full Version : wdtv2 basics questions..
This box seems to be pretty slick, but I have some basic questions that might've been answered somewhere in the huge wdtv1 thread possibly....First off, the you tube implementation is a blast. Fun stuff there, being able to save/search/log in there..and I like the scrolling preview windows when you search. Hitting one button (power) to turn off BOTH the my book USB drive and the WDTV2 is a nice feature. Questions...I've got about 1200 or so music files , some mp3 and some wma lossless....In all the views by artist, genre, album, folder,etc...I see a sporadic few album cover thumbnails. In windows media player, all 1200 have associated album cover art. I'm a little perplexed why the wdtv2 displays a handful of them versus not all of them...the documentation for adding art is very vague....I assumed that since windows media player gave each one album art (or I added it manually), the wdtv2 would do the same...how about that for a new feature? Since we've got network capability now, why not click a button to go onto to the internet and grab all the tags for each song on your drive? In addition this service could also add all sorts of cool artist info, pics, song info, history/discography about the band/artist and display it as the songs play...as it is, you've got this great big screen , with a rather rudimentary playing interface, per song. It would also be nice to add songs 'on the fly' to the 'now playing' queue.....the other thing I've run into..is that converting wma lossless files to flac, makes it impossible to add tags (most specifically for album thumbnail art) in windows media player. The tag editor is all greyed out. So, now I'm converting files to something useable, but still need a way to update the tags for the thumbnail art...any ideas?
ps - I have my ripped CD's in their own folder, and each appears to have several .jpgs of the cover art, and the rest of the individual mp3's are in the one , big 'music' folder, but all appear to have .jpg's associated with them too..

The WDTV's read album art embedded in idtags. I never touch Windoze Media Player, so am unsure how it does tagging.
I use Tag & Rename to do all mine & they all work perfectly. There are also some good freeware taggers out there. I use album art approx 180 X 180 pix
I'd also recommend ejecting your USB drive BEFORE turning off power.
Ever have a USB drive NOT start up or lock up after shutting off power versus eject first?
I have. Not pretty. Why risk it?

I'll check out Tag & Rename...but does wdtv read a FLAC files tags and display album art? The pdf manual makes it seem that FLAC isn't one of the file formats supported for that purpose...may need to reread though..I still like my idea of wdtv going out to the net, and auto tagging everything with all the littles extras I mentioned , maybe next version...:)

You can do that but only with XBMC! :)
ION with XBMC (if you have the time to configure it well) is the best thing out there!
You can buy a ION at the same price as a Popcorn A110... not at the price of WD TV but ION offers much, much more! ;)

Yes, WD TV can display FLAC/art , as well as mp3. Doesn't seem to be able to do .ogg files yet, though hopefully someday.
As far as file taggers, here's another one that many people like to use & it is freeware besides. I'm used to Tag & Rename & bought it so that's my point of reference.

About your wish for WDTVLive being able to go out on the net & auto tagging
..... :p

Well I'm at a loss here....maybe the WD fella can chime in....I can't get the thumbnails in the artist , album, genre, playlist etc to display anything except for the random few that had them when I first hooked things up...All the files have tags and associated album art...and I've started going 'round and putting in the folder.jpg image as well in the files with the music, but not seeing the album art in the views by artist, album,folder,etc....

That is strange...are the ones that do not show album art the ones that you did yourself using Windows Media Player? I have no knowledge of how WMP works anymore, since that is the first thing I remove when reinstalling Windows, since there are so many "aftermarket" media player for the PC out there that work so much better, and in my experience WMP always seemed to kludge things up. Maybe it applies album art differently than other apps?

Could be...but shouldn't me manually placing the .jpg of the album art in the folder with the music files and naming it folder.jpg show me something somewhere?
