View Full Version : WD TV Live Wont Play .MKV Files Through The Network? HELP !!!
falconman515 10-13-09, 01:48 AM I can watch every other file format on my pc through the network on my new WD Live Player but for some reason it says file unsupported when I try and play a .MKV movie?
I can take the same file and put it on my external hard drive and plug directly into the WD Player and it plays perfect .... but not through the network for some reason!!!
Please help me figure this out cause the whole reason to upgrade from the first WD player to this one was to watch all my .mkv movies without having to transfer them to my external hard drive and watch it that way!
HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Specs on the .mkv files? What codec for video and audio? What network connection are you using? What's the OS of the machines you are sharing from on the network?
I have no problems playing pretty much all the .mkv files over the network (Windows Xp and Vista shares). I have are mostly h.264, 720p, 1080p, DTS, AC3, etc. I don't have any .mkv files that are VC-1, so I don't know about that.
Darius94523 10-13-09, 04:33 AM He's trying to go through media libraries to access the .mkv files. That won't work, you have to setup network shares (shared folders on your network).
falconman515 10-13-09, 02:53 PM He's trying to go through media libraries to access the .mkv files. That won't work, you have to setup network shares (shared folders on your network).
How do I do this?
I am currently accessing all media that is being shared from windows media.... I can see all the stuff that WM is sharing and play everything but .mkv files.
How do I do this... how do I setup networked shared folders?
This is new to me and would love any help I can get on this issue I am having!
falconman515 10-13-09, 04:09 PM Ive read a bit on how to do this but when I try and share a folder it just tells me I cant share this folder.... for every folder I try and share?
Nothing shows up on my WD player under media shares at all?
What am I doing wrong here?

2. Are you the Aministrator on that PC?

Running Vista and yes I believe I am admin... there are no other users on this pc other than me!
i have googled sharing folders on vista and done all the walk throughs and activated sharing and then tried sharing folders... this is what I found ) http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Share-files-and-folders-over-the-network-from-Windows-Vista-Inside-Out )
But every folder i go into the share properties and tell it to share it says :Your Folder Coulnd Not Be Shared" and thats its .... and I dont even know how my WD player is suppose to read my pc cause when I go to the shared folder option there is nothing there.
What firewall do you have on your PC?
falconman515 10-13-09, 05:11 PM What firewall do you have on your PC?
None that I am aware of ... if anything just the built in windows firewall!
Ya the windows firewall is on but thats the only kind of firewall I have running on this PC
Google - vista simple file sharing
Google - vista simple file sharing
True - but if his firewall is blocking by IP - I would recommend him either trying a quick test with the firewall OFF, The reboot the WD then see if the folders show up, According to the poster he cannot see the shares within the same computer so once he can see the shares from the same computer not sure we can help untill then.
falconman515 10-13-09, 05:27 PM Google - vista simple file sharing
Ive done all these steps the problem is I cant get and folder to share.... I ggoled vista simple file sharing and did the complete walk through as stated and once I did all the steps and got the folder to share and clicked share I got the same things folder could not be shared!
I cant get any further after that.... i saw a screenshot of what it says when it says your folder is shared but I dont get that!
FalconMan - try this site 1st hit off of Google - http://www.home-network-help.com/simple-file-sharing.html
If that doesn't work it's possible that your Vista OS is somehow confused,I would try the turning off the firewall just as a test 1st like i said above, if the firewall doesn't work You could do a backup of your files then perform a restore to an early date! We have to get the shares to be seen 1st then will go back to the WD

Ok so i turned off the firewall ... then what are my steps after that? I restarted the wd player and the media shares part still has nothing and I still cant share folders?

