Actually no (IMHO), just use the semi-official P61 megapack, which has (as far IMS goes) YT access, movie jukebox, shoutcast, XSPF playlist support, all the official ACR IMS, metafeeds and xlive.
The P61 firmware will also bitstream core HD-Audio.

If there is something lacking in P61 that is in ACR 4824 it would be the timeline navigation, which I find it a super convenient feature.

Where can I get the semi-official P61 megapack? Thanks!

Can anybody confirm if PBO:

1. plays high bit rate blu-ray ISOs without stutter
2. Offers menu support for Blu ray ISOs
3. Offers on-the-fly switching of output resolutions

currently I use WDTV and it stutters with anything over 40Mb/s.

I don't use BD ISO's so I can't offer any help there- but you can research it on the Patriot Memory forum: http://www.patriotmem.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=14 and the PBO wiki: http://patriot-box-office.wikidot.com/forum:start

As far as "on-the-fly switching of output resolutions" it's done through the menu options- but I use a Harmony remote and the "ACRBO" alternate firmware, so the OEM PBO firmware may be different.

Agree on the "steal" part but the firmware would benefit greatly from at least one improvement.

I have a hard time figuring out where the selection bar is at in the browser. It's too faint of a highlight for me unless it is at the "Return" position.

Finally received my box and very pleased so far. I'm still on stock firmware. What settings do you guys use for video playback? I output to receiver via hdmi than to 1080p plasma. Seems like with 'HDMI auto' the box presets contrast and brightness to 25.

I use the ACRBO FW- on 1080p 60 Hz manual, palsma mode "off", all video presets on 25, except brightness on 26. I have a LCD TV.

Seriously consider the ACRBO firmware- the GUI is soooo much nicer than the stock PBO FW.

1 - from a usb hdd no problems - but over wired (at least for me) some are fine and others stutter - this isn't an issue for me because I stream mostly MKVs over wired and 95% of the BD MKVs are fine - the other 5% stutter infrequently and are watchable

If you brick the PBO during flash update- the <$10 device gmd024 linked will enable you to recover from your computers USB port.

I think it was more relevant in the early cross flash/hacking cycle, but AFAIK, the current ACRBO FW gets flashed the same way as the factory PBO FW, is as stable as the factory PBO firmware- and has been applied by plenty of PBO owners. At this point in the FW development- you're as likely to brick your PBO while updating the factory FW as you are cross flashing with the ACRBO FW. But, it's nice to know that you can recover with a sub $10 device if things go really wrong.

The ACRBO FW is patched to let you use the PBO OEM remote. Unfortunately, the ACRBO FW doesn't exactly match the OEM PBO buttons- for example; the Eject button on the PBO remote brings up the screen size adjustment menu, etc.. So it's a bit confusing when programming to the Harmony remote. When you set it up on your Harmony- it's under: /Computer/Media Center PC/Patriot/ PCMPBO25. Here's my customizations on my Harmony One remote for the ACRBO patched PBO Media player...

For the "Customize Buttons" feature (I have the Harmony One remote- you may not have the same keys on your Harmony remote) I assigned:

Exit button as: Return
˄ and ˅ toggle button (directly under the LCD) as: Eject - which adjusts screen size
Info button as: Display
OK button as: Enter
Channel Up button as: CM Skip
Channel Down button as: InsReplay
Skip Back button as: Return
Plus button as: Home
E button as: Enter
All other buttons as assigned by default.

Yup- that's the correct FW file.

I use the ACRBO FW mainly because it has timeline navigation (press nav < or > buttons to bring up onscreen timeline then press OK once you're at the point in the media you're looking for) which the official PBO FW lacks. And, IMO- the ACRBO GUI looks 100x better than the drab official PBO GUI.

The screen went blank when I played the rmvb file and I can hear only the sound. I don't want to mess it up with mod or fw upgrade just yet unless it is absolutely necessary at this point to get it to play rmvb format. What possibly can I do wrong here? The unit system revision is 18-61 with boot code 0027 is this old fw?

Try a different file. I play rmvb file with this box all the time. Make sure you are playing rmvb up to 720p but not higher. You have already the latest bootcode (27) and pretty reason firmware already.

Hmm, I thought I seen somewhere that some firmware versions lets you bit stream Tru-HD and DTS-MA in stereo only which I agree is counterintuitive.

