View Full Version : How do you get your games?
stepyourgameup 10-19-09, 10:42 AM I am curious to see how other gamers get their games. I only actually buy 2-3 games per year. Usually games that I will get ALOT of replay out of or social games like Guitar Hero/Rock Band. For me, Gamefly is a real money saver.
FrankJ.Cone 10-19-09, 10:51 AM I have used Gamefly and it was great for a while. Then I stopped getting the new releases on release day and cancelled.

I can see how that would deter someone but for me it's not a big deal if I get it on release day or not. The main problem I have with Gamefly is how long it takes for me to get a game. I like in south central Kansas so it takes a few days for me to get a game from them. Netflix on the other hand has very fash shipping times to my house.
phipp01 10-19-09, 11:07 AM I usually just buy them. Either release day or Ebay if its a few months after its released and I am interested in it. Hopefully COD MW2 will give me plenty of play time through MP like COD4 and W@W have given me. Never tried GF because I have heard from multiple people that it takes awhile to get a game you want. Not worth the aggravation to me and BB charges too much
rjsanc30 10-19-09, 11:15 AM Being older now (and somewhat wiser) I tend to take less chances and only purchase titles that I research and know I'll enjoy - top-tier titles/MP titles such as COD4, Uncharted, Metal Gear, KZ2, Infamous...etc... as well as some sports games are what I generally play now.
Kinda wish I had more time to "rent"; sure there are many great games I've missed over the years...then again it's not like I have any extra time to play them anyway.
Cysquatch 10-19-09, 11:15 AM I rent from Gamefly and if the game is worthy (Demon's Souls for example), I pay the keep it price. Paid 38 bucks (had two $5 reward codes). And its brand new since I was the first renter. I've done that with at least 10 games. Only the AAA titles that I must have day 1 (Uncharted 2, Killzone 2, inFamous) is when I pay retail.
TyrantII 10-19-09, 11:20 AM You missed a few options, specifically Goozex.
I just bought Uncharted and Brutal legend because of the TRU B2G1 free deal. Traded my free game (another copy of BL) with a forum member for Demons Souls.
Before that, the last game I bought was Deadspace last Nov.
I have a pretty deep Goozex queue and have received ~10 newish games and completed them fully since then. It's really been a god send to the wallet. 10 games is $600 of gaming!

I said i.e. Gamefly so Goozex would fall into that catagory somewhat.
Krieger119 10-19-09, 11:48 AM I buy all my games and ebay those with no replay value.

Same thing, I buy the games I know I'll like. Haven't rented a game yet for PS3. I don't even have enough time to play all the games I bought yet, don't add rented games to that :p

Kinda, Goozex is a game trading site, while Gamefly is a rental service / buy at Gamestop used prices.
Personally I think Goozex is the best deal, as it allows you to play the most games possible, with almost no hit on your wallet as long as you're willing to trade games away. And if you want to keep something for your library, there's no stopping you there.
KingShorty 10-19-09, 01:10 PM I use both Gamefly and Goozex.
ppshooky 10-19-09, 01:16 PM I buy games.
Though, the last disc-based game I purchased was inFamous. A friend is going to let me borrow Batman someday.
IeraseU 10-19-09, 01:28 PM I usually buy, and then resell on ebay when I'm done. I buy less then 10 games a year on average, however.
adams828 10-19-09, 01:40 PM You forgot:
My mom works for Sony, and she brought home a copy of "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX". I quickly slipped it into my trusty PS3, and started playing.
maximuslcd 10-19-09, 02:05 PM I only buy games, but I dont get as much game time as I need so I only get 1-2 games per year usually. The last new game I bought was MSPR..so thats been a while.
I did just pick up demon souls from a friend for $30...dont plan on getting another game until CODMC2 comes out.....ohhhh I am gonna get uncharted 2 this week for my sons b-day
confidenceman 10-19-09, 02:09 PM I used to rent through Gamefly, but discovered that I was only getting one or two games a month. I realized that I would lose roughly as much money buying a game and then selling it (~$10-20) as it cost me to pay for Gamefly each month. Add the facts that I didn't always get the game I wanted when I wanted it from them as well as the slow turn-around time, and it just didn't make sense to use them anymore.
Bazylik 10-19-09, 02:26 PM I buy if I find a deal on games that I want some what, I def. buy the games that I want, for the rest, goozex it is. Great service, I even get sealed games sometimes, last was Ghostbusters, someone sent a sealed game. How cool is that?

