I have a question to the entry door.

I have a rough opening of 34" (largest I could make). The wall is thick with 2 layers of 5/8" Drywall on both sides of a 2x6.

roughly a total of 8".

- My thought was to put a 3/4" x 9" (allow for 1" wall treatment on inside) oak board around the inside of the rough opening to be stained.

- Then a solid slab on outdoor sealed frame to make a 30" door into the theater.

- The door will open into the theater so my plan is to have the door frame set in the additional oak frame at a normal distance from the interior wall so the door opens properly. )From the outside it will look like a deep door well.)

I know 30" is slightly small but most of the furniture, speakers, screen willl be in the room prior to hanging the door.

Is that what most people are doing with such thick theater walls?

Thank you in advance.

Are you going to make the door yourself? A 30 inch door could be hard to find. Right now, you should be able to fit a prehung 32 inch door, which gives you plenty of options. A 30" door might not give you any or very few options.

If I went with a 32" door, I would have to attach all the hardware and stop molding to the 3/4 x 8 inch false jam. I am not sure if I am up to that or not. I will see what I can find in a solid 30" slab but you are correct, it might be tough. Chances are I will add a layer of 3/4" MDF to the inside face of the whole door for mass if I can still get it to open correctly.

I am just curious on how people deal with that thick of a wall for doors. I may have to have someone customize one by the sounds of it.

I have a wall that's at least 10" thick. Hang the door so that it will swing the way you want it to and trim out the rest.

You can see the depth of my wall by following the link in my signature. (although, ignore the spots on the door that have since been painted! )

Best of luck.
