View Full Version : DTS-HD, my doubts have been squashed

So I finally bit the bullet (due to a really good deal) and upgraded from my old JVC RX-6010V receiver and got an Onkyo 806. I really thought my old receiver sounded quite good and thought that I was maybe being a little frivolous in buying something that wasn't totally needed.

Holy crap was I wrong.

I threw in Die Hard 3 after setting my receiver up to the best of my ability. I made sure that, on my ps3, it was definitely receiving the DTS-HD signal. When the Twentieth Century Fox intro came on, I seriously laughed out loud in delight. I didn't realize what a difference the receiver/DTS-HD could make. Needless to say, I was absolutely floored. Despite some of the negative feedback some have had regarding this receiver, it sounds absolutely amazing to me and now I have to (get to) go back and re-watch all of my blu-rays as I think it will make a world of difference.

So for those of you who think lossless audio/a good receiver won't make much difference, trust me, it does. Even my wife who is mostly meh about my home theater stuff, was sitting there quietly with the corners of her lips raised slightly as she was watching the movie. That said it all.

Well then I guess the audio world can stop doing tests and comparrisons. Your wife says there is a huge difference between lossless and lossy. What else needs to be said. :D

Even my wife...Classic.

Rather than the compression codec, upgrading from a 7 year old receiver and using Audyssey (room correction) and applying THX Loudness Plus (loudness compensation) are most likely the reasons you're hearing such a difference.

Lol. Nah, her response only meant that I wasn't up sh!t creek without a paddle for surprising her with my purchase. Always better to seek forgiveness than permission imho.

The fact that YOU hear a difference is all that matters, regardless of what all the "tests and comparisons" conducted by "experts" tell you what THEY think you should hear. FWIW, I agree 100% with you. Enjoy your new system. :D

Great! You and your wife enjoy the movies, all over again, and don't worry about the sarcastic BS you can depend upon AVS forum to deliver.

Even my wife who is mostly meh about my home theater stuff....Now if you were on a dedicated 2ch audio forum, for us to believe this, your wife, who wouldn't give a snot about the gear, would have been doing the dishes in the kitchen with DOOL blaring on the teev, when she rushed in and exclaimed "my goodness, have you done something to the system? It sounds so much more defined in the mids and the soundstage is at once, both airier and more solid than before with image placement that is, so, to die for."

Seriously, enjoy. I'll be getting a new HD compatible Marantz soon.

That's EXACTLY what my wife did! And then we made love.

I'm patiently waiting to get that reaction from my girlfriend too. We just moved in together and she had a little LG 2.1 system because her living room was tiny and the walls were thin and now that we've got more room I'm piecing together a system. I've just got to hold out until Christmas to get everything and set it all up. She already doesn't like how big my power center (Monster HTPS7000) and blu ray player (Pioneer BDP51FD) are...she's gonna throw a fit when I unbox a receiver too. It's gonna be worth the flack early to see the reaction when the first movie plays in truehd or master audio.

Well, despite the friendly jabs regarding the response from the wife, there is something to be said when someone who knows nothing about acoustics and doesn't normally pay attention to such things actually notices a difference when said movie is played again with a new receiver and lossless sound.

As someone else has said, the most important part is that I notice the difference. I really wasn't sure if I was going to and I was expecting to be somewhat disappointed. Using descriptors that are in no way professional I can say that the new sound is more enveloping, clear and "full" and, so, I'm very, very satisfied with the results. The bass seems to be more present as well, although I'm not sure if that is a calibration difference or not.

I'm still not sold on 7.1 yet, or the "height" addition (9.1) to dolby. But who knows, I may be one day surprised by that as well.

Did she know the change happened, or did she react without knowing ahead of time?

I'm in the "Well, it's not definitive if it isn't double blind tested, but it's your system so it's your call on whether it sounds better to you" camp. Glad you enjoy it. :)

judging by the writing style of the tec savy (sic) person, it wouldn't surprise me if there was a bit of a communication problem... ;)
