No, just a roadblock, much like the custom soundtracks thing. Also probably tech issues considering all the bandwidth cross-game chat would start using needs to be allocated for and that it wasn't originally planned for on PSN.

It was probably on purpose (if true). If clintz was right and he was just missing a word, why not edit the post and say sorry? If it's true and leaking it was a mistake, why not edit the post and say sorry for some convincing damage control? The outright deletion seems an odd choice, and to me says it was on purpose.

Not so much as bandwith as much as memory, since it needs to be implemented to run in the XMB program thats running besides a game simultaneously.

I'm sure that much voice is a lot of bandwidth that Sony must account for as well, though, on top of memory to run it simultaneously.

Unless voice chat is P2P and never runs through the PSN network.

excuse my newbness, but what is "cross game chat"?

i have no idea what that means.

I never bought all the talk about Microsoft having patents on cross game chat and custom soundtracks. The concept of that is idiotic. How can you patent being able to play your own mp3s while playing a game? I guess Microsoft is patenting a computer doing more than 1 thing at the same time. And the same thing with cross game chat, nobody has a patent for talking over the internet. Whether or not you're playing a game at the time is of no consequence.

It means you can talk with any online friends even the two (or more) of you might playing different games.

You'd be surprised all the stupid patents there are around, and yes people do successful claim royalties or barter patent infringements.

Yay we got another feature that hardly anyone will use, all it does it drop another talking point for those with nefarious motives.

I'd recommend reading up on our absolutely idiotic patent system.

It is ridiculous. Were at the point where you can patent abstract thoughts and ideas on a imaginary system, then get paid for it when someone finally comes up with the actual product or device.

I'm all for patenting code, and form, but function?

Cross game chat seems counter productive to the whole point of having in game communication, teamwork. Yes it would be cool to talk to a friend who is playing MW2 while I am playing KZ2. But I really should be talking to my squad...:)

I'd like it just for the ability to setup games with friends. A party chat system would be good for those games that are a little more difficult to join friends with. I'm terrible with the text typing - takes me an eternity to write a sentence on there.

The type of people who are into facebook and twitter are the same type of people who can play halo over and over and over again. As far as I'm concerned I hope the PS3 never gets those features. I'd rather the games for this system not cater to the losest common denominator.

That said, it still needs netflix. If I didn't have to pay for gold access to have netflix I'd probably actually sign up for the service...I don't know why netflix hasn't jumped on the ps3 train yet.

PSN has dedicated voice chat now, right? You can have 4 people chatting at once I think. You can't be running a game when you use it, but the function is there and it works great. Why anyone wants this with a game running is beyond me, and it going to ruin multiplayer chat.

Are there people so ADD that a video game alone cannot hold their attention?

Are there people that just scream blood curdling screams at the top of their lungs into the mic during COD?

I think you know the answer.

It's nice to be able to start chat with a friend that jumps online while you're in the middle a game without having to end the game before you're ready. Nothing ridiculous about that is there?

I would probably only use this if I'm playing a singleplayer game and my friend is playing some other singleplayer game.

Same here...even then I would probably only use it if I had something important to chat about for some reason. Otherwise, would just send a message thru the PSN. 99.9% of the time I'm only going to chat with someone while not playing a game, or while playing a game with them.

Did I mention custom soundtracks would be uber-awesome??? Those 75 gigs worth of music on my PS3 sure would get more use...

The funny thing is the PS3 already has these features.

I would only use this if I were playing a game with people on my friends list.

Especially if it's a game made by DICE.

Its not something Im going crazy over but Im sure I'll use it. Especially once FFXIII comes out. I can see me and my brother just leaving the chat on if we're both playing at once until something cool happens. then talking about it. When I have my headset on in most games I sit silently anyway, unless im trash talking but that doesnt happen often.

I like the idea from the standpoint of playing a single player game alongside a buddy who is also playing. for example if you and i a both playing batman:arkham, or fallout 3, or ratchet&clank then we can talk randomly and share thoughts and tips about the game. i personally think fallout would be a blast with one or two buddies on chat and playing at the same time.

In order to have cross game chat, that would mean that one would have to have a party system that is compatable with every game. The party system works great, it helps co-ordinate gameplay, setting up games, recognizing when some one drops, etc. Whats funny is that once you are used to party chat, things seems to get boring when you play by yourself. Single player games, especially when you replay them for what ever reason, becomes almost mindless fun. Frequently we have 8 people in a party, some teamed up playing same games, many playing different things, but we end up chatting about anything (football, politics, women, movies, etc). At the same time it is useful for asking help at challenging points in a game (solve a puzzle that has been hard, find that missing item, etc).

the best part is not hearing the screaming and profanity that is frequently heard during multiplayer gaming. Whenever we have serious gaming, we just switch to game chat, but stay in our respective parties. I would not call it a must have feature, but certainly a feature that once you have, and use, it is great to have. Gaming to me has become a social event. On top of the fun playing the game, chatting with friends cross games is even better (we don't all want to play the exact same game every time, thus, we can do our own thing and still enjoy each others company).

Actually it wouldn't need a party system. It would run exactly how the text chat (not text messages) work on the PSN right now.