So, this boils down to the rmvb and wmv files that failed to play initially having higher resolutions?
How do I know if a file is 720p or not or what is its fps, RV40 (what is RV btw?)? What software should I use? Also, any good free software available to downgrade a file resolution? If this player can't even play such regular video file, why does it attract so much attention I wonder. I'm just somewhat disappointed.

On a side note, my TV can't detect the hdmi connection on this player and I had to unplug the HDMI from the TV and reconnect it back to get the unit working. Is this normal?

I know the PBO always powers up in "ON" and not standby.

Does anyone know if any of the 3rd party firmwares can force the box to boot up and immediately go to standby when initially powered? Is it even possible to put the box in standby via software?

I'm installing the PBO in my car, for the kids rear-enteratinment system, and would prefer it not to always be "ON" unless someone is actually using it. Since the power switch is in the back, it limits where I can install the box.

Stock firmware 61 does have it, its just disabled by default, you just need to enable it using this fix.

I have external portable harddrive connected to this media player so I copied file but it does not reconganize wpl. m3u file shows but does not play.

I recently picked up a PBO as well for my Viera 54vt25 as I was coming from a Samsung which best asset is the mediaplay that allowed me to play literally everything I've thrown at it. This is my happy medium. I searched the thread for answers but couldn't find any so I wanted to ask for those with this TV how some things were handled:

1) I'm still breaking in the TV and tomorrow it should be done but I quickly plugged in the PBO through my receiver to the HDMI port and it plays fine with surround sound. I do plan to use d-nice's settings after the breakin. I noticed that there are individual video/contrast/hue/etc settings on the PBO, should I leave those as is? My goal is to play content through the PBO while retaining the calibration quality of the TV with d-nice's calibration settings.

Like do I need to change settings in PBO or can I leave it and it would be the same pq/colors/blacks/etc as if I played a blu-ray on my ps3.

2) I tried playing a '3d half sbs' mkv blu ray on it and it played fine, I initally saw two screens then flipped some of the 3d settings around to combine the picture. I wasn't sure if it was 3d because I havent opened my 3d glasses yet but does someone with experience with PBO or WDLive know which settings to pick under 3d settings to see the 3d half svs mkv?

Thanks!

No two devices are created equal ;)
If you have calibrated your TV with your ps3 as an input, your should recalibrate once more with the PBO as input, that said, because the PBO has separate calibration controls you can leave your TV settings and only recalibrate the PBO

Chose the proper settings on your TV, the PBO will just send the video stream as is (SBS or TnB)

I have just purchased my fourth box...2 for the house and 2 given as gifts. I really like the simplicity and features, but I'm now ready to move beyond stock FW and see what else is out there.

Would anyone care to comment on the best and/or easiest method of installing a movie jukebox on the PBO? Is there really only the one option?

This is what I've found so fa (am I answering my own questions?)r:
MovieJukebox with P61 (using using tvixie2playon) (http://www.patriotmemory.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5550)
MovieJukebox with AC Ryan (using TViXiE2Playon!HD) (http://www.acryan.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=45544#p45544)
More Directions with TViXiE2Playon!HD (http://www.patriotmem.com/forums/showpost.php?p=27570&postcount=174)

Also, after looking for info and finding this guide (http://www.acryan.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=5305), I still have 2 unanswered questions:
-Does each movie REALLY have to be in it's own folder?? All of my movies are in one folder titled HD Movies and I'd prefer not to have to create 200+ folders.
-Can I use this on a network shared hard drive, rather than attached USB drive?

Thanks!

I have just purchased my fourth box...2 for the house and 2 given as gifts. I really like the simplicity and features, but I'm now ready to move beyond stock FW and see what else is out there.

Would anyone care to comment on the best and/or easiest method of installing a movie jukebox on the PBO? Is there really only the one option?

This is what I've found so fa (am I answering my own questions?)r:
MovieJukebox with P61 (using using tvixie2playon) (http://www.patriotmemory.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5550)
MovieJukebox with AC Ryan (using TViXiE2Playon!HD) (http://www.acryan.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=45544#p45544)
More Directions with TViXiE2Playon!HD (http://www.patriotmem.com/forums/showpost.php?p=27570&postcount=174)

Also, after looking for info and finding this guide (http://www.acryan.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=5305), I still have 2 unanswered questions:
-Does each movie REALLY have to be in it's own folder?? All of my movies are in one folder titled HD Movies and I'd prefer not to have to create 200+ folders.
-Can I use this on a network shared hard drive, rather than attached USB drive?

Thanks!

