Game is almost out, not too many reviews yet.

OXM score: 8.5

Pros:
Gigantic game packed with weapons, loot, and quests.
Ferociously over-the-top combat.

Cons:
Enemy spawning and co-op should be better implemented

Questionable:
Would it have been that hard to build in save-anywhere and difficulty levels?

Atomic MPC (Australia) score: 91%

Graphics: 96%
Simply stunning execution

Gameplay: 89%
Some repetition but mostly fun

Sound: 90%
Flavorsome and rich

Can't wait to play this next week. Watched a 30 minute video of some coop action and it looked like a lot of fun. Anybody here getting it for PS3 and wants to play some coop, look me up... PSN is PaulKersey.

I may get this game if reviews continue to be favorable, but I already have Uncharted, Ratchet, and COD pre-ordered, so I dunno.

Lol, I didn't initially intend to watch the whole thing, but it looked like so much fun so I kept watching :\.

I watched most of that too. . .seemed like the Xbox version though. I definitely would like to see PS3 footage since that is the version I have pre-ordered.

I do hope there is more than 3 monster types (crab worm, scrag and bat). Kind of surprised they didn't throw their procedural generator on the monsters as it seems like an obvious way to go.

Cheers

Yeah... only seen one gameplay video of the PS3 version so far, but it looked the same to me.

And there are definitely more enemy types than that. I think I have heard there are 150 or something like that.

I have the 360 version pre-ordered and asked the same thing in the 360 thread. I like a lot of the aspects of this game (co-op FPS, RPG, looting). But from the video, it looks like:

1.) There's not many enemy varieties.

2.) The landscape stays pretty much the same the whole game.

3.) There doesn't appear to be any story at all (you just keep collecting audio logs as missions?).

I could be wrong about all of those (and I'm hoping I am). But if the above is true then I may cancel my pre-order because I think it would get old fast. Leveling and upgrading characters for me is a lot of fun (loved Oblivion and Fallout 3), but unless there's some variety or a story to go along with it, It would get old real quick.

On the fence as well about this game. It's either this or Dragon Age:Origins. Think I'm gonna wait on the player reviews before I choose. Anybody know if TRU is gonna carry this?

How does the split-screen option fare? So far I have yet to see a reviewer to comment on it and as the hope was to play this game with the wife, it is pretty important that this feature is functional.

Split screen kinda sucks in that the inventory screens do not fit well on your screens. You have to move it around to see certain parts and since you use it fairly often (due to all the loot you have to compare) it is annoying. During actual gameplay it is fine though. I kinda want to get a second copy so the gf and I can play on dif TVs but to many new games coming to spend double on one.

PS3 version is having major online issues to the point of unplayability. Gamelist taking 30-40min to show up, PSN friends not showing up but old PSN friends (ones that you deleted) showing up. Gearbox is looking into the issue. Hopefully a patch will come soon for those that picked it up.

This game has incredible depth and tons of replay value. Honestly I can't wait to buy it for myself. The co-op is scaled based on how many players you have (2-4) and there are literally hundreds of thousands of weapons and tons of loot.

Does anyone have this yet? Have they played it? All the reviews have been more than favorable and seeing someone play it just made my itch to get this game all the more needing of scratch.

This game described above as DIablo in fps wasteland is pretty right on. The addictiveness just builds and buids and builds. I can't wait to play it more and more.

Anybody know if the PS3 online problems have been corrected yet?

Martez
10-25-09, 12:52 PM
According to Gearbox it was fixed on the 21st.

We are very pleased to report that using PSN friends lists with the game should now work properly for all PS3 customers. The fix has been released invisibly and should work automatically for all PSN users on the PS3 platform. No special action is required by PS3 customers to apply the fix - just play the game and you'll find that everything works fine now. We thank you all for your patience and for making us aware of the issue!

