hey guys, 60GB PS3, playing MGS1 tonight and the game screen is off to teh right and down, not centered. i can still see everything, but damn thats annoying! anybody know of a way to move it?

BTW this is in "full screen" mode via component. in normal mode it is centered, but too far down. plus i cant stand the black bars on the sides.

Move your TV or close your left eye.

Are you using a LCD, PDP or an older RPTV?

It's been discussed a long time ago how PS1/PS2 developers wouldn't use the full resolution available to them to save processing power. At the time of the PS1/PS2 most TV's incorporated overscan, meaning a certain percentage of the screen was outside the viewing area. Developers knowing people wouldn't be seeing the full image opted to use less of the resolution available.

With newer TVs using less overscan or none at all we are seeing what the developers were leaving out in the last generation of games. PS1/PS2 games played on a TVs with little or no overscan will show black bars on the left and right, or even possibly on the top and bottom. There's nothing really wrong with the TV or the way the game is displayed, it's just how the games were made at that time.

Or it could be just that your TV is not centering the image. :)

Does the PS3 spit out proper 240p for PSX games, as they were originally designed for? A lot of HDTV's choke on 240p and would be my first instinct as to the source of the problem. Is there an option to have the PS3 scale PSX output to 480p or greater?

Like eclipz said, we need to know your TV type to eliminate that as the problem. If it's a CRT HDTV I can almost guarantee that's the issue. Late model Sony HD CRTs for example had individual customizeable geometry and focus parameters for not only each input, but each resolution for each input. If this is your problem you'll have to go into the service menu and align the vertical and horizontal for each resolution and input you use.

Good call on the geometry. It's my guess is he has a CRT HDTV. I had that issue with my Toshiba 57HX83. I used a calibration DVD (Avia) to see what my overscan was and check out the geometry. The image needed to be moved over a couple inches to be centered properly. Going into the service menu on these old CRT HDTV isn't for the faint of heart, but you can usually find the service menu codes online for specific sets. Then only change what you need to change and nothing else.