From the vista PC can you now enable shares now? Can you see them from the PC From Network Places????
falconman515 10-13-09, 05:41 PM Ok I found this:
goto network and sharing center--manage network connection--right click
on network you are going to share files through
---properties--install--client--client for Microsoft networks--click add
And now the folders says shared but there is still nothing on the WD player?
falconman515 10-13-09, 05:43 PM From the vista PC can you now enable shares now? Can you see them from the PC From Network Places????
Not sure what what this means.... after doing the above the files when I right click them now say shared!
But I dont really know where to go from here... the player still has nothing under network shares.
falconman515 10-13-09, 05:45 PM When i try and do anything and see stuff it says I cant and to contact the administrator of this server to get access?
falconman515 10-13-09, 05:45 PM Reboot the wd
Tried that still nothing under network shares
Appears that you are not the Administrator on the PC ...
To make sure check this article
http://lifehacker.com/341521/enable-vistas-administrator-account
or
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/enable-the-hidden-administrator-account-on-windows-vista/
falconman515 10-13-09, 05:55 PM When I go to the network and sharing center and click on the bottom where it says show me all the shared network folders on this computer it shows up all the folders i told it to share but when I click on them it says
" .............. is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource, contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission"
Is this now another problem?
falconman515 10-13-09, 06:00 PM I'm normally pretty good at this tuff but how do I do this here:
* First you'll need to open a command prompt in administrator mode by right-clicking and choosing "Run as administrator"
* Now type the following command:
net user administrator /active:yes
Cant seem to wrap my little brain around this! :)
falconman515 10-13-09, 06:07 PM when I right click the command prompt there is no run as administrator option?
I am on XP right now but Vistal should be the same if i remember - to find the command pompt - go to Programs - accessories and under accessories you should find the C prompt
falconman515 10-13-09, 06:22 PM Ok i did this and it created a whole new administrator profile which is no good cause there is nothing there?
I have tons of stuff going on this profile and cant just delete this one and create a whole new admin profile!
But either way i did it and went into the admin profile and there is still nothing there .... I open those same folders and click on them and it still gives the same I dont have permissions error!
I am going nuts here!
xeres456 10-13-09, 06:30 PM I had a similar problem with getting shares to work from one computer to the next, so I installed Network Magic and it did the trick. There is a free trial period, so you might want to give it a try.
What had me confused is, when you say mkvs won't play. If avi and mp3 files are playing, then you are selecting Media Servers and not the WD icon for network shares. Windows media player will not stream mkv, but will stream avi, mp3 and a few other file types.

Ya i finally figured out that part... but I just cant seem to get anything from network shares part of the wd player cause something is all crappy on pc end!
Thanks for the info though
falconman515 10-13-09, 06:53 PM This is crazy that I cant seem to figure this out!
ChrisMilne 10-13-09, 10:25 PM I can't get this to work either. WDTV Live sees four shared folders, i have more than 4 shared folders so i have no idea why it sees these and not the other ones. I have added them all to be shared to "everyone". Very frustrating. I tried to add them via Windows Media as well just for kicks.
I shared downloads folder, can see it, i made a folder DVD, can see it. Made a folder MKV CAN NOT see it. I shared pictures, can NOT see it "unless" i'm going through pictures via media server (shared in windows media), i can not see it via network shares. Just the same stupid random 4 shared folders show up, and MKV is never one of them.
Any ideas?
ps im using windows 7
ChrisMilne 10-13-09, 10:27 PM oh, i also can not see any music shared even though the folder is shared in both windows and windows media...this will probably be going back to best buy in the near future as network sharing is the only purpose of this for me.
Gariputo 10-13-09, 10:40 PM when I right click the command prompt there is no run as administrator option?
Try holding down shift when you right click, should give you the run as admin option.
" .............. is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource, contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission"
Does your user have permissions on the folder you're sharing? (Right click on the folder > Properties > Sharing tab > Advanced Sharing button > Permissions button)

Ahha - this was taken from the BrightView Cinetube forum - see the link for Win 7 sharing........... sounds like the BrightView player has the same issue (and i think the same chipset player) seeing shares with Win 7...........

What Gariputo says goes too please check your permissions.......
knightar 10-14-09, 01:08 AM I didn't want to post this in a new topic since its about the network connections also, so here's my problem:
I just bought the WDTV Live today and I've had issues trying to connect to network shares on my Windows 7 machine. I've tested it on three Windows XP systems and both worked perfectly with no issues at all. Has anyone gotten it to work with Windows 7?
I've tried everything ... even re-enabling LM and NTLM authentication didn't work.
Notes:
- I have no firewall enabled, It worked when running a bridged XP running in VMWare.
- The shares work fine on other Windows 7 systems.
- I have 64bit Windows 7 RTM
- Media Server works fine, but MKV doesn't work on it.
Please help =/

