View Full Version : When do you get excited about your build?
billison 10-17-09, 05:49 PM Just like the title says. When do you or did you start to get really excited about your build?
Today I raised a Gas pipe the 8'' I needed so It would not need a sofit..and it hit me that it was the last mojor thing to do befor I could drywall the ceiling....
So I ask you guys, what was that for you?

For me it was the whole process. Mine was a mostly DIY so everything from concept to construction to finally functional were great moments. I am a constant tweaker and up-grader so it is never really “done” but the journey sure has been fun.
gitSehT 10-17-09, 08:58 PM Everytime I find that I have created a new "something", like the other day I had finished the framing for the doorway to the theater and I walked through it for the first time into what seemed like what was now a room and before was just bits of framing. Most of the time it is the completion of a task that allows me to move to the next stage, that is the best feeling.
For me, it was when I finished painting the ceiling and walls. Once I reached that point, I was in a zone, and it was all excitment from that point forward. Everything just fell into place!

I think i'm like that. When I put up the first wall it felt like that... agian with the drywall and lights..
down site though.... I just found a leak....sucks. but I think it's fixed now. Just checked it all. gonna check again in a bit...
vespaguy 10-18-09, 06:47 PM I gotta admit that I was pretty excited from initial planning straight through to completion. But there's definately a high at every little milestone - rough framing, drywall, paint, etc.
If I had to pick one point that I was the most excited it would be after my carpet was installed. The room changed from a "room" to a theater without seats. At that point I was counting the days until I could watch my first movie.

Or when one of the neighborhood guys comes down to help me with something and they say "hey man, this is really coming along".
finishingtouchcu 10-18-09, 10:57 PM I've been done for 3 years, and I still get excited to watch a movie, tv video games with my kids.... If the thrill stays, you did it right.

tlogan6797 10-19-09, 08:54 AM I'd say each major milestone for me as well. For me, that's been each rough-in inspection that passed. And now that drywall is up and about to be primed (and it REALLY looks like a room now!), I'm REALLY looking forward to starting the stage, so I can get the dricore back down, then the screen wall, then the...., then the....
But I DO think that I'm down to the more finish-in-a-weekend-or-two stage versus the months to do the projects up to this point. I think that's what's really held me up. I'd get started on a new phase and then it just seemed to drag on and on so I'd loose whatever motivation I had.
Javatime 10-19-09, 09:25 AM I did everything myself so every little thing I did was exciting. But I'd say after looking at bare, hard concrete floors for over 2 1/2 years that carpet really finished it off and gave it the "wow" factor of a finished room. Definitely a major event for me.
I've been working on my basement for just over a year now. The initial start up was very exciting to me until I found out how much work it really was. This was my first remodel ever. The excitement reached a peak after every major step though: framing, wiring, soffits, conduit, insulation, drywall, primer, paint, and then finally carpeting. Like others have said, every time a step is completed that allows you to go to the next step I got really excited.
I can sit down there for a long time admiring what we've done to that point.
But, by far the most exciting thing had to be after the carpeting went in. It turned into a real room we could actually start using. We still have a lot of work to do yet and with the holidays around the corner it will be put on hold again until the New Year. It's almost done though; at least the family/theater room. After that we have a small office to finish and the bathroom. I wanted my home theater first though so that took precedence. I do have a bar area to finish yet as well in that room, that should be fun as well.
I would get excited when I completed a phase, but the biggest thrill was after drywall went in. I had been looking at framing, electrical, and A/V wiring for so long that I was truly Stoked after my drywall had been put in. That gave me the much needed push/motivation I needed to get the kids area finished. Now I have a smile every time I watch a movie or HDTV down there. This gives me the motivation I need to start up again on the true HT. As good as the kids area is the theater will be much better.

I got excited after each milestone like the others have said but the best was the start and finish of drywall. I did everything up to drywall and everything after so drywall was the turning point from rough in to finish for me.
Meeting milestones are great opportunities for excitement... but after 2 grueling years, the best part was the last step when I got the projector properly converged.
Now the excitement comes whenever someone visits that hasn't seen it before.
For me it was when i first put my screen up and was able to see Blue Ray for the first time after 3 months of waiting to see it all to gather,

I've been at my 2 yr build now for 29 months, I expect to "finish" by the end of month 30... :-)
I had many "get excited" milestones as follows:
1) bathroom is finished and functional
2) all rooms are framed
3) Drywall is up
4) Screen is up and I'm watching a Blu-Ray
5) and the BIG ONE >> In about 3 weeks when carpet is in....
Mr_Mike_P 10-24-09, 08:44 AM my excitment started when i signed the Purchase Agreement for the house :)
been dreaming for 2 years while i waited through two springs to monitor for leaks (new house)
