View Full Version : WD TV Live Airport Extreme Issues
majunga 10-17-09, 02:59 AM Just picked up the new (improved?) WD TV Live, been using the WD TV for about a year now. Trying to connect a usb hard drive to the Apple Airport Extreme to stream to the WD Live. Shared the hard drive, WD Live never sees it. Other PCs on network can see it. Is this a Bonjour issue?
Has anyone got the WD Live to work with the Airport Extreme? Any guidance is greatly appreciated (I am new to the world Airport Extreme).
anjerarts 10-17-09, 06:32 AM Same problem here :(
In Airport utility Filesharing is turned on, guest access is read/write. I don't know what more i should do....
I have an Airport Extreme and WDTV Live and haven't had any issues streaming from my NAS over it.
However, I haven't tested trying to access something from the USB port of the Airport Extreme itself.
I have read that drives attached to it have to use the FAT32 file system and not NTFS. And the feedback around using it in general has not been positive - it's slow and unreliable.
anjerarts 10-17-09, 11:03 AM I found out how to access the extenal drive from my airport via WD TV Live. But after i turn off the WD live I have to do all steps over again... :(:(
How i got it working:
1. Go to Airport utility and enable sharing and share disks over WAN.
2. On your Mac go to: system preferences > sharing > file sharing > options. Turn on 'Share files and folders using SMB'.
3. Now I can see my Mac dropbox on my WD TV. But still no external Airport disk.
4. Turn on my Win XP notebook and connect Apple airport utility for windows.
5. Suddenly both my XP notebook and my Airport show up in WD TV Live. I can join as guest and watch all the movies I want.
After step 5 I can even turn off my XP notebook and iMac. The Airport drive stays in the WD TV live menu. However. When I turn off my WD TV Live and turn it back on, it finds no shared disks anymore. Got to do all 5 steps again.
So there's a way to make it work. But like this it's easier to just plug the esb disk in the WD TV Live...
Hopefully someone else knows a better fix :)

A Time Capsule is just an Airport Extreme with a hard drive in it. I found it easier to just to plug the drive in directly to the WDTV Live, it mounts the drive and it shows up on my iMac and I can dump files to it. The USB drive is formatted HFS+.

majunga 10-18-09, 10:27 PM I was hoping to connect my drive(s) to the USB port on the Airport Extreme and stream to 2 different WD TV Live's. I dont think that is possible......even after reviewing the video posted on wdtvlive.com, they show connecting a My Book World Edition (NAS) drive.
Basically I think you have to have a device (router or NAS) that is UPnP or DLNA compatible.

Did you enable sharing on the WDTV? Its an option to share wdtv on the network.
If the WDTV live (ethernet cable wired to airport extreme) can stream from my airport disk (Lacie 1TB USB connected to airport extreme) it would be awesome.

Thanks

Thanks,
canuck88 01-22-10, 09:15 AM I have a My Book Essential edition 1.5tb drive hooked up to my Airport Extreme (newest model), and then the WD TV Live wired to the Airport Extreme. For the first week I had no problem streaming content to the WD TV Live. In the last 2 days, the WD TV Live seems to drop the connection at weird times (ie. 40 minutes into an episode of Dexter)...
So it can work, but there are kinks - and I'm not sure what those kinks are yet...

Any luck with this one yet? I have been struggling the same problem for a while now. Seems that WD TV Live can access Apple Time Capsule only if my Apple iMac is turned on and I have entered Apple's Time Machine software (listed under devices in Finder).
Any help with this issue is highly appreciated!

Any help with this issue is highly appreciated!I believe the Time Capsule goes to sleep after a certain period of time and I haven't found a way to adjust the timing… and it appears the WD Live doesn't wake it up unlike most other activities.

Yes, I have the same feeling about this issue. If I have my computer turned on and Time Capsule (or an external USB hard drive attached to it) mounted, then and only then, WD TV Live can locate my Time Capsule (or the USB hard drive) under Network Shares. Otherwise, Time Capsule stays in "sleep mode" and WD TV Live cannot access it.
It would be really nice if WD TV Live could access those backup files on Time Capsule without having to turn on my computer & mounting Time Capsule.