falconman515 10-14-09, 02:04 AM oh, i also can not see any music shared even though the folder is shared in both windows and windows media...this will probably be going back to best buy in the near future as network sharing is the only purpose of this for me.
Ok this is what I got so far guys!
Read my previous posts and what the guys told me to do... I created an admin account not sure if that helped at all cause I'm still using my regular account that is called Chris and not Administrator.
If you cant get the files to share do what I did.... find my previous post with a link on how to share folders to network share and go through that process and if you run into the same issue where it wont share do what i had found before:
goto network and sharing center--manage network connection--right click
on network you are going to share files through
---properties--install--client--client for Microsoft networks--click add
This seemed to make my folders that said they couldnt share all the sudden share.... but I ran into errors opening anything and the wd player didnt find nothing..... It was simple fix after about and hour of trying to figure it out after doing all of that............... Restart The Computer ...... DUH .... once I did this all the sudden my network share on the WD player showed mu shared folder!!!!
Now I am running into the same problem that ChrisMilne is ..... It says there is no files in my pictures or my music folders and I can only view pictures and music in the media libraries that I believe shares through windows media.
But I can view my My Videos folder that has all my videos and I can now even view my .MKV movies through the media share folder now!!
But I cant see anything else really like the pictures and music. I know I can just go into media libraries and view it there I guess but that just doesnt seem to make sense!
But my ultimate goal was to get the media share to work so I can view .MKV files through the network and not have put them all on an external HD and plug it into the wd player... cause I cant view .mkv through media libraries cause that runs through the pc codecs and windows media I guess doesnt internally support .mkv movies!
I would like to figure out why this other is happening but atleast if anyone else is having the issues I had there are few links and a few steps to get you started... let me know if I can help any further.
But now onot why media shares doesnt show everything?!?!?!?!?!?
Do we know why this is and what we can do to fix this?
knightar 10-14-09, 02:25 AM This didn't work
Thank you so much, that guide worked perfectly!
Thank you so much, that guide worked perfectly!
Glad i could help - Now i have to get falconman515 up and running
falconman515 - have you tried the network shares on the WD menu? My shared folders from my computer show up on the network shares!
falconman515 - have you tried the network shares on the WD menu? (you will see the name of the PC you are sharing from, then when you enter in you will see your actual shared folders)
falconman515 10-14-09, 02:47 AM falconman515 - have you tried the network shares on the WD menu? My shared folders from my computer show up on the network shares!
My network shares folder now does show up on my WD Player .... but the only problem I know have is what another guy ChrisMilne in the thread is having a problem with... some of the folders say no media found?
I can view the videos folder in video and thank god can view .MKV movies finally but When I go to pictures and click on my pictures folder it says no media found and also when I go to music and click on the my music folder it says the same thing!
We can view these pictures and songs in the media libraries that of course goes through windows media but for some reason we cant view these files or folders in the network shares!
Any ideas on this one!
Yes - Take a Deeeeeeep Breath - will get you going...
What happens if you Unshare the files/folders from Windows Media Player, Do that then make sure you are still sharing your files/folders with your MKVS ETC through Vista...
then reboot the PC - then reboot the WD..
Give feedback
Jimbo0321 10-14-09, 11:58 AM Okay, this is getting to be frustrating now. Last night I was finally able to get the WD Live to pull up my MKVs through network shares. I was able to watch an entire movie last night.
Turned it on this morning, and nothing shows up through network shares. Rebooted the WD Live twice, still no luck. I can get to YouTube, so it's not a networking issue.
The WD Live and my HTPC (XP Pro with network shares) are hardwired to the same ethernet switch. I can also see the network shares from any wired or wireless PC in the house.
Is there hope, or should I just box up the WD Live and take it back to Best Buy?!?
Thanks!
kjgarrison 10-14-09, 12:03 PM If you have not already seen it, take a look on the main WDTV Live thread at a later post by ScottWD. He details some steps that may be helpful with this problem.

I looked at ScottWD's suggestion, but I'm not specifying username. Problem is, I was able to get the network shares to show up, now they don't appear at all. Nothing done to the network or HTPC overnight.
Not happy at all!!!
Are you just sharing folders with XP? or are they going through Windows Media Center?
Jimbo0321 10-14-09, 12:55 PM I'm sharing folders with XP. I've also created network shares (viewable in My Network Places), but the WD Live seemed to find the three (folder) shares off my XP when it was working last night.
I tried sharing through WMP11, but only limited file formats are supported (and not MKVs) so I disabled this option -- it was showing up in WD Live under Media Servers, but only listing 4 AVI files.
Thanks!

1.Have you Rebooted since you disabled the sharing with Windows Media Center?
2.Have you allowed the IP of the WD in your firewall Software?
3. The Network shares after a reboot can still be seen from My Network Places?
ChrisMilne 10-14-09, 01:56 PM i have to reboot the PC and the device often to see certain folders, in this case the one with the MKV. I have 4 folders that always show up, 2 folders with WMV and HD WMV content i created a long time ago, a downloads folder which i share with another computer in the house and my newly created DVD folder (which doesnt contain media files). The 5th folder with MKV sporadically appears. I have other shares on the computer that don't show up - which i don't really care about, but i don't know why the Downloads folder always appears..maybe some hidden avi, or photo in there and the WD TV scans shares for any media file?
My files are stuttering sometimes too...not sure if that is because i'm using a powerline network connection (can't hardwire it to my downstairs). Though one video stuttered straight off the local HD too (17gb mkv).
My music and pictures did show up again later. After one of the many reboots (of the computer i think). After the stuttering started i had all i could take for one night. I bet when i try it today my mkv folder will be gone as well as my music and pictures
Does anyone know if you are ripping your own bluray is it better to go to mkv for size or just stick with straight rip or ISO - for non stuttering that is?
ChrisMilne 10-14-09, 01:59 PM I was thinking of getting one of those HP Windows Home servers...god i wonder if that would help or hurt.
Are the PCH devices this tough with network shares? I was holding out for the 200, but it seems to be buggy too, don't feel like paying a lot for the 110 which is pretty old now.
doctor media 10-14-09, 02:24 PM This thread has nothing to do with WD TV Live, as it has no problems playing mkv files over the network. You should close the thread and start one with a proper title.

