I am planning a theater build and I don't know if I should spend the money on cool looking ceiling such as having star lights, etc....
Are these hard to do and cost much?
Let's see your cool theater ceiling.

Not mine, but Makeit57 hasn't been on AVS in over a year, and his ceiling is not to be missed.
Entire ceiling shots.

greighn,
very nice and sci fi looking.
Vancomycin,
Star ceiling's can be relatively cheap in the grand scheme of things and if at all handy easy to accomplish. I'll post a pic of mine in a little while.

I have a regular ceiling and then installed what I call starlight skylight. This shows the final product, check out the thread if you wanna see details on the build.

Any possibilty of getting some more ideas here!
I'm up to making my star ceiling and have 7' flat ceilings. Cutting and raising the ceiling is out of the question! How can i make it look like it's meant to be there!
I like yours oman321 but it might be a bit 'bulky' or low for my ceiling.

Look into sky murals. The guy comes to your house and paints the ceiling with glow in the dark paint. Im thinking about having it done this summer. Cost is about $1,200 depending on the size.

I'd love to do a star ceiling with the fiber optic kit. The pics above seem to be the ticket for me. Use some moulding to build a frame and then use the old T-bar drop ceiling tiles in black.

I love having a decorated ceiling, really adds to the feeling of the room. The Jedi Theater has a Death Star scene painted on the ceiling. There's also a Millennium Falcon in the back corner flying into the scene, you can see it on my website.

A star ceiling is a great idea for a home theater, especially because they are already built to be dark areas... just like a real night sky location. And, there are a few ways to go... and we won't talk about plastic stars. :-)
Fiber Optics are great if you don't care that it doesn't look extremely realistic... and you will have a lot of light on in the room. They are great if you want to see the stars while the movie is playing too.
The painted ceilings (which I do for a living) are not meant to be seen in a room with a lot of light in it. But, nothing is a realistic as a painted night sky mural when the room is dark and the paint has been charged up.
That's the disadvantage of a painted ceiling... they need to be charged up (with fluorescent light... but it's easy to do) and they need a really dark room.
The upside is that they are extremely realistic, you can add in the Milky Way, a moon and other fun night sky objects... and it is invisible in the light. And, with a special additive to the paint... you can still see the night sky in the light (and when the movie is playing) as long as you have some black lights on.
Both are great options... it just matters what you want out of it.
BTW... If you look closely you can see a slight Milky Way going from the right side middle, going up to the left top. Without the black lights on... the Milky Way is much more prominent.
By far the coolest ceiling on AVS - Dennis' masterpiece (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1183463):