Hrm, I'm still on the fence about this one. I really like loot-grinders like Diablo and Sacred, but something about RPG and FPS doesn't sit well with me. The most important aspect of these games is the character development.. why give you a view where you can't see your character? One of the reasons I never did finish Fallout.

Couple of loot question does it have like rares and uniques? Sacred was sort of a let down in that regard especially lack of "color" defining the drops. Also is there new skill and character building like say adding pts to str after a level and gaining a new skill?

Weapons are color-coded based on rarity: White-Green-Blue-Purple-Orange. The text is color-coded. Also, you only gain skills; there are no in-depth stats.

deathindustrial
10-27-09, 12:07 PM
I thought weapons were colour coded based on manufacturer and feature? Orange for fire, blue for shock, etc.?

Edit: Sorry, I thought you meant the gun itself not the menu text:

http://borderlands.wikia.com/wiki/Weapons#Rarity

Borderlands uses a classification system for gear that is similar to Blizzard Entertainment's color-coding system. A common (white) gun would be average, money will glow (yellow) when dropped or found, an uncommon (green) would be slightly above average, a rare (blue) would be a premium gun, an epic (purple) would be a very strong gun, and legendary (orange) guns are the best of the best. The rarity of each gun is indicated by color as stated on the page of each gun. (See Category:Weapons)

White < Green < Blue < Purple < Yellow < Orange < Dark Orange < Pearlescent

Even with having to scroll menus around, this game has the best split screen implementation of any game I have played I think. Unlike most split screen offerings, the two instances are basically complete: no tether, full menu access, fully independent instances.

Totally glad I picked this one up to play with the wife (we're both level 16 now). Super fun.

Cheers

Can anyone tell me if i was dieing repeatedly with the Berserker because I suck, or because he sucks? Which character is easiest to play with? Thanks!

Sunkist
10-28-09, 10:37 AM
I would not say any character is easier than another, you could go the whole game and not use any of their "skills" and do fine (but they are helpful). Just make sure you are at the proper level (or higher) when you start a mission and you should be alright, plus play with friends! Having them help out and heal you if you go down works great!

You could be the siren and then turn invisible to run away kinda if you get swamped, that is what my gf does if she gets cornered.

Paying attention to weapons is important. I find often that a newer found gun with a 200 attack, is stronger than a 300 attack gun from early on... not usre why. No multipliers, adn no acid/fire....

Rented the game this past weekend but didn't really get into it until last night/early this morning. (Gotta take a nap for lunch!) The graphics are really nicely done in that cell animation/3D FPS way. It's the old west/firefly meets Marathon combined with a bit of Bioshock RPG elements. During the solo mission when I first started out, it was a bit "quiet" with not much going on except to go here, pick up this, meet this person, etc. But then when you level up and then gain money and shoot more enemies, gain more xp, upgrades, get better guns.. it becomes a blast!

But for some reason, at times the audio takes a hit and what i mean by that is the sound/music starts to hiccup... anyone else experienced this? (Running this on my PS3 160G/Audio output: digital optical/HDMI: to Samsung LNB650 LCD.)

It's a known issue. They say the "workaround" is not to use digital audio.

This game rules, the co-op is really fun and it satisfies that scavenger itch that Fallout just isn't quite scratching anymore (it helps that the game doesn't crash repeatedly :p). Anyone who wants to do some co-op, add me up or send me a message. I'm a level 30 Siren at the moment, but I'm planning on building characters in each class.

There is a lot to take in at first, I think the game does a decent job of holding your hand through the first few levels and introducing you to things slowly; it's also laid out well enough that the beginning areas are really easy to rush through when you start a second playthrough on a higher level.

Issue: Digital audio skips or stutters
Status: A fix for this issue has been verified and is pending deployment
Verified Workaround: Do not use digital audio output. This is not a permanent solution, but should clear up audio issues in the interim. Make sure your PS3 is updated by performing a system update check!

