View Full Version : Question about backing up PS3...
House72 10-16-09, 09:30 PM I'm in the mist of backing up a PS3, and it won't allow me to fully back up the System Info.. I have a Western 250gb Passport as an external Hd, and the PS3 is only a 80gb.. The backup gets to about 46% and then it says cant finish, does anyone have any insight why it won't finish??
Thanks in advance..

Is the HD formatted FAT32? And I bet if you searched theres probably hundreds of posts about backing up your PS3 so it doesnt really need its own thread
House72 10-16-09, 09:45 PM Yes, it's Fat 32, the PS3 recognizes it, but won't finish backing up.. I'm just wondering why..
As for the Own thread, Jeesh, I thought this was a forum to ask to ask questions on.. I didn't see a 100 threads on backing up a PS3...
That's alright House, Phipp is an AVS "Special Member" :-) omnomnom
As for your question, do you have any other data on your external drive or is it empty?
How much data do you have on your PS3?
It's alright if there's stuff on your external and the PS3 backup does check to make sure that there is enough space to back up to before it begins. Backups tend to work a lot more smoothly and faster if there isn't a ton of data to back up. The first thing I would try is deleting some of the larger game data files from the PS3. They would need to be downloaded again later, but it might be all that's needed to get your backup to finish.
The external drive just might have an issue that prevents it from finishing the backup, but I don't think that's likely. So first try delete one or two games data files (not game save files) and see how that goes. If the percentage complete goes up, you'll know you might need to delete more stuff from your PS3.

Actually just a quick search on this forum for "backing up a ps3" returns 101 threads. I guess its just easier for lazy people to start new threads than actually try to find an answer to their problem

Rather than getting hypertensive and being condescending about it, why don't you step outside of that glass house of yours?
Sure, a search turns up 101 threads in which the phrase "backing up a ps3" was used at least one time in any possible context. However, a simple review of the 100 (as this thread is included in your count) previously posted threads that contained that term in any give context reveals that a significant portion of those threads have nothing to do with the topic of backing up a ps3. Of those that actually do address the topic of backing up a ps3, it seems that a whopping zero address the OP's issue. Now then, it would make you look like far less of a hypocrite in your efforts to denigrate people if you more thoroughly vetted the validity of your argument before posting. Or is it just easier for lazy people to try to post evidence of a claim without actually assuring that the evidence actually supports their claim?

AS of yet, no luck backing up the PS3..
SirDrexl 10-19-09, 08:58 PM Did you format a large enough partition? Windows' built in formatter only allows you to format up to 32GB. It may be hitting that limit, although somebody said it checks first.
If you haven't done so already, I would try reformatting the drive on a PC with a FAT32 formatter that allows for large sizes. I use this one: http://tokiwa.qee.jp/EN/Fat32Formatter/index.html. You don't have to format the whole drive, just a large enough partition.