Ok we are getting somewhere - go buy a network cable long enough to reach downstairs, lets eliminate the powerline adapter. (( testing )):):):)
I have a sneaky suspicion about the powerline adapter!!!!!

Doctor somewhat true - and i understand the concern - I have resolved 2 peoples issues on this actual post - Chris - falconman have some unique issues happening and I agree it doesn't appear to be WD related per my WD LIVE streams MKV'S with no issues, Just dumping this thread is there choice!
I am just trying to help :D

Everdog 10-14-09, 03:00 PM I am using XP to share multiple folders and my WDTV Live only sees 2 of them. When I get home I am going to try a few of the suggestions here.
Also, I have the Asus O!Play and it can see ALL my shares and play files from every one of them.
Also, can anyone suggest the best DLNA sever?

Don't think it's entirely a networking issue, lots of people seem to be having the same or similar issue. My WD intermittently saw my shares, now can't see them at all.
FYI -- my Seagate player has no problems seeing my shares, even now when my WD can't. Only problem is the Seagate can't hold sync with HDMI in my setup so it's gotta go back.
Thanks!

Jimbo - OK so are you going to try the long Ethernet cable from the Router to the WD?
Jimbo0321 10-14-09, 05:05 PM Jimbo - OK so are you going to try the long Ethernet cable from the Router to the WD?
It is plugged in with an ethernet cable, to the same switch as the HTPC. Family room equipment rack is right above the theater/HTPC rack. 25' cable, network shares easily accessible from Seagate media player. Also, all wired and wireless PCs in my house can access these shares.
Thanks!
So you are totally bypassed / NO Powerline Adapter?
Gariputo 10-14-09, 06:23 PM So you are totally bypassed / NO Powerline Adapter?
I think it's Chris that has the Powerline. :)
knightar 10-14-09, 06:36 PM Also, can anyone suggest the best DLNA sever?
Please note that as far as I know, no DLNA server supports the MKV format; At least that was the problem I had with DLNA and what I've heard from others.
Jimbo0321 10-14-09, 09:46 PM So you are totally bypassed / NO Powerline Adapter?
The mystery continues...
Came home a little while ago, turned on the WD and the network shares were there. Didn't touch any settings on the WD or HTPC.
1080p MKV playing fine for the last hour. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Thanks for the help, guys. Hopefully network shares access will stabilize.

That's really odd, does your computer with the shares ever go into standby (I occasionally can't connect to shares on resume and have to reboot)?

No, it's my HTPC and it's on all the time, no screen saver or anything. Very, very stable computer, and I can access the shares anytime from any of my laptops or desktops.
Hopefully the WD will continue to see the shares and we'll just forget about the earlier issues.
Thanks!
falconman515 10-17-09, 01:46 AM I still am having the pictures / music issue with my shares! It just says they are empty but when i go to media library that shares through media player I can see them!
My big thing was being able to share my video folder and play .MKV which I now can so I am happy just wish it worked perfect!
Any thoughts on why it says folders are empty when my network shares ee's the folders and the correct folder name but tells me nothing is in there?
Thanks guys!
falconman515 10-18-09, 05:11 AM Set your folder under your shared permissions to "Everyone" then your media will show up on network shares and not say no media found!
I had mine shared just with my name on my PC ... but the dropdown had everyone and when I added that one it all showed up on the wd player!
Hope that helps!
JimmyCrack 10-22-09, 12:10 PM The LIVE WDTV see the PC under the network folder setting but asks for a NAS user name and password. Which user name/pwd is this? The windows VISTA admin account?
moimeme 10-24-09, 02:01 PM Install DivX, media player will see .mkv file, so WD TV will too.
KeithGP 11-05-09, 03:19 PM When I turned off my firewall, my MKV 1080p files seem to stream without interruption so far. Is there some setting I can put in the firewall so that I can leave it on? I hate just running with no firewall on!