The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned is the first installment of downloadable content for Borderlands. Dr. Ned had been in charge of keeping the workers of Jakobs Cove alive, but ended up transforming them into abominations. The player will assist Dr. Ned in trying to cure the victims of his work.[12] The installment will be released for the 360 and PS3 versions on November 24, 2009.[13]

I don't really have any problems as far as loot goes, and I haven't run into any real jackasses in this game at all. Loot is first come, first served, but if the person has a mic I'll ask them if they need anything whenever we're in New Haven or a similar resting spot and swap.

I traded a 1200-damage rocket launcher for a 900-damage sniper rifle last night. I've been meeting some really decent people online, particularly the level-50's.

Also a note: while you stop levelling at 50, you still continue to get skill points-- the skill trees CAN be completely maxed out. Also, your wallet will keep counting $$$ past the visual limit.

Can't wait for the DLC, just wondering why they didn't realize this spooky zombie stuff around Halloween.

Anybody who wants to add me feel free, I've got a level 50 Siren that will rock any duel and I'll be starting new characters in the other classes tonight to get my Platinum and choosing which one to start leveling from there. Probably Hunter because sniping is fun.

I picked up the DLC last night and played for about an hour. I recently just started my 2nd playthrough and am at level 37. I found the zombies were around levels 42-43 and the weapons I had hardly made a dent in them so I spent most of the time just running and exploring. Overall I'd say the DLC is worth getting as the environments are a nice departure from the other standard Borderlands areas. I just need to get my hands on some decent weapons...

Unfortunately, he didn't like it enough to buy it himself, so I need to find somebody to join me online.

This is a common glitch (there are several trophies/achievements that this happens to). You need to start a new character and do the required steps again and hopefully the second time around it will unlock.

I must say, hour per dollar/ pound for pound this is likely the best game I have. I have quite a few hours on this game and still find myself looking forward to playing it.

Hardest part is deciding which guns to sell. Pele demands a sacrifice!

I have to agree with you on that. I still haven't finished AC2 because of this game. Got through Uncharted 2 but I finished that before I got Boarderlands. I'm hooked also. I love my PELE Sniper, one of the best weapons in the game.

Just got my soldier up to level 50 tonight. But I'm jealous - half the people that pop into my games have awesome weapons. Awesome as in they kill enemies almost instantly(smg's, rifles, shotguns, not snipers), whereas even at level 50, it takes me forever to kill things. Guess I just don't have the right loot yet.

t-ray,

Farm for weapons in hard areas, such as Old Haven...Crimson Fastness. If you don't get good weapons exit without saving and try again. New haven can also be good as it has 6 weapons cases in a safe area.

HAve you checked out this site?

Just got this game and damn is it getting addicting. Im only level 12 Hunter but I want to keep LOOTING! Sniper rifles are awesome.

Is there an actual storyline to this game or are you just a never ending loot-whore?

I've been playing with my son & we're at level 32 or so with a Hunter/Berserker combo. There's a vague storyline about the vault and lots of missions are interrelated - find someone who was killed & then get a mission to avenge them or kill a guy and then go make amends by killing a lot more people. We're not at the end yet though so I don't know if everything gets tied up with a pretty bow or not, but there are some constants throughout the game where you get a vague ongoing story feel...

It is a blast & I do love the Sniper Rifles. Wait until you start getting the guns with heavy environmental effects - nothing better than sniping a guy from way out & he bursts into flames or gets electrocuted & his brain pops out of his body...

Level 31 Hunter now :D

I recently found my favorite gun. This thing tears through those Lance Soldiers with ease. And it replenishes my ammo faster than I can use it:

I presume it's some form of "Pestilient Defiler" (I can't see the pic at work) - those are awesome revolvers. Although I've yet to find one with auto ammo replenish. Consider yourself lucky...

We're up to L50 w/Mordecai & Brick on our 2nd playthrough. Just need the co-op Trophy for platinum now. Still great fun to find new exotic weapons to play with and the add-on content is a lot of fun too...