Similar situation. I don't have much time to play, so I'm very selective, do a lot of research, and only buy games I know I'll play through (SP) 2-3 times at least. There are many I would've liked to have tried out, but my growing library of new and older games I hope to get back to gives me plenty. Games also make great holiday and b-day gifts, and they're the only thing I ask for now! :D
jkoch6599 10-19-09, 03:41 PM I buy games I really want to play right around when they're released. I get games that I'm unsure of or don't mind waiting on from Goozex.
A long time ago, I rented a N64 game. I put it in and nothing. Pulled it out and looked at the connector and it was covered with sh?t. Looked like someone had spilled a soda and it got onto the game. Fried my N64. Since then, I rent nothing. I buy all my games and movies.
Bigfame 10-19-09, 04:22 PM Gamefly all the way. I live about 35 miles from a distribution center and always get new games the day of release. I recieved HALO:ODST and Uncharted 2 the day they came out in stores. I love GF. I can also buy the game at a used price if I want to (will be buying Ratchet & Clank this way)

I will go ahead and cancel my GF membership for a month or two if there won't be any good games coming out. Around holiday time there are lots of good games I want to play so GF works great. I might have to give Goozex a try though.
stepyourgameup 10-19-09, 04:48 PM Remember the old days when you could actually rent a game console at your local video store? It was like $10 for 2 nights. I also used to have the Sega channel, anyone have that as well? I played the $h!+ out of Jeopardy!
SirDrexl 10-19-09, 07:32 PM I buy everything, usually online from Amazon or eBay. I don't really like to rent games, because it's not like you can finish them in a couple of days now. I feel they're worth it, given how much time you spend on them.
I also find that it can take a lot of time to fully evaluate a game anyway. The initial learning curve and frustration on Mirror's Edge was so much that if I had rented it, I probably would have just decided I didn't like it and moved on. Because I had bought it, I had some more time to adjust to it, and I eventually enjoyed it. It was $20, so it wasn't like I was trying to justify a $60 purchase either.
A little OCD thing I wouldn't like is having a forced trophy entry for a game I'll likely never play again. I wish they'd let us remove these, or do they and I just don't know how?
Also with trophies, if they're difficult and/or time-consuming enough, I may not want to finish what I can reasonably get, but instead come back to it from time to time. For instance, in GTAIV after plowing through the single-player story (for the second time, since there were no trophies when it was released), I got tired of the game. I'll go back to it later and try to get some multiplayer stuff. I don't know how many times I'm going back to Rock Band 2 trying to get what I can. I'd rather have the game around so it's there when I'm ready.
I have, however, switched to mostly renting movies, because I've finally realized that I usually just watch the movie once and that's it.
I buy the games I play, although I only play one or 2 a year at most.
But owning the disc makes me feel a little less unlawful when I get/replay the game 10 years later emulated on my laptop or phone or such.

I wonder why most other people haven't figured that out yet.
CubicleDrone 10-20-09, 11:32 AM I only buy games when the price drops. Since I refuse to pay $50+ for a game, I have to be patient. Which isn't really a problem because I have plenty of other games to occupy me until a game I'm interested in reduces in price. I usually behind the curve, but that means I can find any number of deals on pre-owned or sales in stores.
charmedreally 10-20-09, 01:15 PM I also use Gamefly 2 at a time. Best deal out there for console gamers. For the price of 3-4 new games I rent for a year and probably go through 30+ games for my 360, wii & psp. I spend less than I used to on games but I think I actually play more. When I do buy the used prices are cheapest around. Just got RE5 for $20 and free shipping :D
I'm actually working on my own top secret version of goozex which is completely free, just trying to work out how to minimize the possibility for evil people ripping good people off. I've been working on it for quite some time and I think it will be a better alternative if/when enough people start using it.
But to answer the OP, I just buy them, usually used from Gamestop.
Also, I see that your occupation is programmer, so I'm betting you are thinking the same thing I am, lol
I buy and use goozex.
BTW I conscider goozex more in line w/ buying games than renting. I wouldn't group it w/ gamefly either.
