Look up a "Drywall Supplier/Supply House" for your area in the yellow pages or locate a distributor here:
http://www.armstrong.com/commceilingsna/locate_distributor.jsp
You didn't specify if you needed 2' x 2' or 2' x 4' tiles. The Armstrong #'s are as follows for "standard" 15/16" grid. :
#769 - Armstrong Cortega Black 2' x 4'
http://www.armstrong.com/commceilingsna/select_a_color.jsp?passUrl=%2Fcommceilingsna%2Fceiling_famil y_detail.jsp%3FproductLineId%3D11%26typeId%3D1&failUrl=%2Fcommceilingsna%2Fceiling_family_detail.jsp%3Fprod uctLineId%3D11%26typeId%3D1&type=item&item_id=45033
If you have a 2' x 2' layout, just cut the 2' x 4' tiles in half.......

Lowes can order to you black tiles
or you can try ceilume. They have awsome, but expensive tiles

I think that's what he meant by "thin, cheap plastic."
To OP, don't know if you have any Menards around you, but when getting the metal ceiling grids from them one day, I saw they had a display of "decorator" tiles. Didn't look too close, but while they were not just regular "classroom" fiber tiles, they had thickness/mass to them, and they came in assorted colors. Don't know about the price, but I would guess they are more than classroom tiles.

The only way to do this is to spray the tiles black.I being a pro painter have a airless sprayer. It takes little time to spray them with a airless. You can rent one at most paint stores and Home depots. This is what I did for my HT.White tiles are so much cheaper. And you can get any type from the cheapest to the best.A gallon will do about 24 tiles.