If you have a recent one it may have the 1073DD C+ Realtek chip which is capable of HD Audio decoding so you could give the medeBO f/w flash a whirl. You should know that these f/w are not supported by Patriot but not to worry, you can serially hack into the board itself to un-brick it for about $6 in parts... There's a link for that on that site too.

It is best to have your movies in separate folders because when you scrape metadata the scraper will create additional files for the screen shots, thumbnails and movie info data. If these aren't in separate folders you will have a mess on your hands.

Why does the PB0 always turn on when it sees any IR signal for any other device? Is there any way to prohibit this?

Rick

I never shut it off so this isn't an issue for me.

Here's a kicker for you. I bought one from Newegg and it came with the 1073DD C+ chip and flashed medeo on it. Works FANTASTIC and bitstreams the high def audio codecs. Liked it so much bought another one a few months later from Amazon and while it had a later manufacturer serial number it did NOT have the "+" chip in it! I was kinda bummed about that. And the only real easy way I know to find out if it has the "+" chip is to flash the medeo firmware and check in the status menu. But if you DO get a good one, you will love it!

I have just got my PBO last week. By first try I didn't got any picture via HDMI. The PBO is connected to LG 32LD450.
Trying with 720p it did but after restart the picture is gone. I have to change the tv-system blindly (press the button twice and wait).
I have updated it with the last firmware but nothing changed.
Last weekend I bought a new HDMI cable the best I can get here locally and the result is I can get the 1080i but still no 1080p.
Can someone help ?

Do you know the bootcode of it? Try pressing "Stop" and then "Pause".
Most of the HDMI issues are fixed in the bootcode update. You may either get a cable and do it yourself, or send it back to PBO for the update.

I beg to differ, most HDMI issues are fixed by a "firmware update", that said its clear that his issue is cable related, changing the cable gave him 1080i, I would say just use even a better cable than the replacement you got and that should fix your issue.

The "best" way to move files is probably with a USB pen drive. For lots of large files, it is possible to connect the PBO directly to a PC using the miniUSB port in the back (and NO other connections [besides power :p]), but that's probably not something you will want to do often.

Not to get into a "better cable" argument, but I'd first try changing the order the devices are turned on. It could be a version of the dreaded handshake issues we've learned to know and love.

Not at all, I just said a "better cable" not a "pricier one" ;)
Apparently patriot cheaped out on the included cables, just visit the "PBO TV incompatibly thread" on PM forums and watch the monoprice $5 cable (6ft, ferrite cores, 28 AWG) fixing more than half the complaints about incompatibility issues.

aaron,
do you know of anyway to tell if a PBO has the "+" chip in it for high def audio, other than loading medeo hardware and looking in the info section?

unfortunately there is non (beside loading ACRBO/MedeBO).
You can of course remove the heat sink and check the label on the RTL chip, but no one has done that I am not even positive what would be written on the chip.

There's no reason not to, it's just a PITA (for me with my setup) to unplug everything, move the box to a computer, plug in the power brick, then move everything back to where you started. By all means, use the port as much as you like!

Well, After buying 5 boxes for friends and family I can safely say that getting a "+" chip is a total CRAP SHOOT with no rhyme or reason. I have five boxes with serial numbers very close to each other:
1011mpb02633
1012mpb06385
1012mpb06386
1012mpb06397
1012mpb06398
1012mpb06402

The top one is one of my boxes I had handy. It DOES HAVE the plus chip. note the "1011" at the beginning.
The one ending in "85" DOES NOT.
All the other ones DO HAVE IT.
Go figure..

if you have an internal hard drive installed, you can plug the PBO with a mini USB cable and transfer movies files that way or just use an external USB storage device to play movies off of.

Just ordered one of these with the intention of hooking it to a Slingbox (my old Tvix 6500 which was doing this job finally died). Quick question for those in the know....

When viewing movies on the road the resolution can get pretty low (320 x 240 at around 300Kbps is lowest). Therefore the bigger the font when listing files and menu options the better. Does anyone know if the stock/ACRBO/MedeBO firmware has an option to increase the font size? (20 point would be good)

Just to clarify I don't need dvd cover 'walls' etc, just plain old file list is best. Options for changing the subtitle size is common but the actual file listing seems more unusual.

Thanks

Unfortunately no firmware has this feature "yet".
They do come in different fonts, so your best bet is to try each and see which one has the font you like.

On a unit with the 1073DD+ and 3rd party firmware, will it bitstream HD audio from a DLNA server (FUPPES in my case)?
I'm pretty sure my PS3 Slim can handle bitstreaming HD audio as well, but ONLY with USB attached storage.

