View Full Version : Numerous WDTV LIve issues (lockups, can't see shares, etc.)
Everdog 10-15-09, 09:36 AM OK, I must be a masochist because I bought 2 of these.
Here are the problems I am having:
1) Can only see 2 shares on my XP machine. I tried everything and still can’t get my most important shares to be found. I can see them from my other PC , laptop, xbox, and Asus O!Play (that I was going to return but now might not).
2) Constant lockups. I’ll select a video and get the blue circle thing and that’s it. That circle thing will turn forever, but no video. If I turn it off with the remote and go back it will still be stuck on the blue circle. I have to unplug the thing to get it work. Then there is a good chance it will play the video that it locked up on.
3) Video freezing. Last night I tried to watch a show and 4 times the video froze while the sound kept going. If I stop and resume, it takes me back to the frozen video. I have to stop, start over and then fast forward to get back to where I was.
4) Wi-fi issues. If I watch an SD video over wi-fi, it will play just fine until there is a brief glitch. Then it might stutter for a second and the sound will turn off. The only want to get the sound back is to stop the video and resume. The strange part is this happens with HD video too. I am able to watch most of my HD content over wireless for about 5 minutes, but then it stutters and I lose the sound. I then tired it with a very low bit-rate SD Divx file and the same thing happened.
Is anyone else experiencing these or similar problems? Also, I changed the name of my 2nd box (network conflict?) thinking that my help, but no luck.
mozstrous 10-15-09, 10:27 AM I set mine up yesterday too and I'm seeing similar issues:
1) Can only see 2 shares on my XP machine. I tried everything and still can’t get my most important shares to be found. I can see them from my other PC , laptop, xbox, and Asus O!Play (that I was going to return but now might not).
I can only see 6 folders out 10 that are shared and visible through other devices
2) Constant lockups. I’ll select a video and get the blue circle thing and that’s it. That circle thing will turn forever, but no video. If I turn it off with the remote and go back it will still be stuck on the blue circle. I have to unplug the thing to get it work. I was getting lockups when I first started streaming 1080p through a network share, I disabled Avast AVG network shield and it seemed to make it better, I've only briefly tested tversity and it seems to be better still. I'm still getting lockups when streaming files with HD audio though...
I haven't seen any of your (3) and (4) symptoms...
christoofar 10-15-09, 10:39 AM Just curious if your wireless is G or N ?
Everdog 10-15-09, 10:40 AM ... I disabled Avast AVG network shield and it seemed to make it better, ...
I'll try that and see if it helps.

G for now. That's why I was surprised I could play HD (for a few minutes).
mozstrous 10-15-09, 12:43 PM oh... I'm using cat5 and still having problems with high bandwidth 1080p files, I guess you must be playing 720p over 802.11g?
there cant be any chance of playing 1080p over wifi (g at least) can there?? I thought you'd struggle with n tbh...

It's my impression that N is going to be the only way to get anything hi rez to stream properly. WD is only listing N usb adapters to use with it.

I bought an N usb adapter, but my router is G. I need to upgrade it. I am was just surprised that small SD Divx files have issues...at least for me.
matt314159 10-15-09, 06:08 PM I'm also having a hard time getting it to see all my shared folders. I set it up with five yesterday and after some hooplah, finally got it working with those five.
Then I tried to add a couple more today and it won't see them, no matter what i try. I've been trying for the last half hour to get this thing to see more than my 5 original shares that I got working yesterday. I cleared all shares on my 'puter and started over and here are the results:
I removed all shares, and refreshed the network list on the Live and it showed they were gone.
Then I added a share. Refreshed the Live, and a share showed up.
Added another share. Refreshed the Live, and the new share showed up.

We're back up to five.
Added another share. Refreshed the Live, and only the first five shares showed up.

Restarted both the computer and the live, as well as my router, several times in hope something was fouling it up that I could fix but dang if this doesn't beat all. I've got the exact same permissions set for each share, but it just sees the first five that I set up.
rick19011 10-15-09, 06:09 PM That's western digital for ya,
Took mine back and got the Xtreamer, its perfect.

I had the same problem. The simple solution was to make one master folder and then place all the other 7 or eight folders I wanted to share as subfolders. Problem solved. I can now see over a hundred folders from my WDTV2.
matt314159 10-15-09, 07:29 PM yeah I did that as a workaround, just shared the entire drive. But that involves more button presses on the remote every time I want to navigate to a video.
on my WDTV 1 with ext3-boot, everything was mapped right to the root so you just hit videos, HDD1, and the individual folders were all listed right there. It's more cumbersome this way. I'm hoping future fw releases fix the problem, or that they get an ext3-boot setup running on the Live soon. ScottWD said they were going to release the gpl code soon.

I like that idea, but all my media will not fit on one drive.
I did fix this problem though. I turned off all firewalls, recreated my shares, found them with the WDTV Live, and then turned the firewall settings back on.
This may help some of my other problems too. I don't trust playing movies over upnp servers. I would much rather play them straight from a share.
pollux13 10-17-09, 07:51 AM Share the drive using a D1, D2, D3, etc naming convention.
You can getup to 9 shares this way.
