View Full Version : VERY quick look at the RS35...

Seeing that I did a relatively indepth review of the RS15/25 a bit ago, and that the RS35 isn't all that different, I decided to keep this simple and straightforward. I had my first RS35 (of many) arrive today. So I bugged out early from the office and took it to my test room to get to work. Basically it is physically identical to the RS25 (except the model number).

I ran the usual initial calibration and then applied my tweaks. Here are the before and after reports:

AFTER CALIBRATION:

As you can see, they tested out similarly to the RS25. From 30-100IRE I got less than a 1 dE on the grayscale and on the colors I got less than dE .5. NOTE: My meter, like most, is not really accurate from 0-10, and even 20 can be touchy so the readings at those points are not that accurate.

I then ran some quick measurements. As most know, the RS35 is rated at 900 lumens like its little brother the RS25. From testing, at high lamp, short throw, iris open I acheived 867 lumens...right on track for the max output (remember too, that is a calibrated rating unlike many of the competitors).

Now the contrast is the big difference...70000:1 vs. 50000:1 for the RS35 vs. RS25. Because the white level is the same, obviously that means a drop in black level for the RS35.

OPEN IRIS, LONG THROW: 41222:1
CLOSED IRIS, LONG THROW: 66840:1

As you can see, both numbers are extremely impressive. Remember that is to date the highest native contrast I have measured in a digital projector. In addition, that is the highest on/off contrast using any sort of iris to date as well. Kudos to JVC for that accomplishment.

Now there has been some discussion on the convergence of these units. And while NO 3 chip projector of any design will likely have perfect convergence, this particular unit was extremely good...amongst the best I have seen from JVC. Simple fact is we don't know if the hand picked parts contribute to this or not, and we probably won't until many more samples have been tested, but for now it looks promising.

These pictures were taken very close up with a relatively high end camera and lens, so though the camera may be introducing some affects, overall you can see just how good it is. Beyond about 3' back one wouldn't even be able to see this.

So as I said I kept this brief...but all in all for those who want the best and don't mind paying a slight premium for it, the JVC DLA-RS35 might just be the ticket.

Thanks for reading!
