Hi Guys,
I need the some help/suggestion about my problem i am facing. Here is my set up

verizon fios - set-top box to sony tv using HDMI cable
from TV optical out to sony Receiver optical in.

If i connected like that, i dont see my receiver getting the dolby 5.1 signal from the optical output. It is always showing Linear PCM.

Any set up i need to do, i think it should work out of the box.

pls let me know

thanks

Typically DD does not "passthrough" the TV from HDMI. The optical out will only pass DD "bitstream" when using the TV's internal tuner.

Connect the FiOS box directly to the AVR using optical or digital coax.

thanks Ratman for the quick answer. In that case, what is the use of having Optical out from the TV? Even the PCM out is not 5.1.
I just was trying to use my old receiver on my 10 year old son's TV room. I just want to avoid all the connections to the receiver. Infact that tv takes lots of inputs - PS3 , HD-DVD player, fios Box through HDMI and also, using component video, I connected PS2 and Nintendo Wii and using composite video i have Game Cube. with all these inputs i don't want to connect the audio's to this old receiver.
I guess i have to settle down with bitstream from that optical out.
please advice anything i can try on this

Many people (I suspect a majority) of people still simply use their TV's speakers for their audio.

If you want 5.1 audio, you are going to have to run separate audio connections to the receiver from those devices which are passing 5.1 audio. Do all the gaming consoles (and games) pass true 5.1 audio? Does your 10yo really need true 5.1 audio? Will PLII not suffice?

thank you sivadselim. I appreciate you for taking time to answer my question. I guess 5.1 is not really necessary in that room. I was just curious why optical output is not providing a 5.1 output which is being input to the TV by the HDMI cable.
thank you

-BalajiYou might be surprised at how good PLII can sound. Especially to a 10yo.

To repeat...
Most TV's will not "passthrough" DD (bitstream) from external sources (IE HDMI). DD will only be provided when using the TV's internal tuner.

As you have noted, all "external" audio sources are converted to PCM stereo.

As suggested, run separate digital audio cables from each device directly to the audio receiver... or enjoy DPL for surround if adding additional cables is a major issue.