Not even sure FUPPES itself can stream HD audio to DLNA clients.
The question is, why do you need a DLNA server instead of direct accessing the media over NFS or SMB shares ?!

Indeed it can. I just tested this with the latest SVN 0.686

My only home media streaming client up until now has been the PS3, so....no reason other than that's all I was used to working with.
On the PBO, I'm seeing stuttering with high bitrate video using DLNA, but not with Samba. It wasn't a problem for the PS3, but it looks like I'll be sticking to Samba for this new box.

I'm not sure if this is the right thread for this question but here goes:

A friend brought over his Patriot Box Office media streamer that stopped seeing his wired network completely (windows XP). It worked intermittantly over the last year. He never did any Firmware updates.

I have a wired network and Windows 7 (2 computers). My Western Digital Live Plus has been working flawlessly for over a year. When I connected his Box Office and went through network discovery, it found my network instantly and after clicking "browser" and then "workgroup", it found both my computers. Clicking on either one it brings up a login/password box. My wired network uses neither. I tried entering nothing and got "login failed". Then I tried "admin" and "123" and got the same. No way am I hacking my computers registry since it works perfectly with my Western Digital streamer.

Would a firmware upgrade fix this or is the registry hack the only fix ?

I think you've proven that your friend's PBO is working fine. IIRC you do have to bend over to get W7 to show for what is essentially a Linux box. My advice; give your friend his PBO and tell him to fix his network!

I found this information that was related to WD TV but it worked for my PBO too:

Win7 (and Vista) has some issues broadcasting its availability on a network.
You could try these changes to your Win7 box:-

Firstly, configure Sharing and Discovery:

1. Navigate to the Network and Sharing Center via the Control Panel
2. Click on the down arrow icons and select ON/OFF as follows:
Network Discovery - ON
File Sharing - ON
Public Folder Sharing - OFF
Printer Sharing - ON
Password Protected Sharing - OFF
Media Sharing - OFF

Next, configure the folder you want to share:

1. Select the folder
2. Right-click and choose 'Share' from the menu
3. From the drop-down box select the Everyone (All users in this list) account, making sure permissions are set to 'Reader'
4. Click the buttons Add, Share and Done.

Here are some further registry 'tweaks' if this doesn't work:

WARNING: This requires editing your PC's registry which, if edited incorrectly, can cause Windows systems to become unstable and unusable. So, follow the instructions below at your own risk. - we are not responsible for any damage caused by following these steps.

1. Navigate to the following location in the registry editor.
MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\
2. On the right side, double-click on 'everyoneincludesanonymous' and change the 'Value data' from '0' to '1'
3. Double-click on 'NoLmHash' and change the 'Value data' from '1' to '0'
4. Navigate to the following location in the registry editor:
MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanManServer\Param eters
5. Double-click on 'restrictnullsessaccess' and change the 'Value data' from '1' to '0'
6. Close the registry editor

Finally, restart your PC.

I think the registry tweaks are what actually got everything working. Now when PBO asks for the ID and Password I just leave them blank and it connects fine. Hope you guys have the same results:

1. Navigate to the following location in the registry editor.
MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\

2. On the right side, double-click on 'everyoneincludesanonymous' and change the 'Value data' from '0' to '1'

3. Double-click on 'NoLmHash' and change the 'Value data' from '1' to '0'

4. Navigate to the following location in the registry editor:
MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanManServer\Param eters

5. Double-click on 'restrictnullsessaccess' and change the 'Value data' from '1' to '0'

6. Close the registry editor

Sorry, but it doesn't work with Windows7.

I still need netuser id and password... :(

Quick question guys.

I just bought a PBO from someone and it came already with the latest(???) firmware.

Is there a way to delete the files(movies) from the internal HDD through the PBO's menu ?!?

With this firmware there is no "File Copy" option anymore !!!!!

Any ideas if I can use the menu to delete he files or the only way to do it is to connect the PBO to the comp and delete the file like that ?!?

Also is there a way to make the movies look more like movies(no so real) on a Samsung ln52b610 through the PBO ?!?

The TV shows the info 1920×1080 24HZ when I switch the source to HDMI.

Thanks.

My LG brand TV has a feature called "TrueMotion" that gives all video the Soap Opera effect. It's great for sports because it smooths out any jerkiness and judder, but I hate it on TV shows and movies because it makes them look like live TV rather than film. Your TV probably has Samsung's equivalent of "TrueMotion" look through the TV's menu and try to switch it off.
