So a few weeks ago my wife, on her own, came up to me and told me she wanted a new plasma and sound system in the family room. After picking my jaw up off the floor I got to work but I've reached a sticking point and would like some friendly input.
So far I've purchased a Panasonic G15, Onkyo 707, and PS3, I'm now looking at speakers. This is where I could use some assistance.
My room is 14 x 27 with 13' celings, hardwood floors with a very large area rug, leather couches and apolstered chairs. The room has a very slight echo but the carpet has done a great job of controlling it. This room is not intended to be a home theater. General idea is to be able to watch standard tv, movies on occassion, and most importantly have it for entertainment. So this means lots of concert dvd/blu-rays and straight music. TV is mounted above the fireplace but obviously have plenty of room to take care of neck strain.
I also have a budget, of course. The top end being around $1000 for the speakers. I know this isn't much but its what I have. Originally I was going to do 5.1 and just buy a system such as the ProCinema 600 or 800. I think I'm moving away from that though because of the poor acoustics in the room. So this has me thinking to buy seperates and start with a left, right, center, and sub, thinking that this will be enought to produce good sound for our general tv watching and for background music etc during parties.
Currently lookin at the Paradigm Atom's, Klipsch RB-61, and the Axiom W22 on wall speakers. I've listened to all but the Axiom's and enjoy the very different sound of both. I'm very interested to hear what others would do in this situation, I'm very open for ideas just looking to act quickly as the installers come next week to run to install the tv and run all the wire to the equipment room.
