View Full Version : ASUS O!Play - improved UI and uPnP firmware - anyone try it yet?
Everdog 10-19-09, 01:59 PM Just curious to see if anyone here has had any luck with the new firmware. On one hard its nice to see they are quickly adding new features and making improvements, but on the other hand I heard some people bricked their players.
Anyone else tried it?
What are the improvements that you saw?

I've installed 1.11P (PAL) version. These are the changes I've spotted:
- 1080P/24 now works perfectly. The player changes automatically to 24P if the source is 24P, and the playback is smooth.
- UPnP client added. Tried with a Synology NAS, and worked well even with 1080P mkv-s. No ff/fd and subtitle support though. (I believe it's not just because the Asus but also because the Syno UPnP server doesn't support it.)
- New popup window on the subtitle button. Size, position, color and delay can be set there.
- HDMI handshaking improved with some TV models (not all).
- Mp3 tag support. Still beta, sometimes reads junk.
- List by Author/Album/Genre in music. Still beta, not working or half-working.
- Some indications that a kind of jukebox functionality is coming (nothing functional yet though).
- I think they plan to add official wi-fi support soon (there are some new wifi driver files in the firmware).
And finally, both, the realtek audio and video firmware part has been updated/upgraded. Don't know what changed exactly. Some bugfixes at least i guess.

Hey, thanks! I bought this and the WDTV Live. The Asus keeps looking better and I continue to have issues with the WD. I think am going to return WDTV LIve and get a 2nd one Asus so that my wife won't get confused by different boxes. I am impressed that they are already making fix and updates, and also that I have had very few problems.
Btw besides owner manual, if u run ex set up from cd on window 7, does it install? Mine does not do any thing?????????????
tinycarrot 10-19-09, 11:26 PM does the new firmware give the picture quality a boost? making it comparable to wdtv/live?
thanks to whoever might know!

It's already comparable imo. Some people say WD's picture quality is superior. And some say WD has problems upscaling SD material. ;) I haven't noticed either.

Yeah, Asus has less features but does what it says. I hope they will improve in-movie navigation - ff/fd, jump-to-time, etc - in the next firmware. Once they do, I'll be very satisfied with this thing.
yellowsugga 10-20-09, 08:22 AM Does anyone have more information on how the thumbnails work? I tried copying a jpg with the same name in the same folder holding the video file (mkv), but nothing showed up. This was on a network drive, so I don't know if thumbnails is usuable only on local storage. Anyoen have it working yet?

I definitely will be keeping an eye on how this turns out.
jvillain 10-20-09, 01:49 PM Every thing has worked for me except being able to get UPnP working with myth. I am going to take another run at it today. I see my yammy receiver tring to talk to myth and not getting any where. That isn't a surprise though as the yammy hates every one. But doing a tcp dump only shows the O!Play making an occasional call on the network. I have added
route add -net 239.0.0.0/8 eth0
on the myth box but that hasn't helped. It would be nice if ASUS would offer some info on what kind of UPnP support they have added.
anyone having issue with HDMI sound? I read some people are not getting audio with HDMI output.
How do you disable subtitles. They are on by default. Pressing the subtitle button brings up a menu with no obvious place that says off.

Press subtitle, then press OK, press up/down to change to "off", press OK again to submit, then press "back" or subtitle to hide the popup menu.
Should be easier though....
Hey,
I have WDTV live AND cinematube.
However im having problems with both media players.
I just need someone to confirm that the PQ of the WDTV Live is really superior to that of the ASUS. I mean is it really true?
Can someone do any proper testing?
Also,
How is the volume in movies when connected directly to the tv speakers via HDMI?
Do I need to crank up the volume a lot vs wdtv?

Actually I ran into this last night playing a ripped vob. When it is in preview mode I got sound right away. When I actually selected the movie and it went full screen I had to wait 10 secs or so for sound. That is running to my yammy receiver that does HDMI hand shaking well with every one. It's odd.

I never noticed a difference between the Asus and WDTV LIve in PQ.
The volume seems to be the same and the Asus has volume buttons on the remote.
extreme9040 10-21-09, 04:28 PM does the asus play all the mp4 videos without choppy movement?
Hmm
I still have 7 days to return this to best buy. assuming best buy policies for this device is 14 days.
Extreme: Please post the link to that mp4 file.
I also having choppy movement with mp4 files in the WD TV Live. I want to know if it works on the ASUS.
mmoran27 10-21-09, 11:12 PM All sorts of sound and stuttering.
Works fine on my WD LIVE. I will try out the new firmware.
Can the firmware be updated from 1.07 tp 1.13? Or is it necessary to go through the versions between 1.07 and 1.13? Thanks!

I'm guessing you can go directly to 1.13. Most manufacturers make firmware updates all inclusive. I downloaded it and I did not read anything to the contrary. Asus posts older firmware too - it seems they have always done that. My Asus P5Q Motherboard has the last 4 firmware revisions on the website.

Wow, I have watched a bunch of M2TS files on my Asus. The largest was 1080p and 14 GB I think. The only issue I ever had with stuttering is if I change subtitles. I don't know why, but when I get awful stuttering. If I don't, then I get very smooth playback.
My WDTV live was a different story. Half the time I would select a file, I would get that blue rotating circle forever. I would have to power the thing off to get it to work again.

I also have that problem with the WDTV2 but just occasionally. I have had to unplug it a couple of times now. I have never had that problem with my O!Play. There are a zillion posts here on the WTV making it less than useful to get information. I like the WDTV2, but I do regret getting it. Should have just stuck with my Apple TV and MVix Ultio. I don't regret buying the O!Play. It's really nice.

Just flashed my o!play with 1.13N. No problems flashing.
Seems like they've added basic BD-ISO support. No menus, just plays the largest file in the iso, but it's a step in the right direction.
I'm still having issues with video stuttering and audio dropouts on m2ts files as well as the BD-ISOs. I'm looking into whether it's a network problem or not.

Thanks for posting, JeffNLA. I went ahead and updated the firmware, and all is well now. With the previous version, I could not get 16:9 aspect ratio on my Westinghouse displays.

I'm glad it worked for you. 1.13 actually made my unit unusable. It will no longer connect to my network (Synology NAS 409) drive correctly. There is no way to delete the "my shortcuts" and recreate it. I get "invalid file format" when browsing network files. I hope ASUS patches this pretty quick.

Same problem I am having. Someone suggested that I delete the file "bookmark.db" through telnet, however that still didn't stop the O!Play from trying to log into my shares automatically. Even though it says "Logon Successful" there are no files showing. I tried changing the password to one of my shares and it still says "Logon Successful", which obviously says something weird is going on... (obviously not truly logged on!).
One good thing is that both 1.11 and 1.13 have UPNP working, so I am able to access the files on my HP home server through that...
We really need a shortcut and login info editor in O!Play!
(How can you ad the shortcut and password memory feature without providing a means to delete or edit it!?)

Check this out - from the o!play forums on asus web site- here is a link..

It says log in with Telnet and Create the file manually.
here is a quick synopsis - I'm going to try this in a bit.
cd /usr/local/etc/dvdplayer
vi NetworkBrowser.ini
[MAIN]
num=2
[0]
label='DISKSTATION1'
id=''
pw=''
domain=''
hostname='DISKSTATION1'
ip1=0
ip2=0
ip3=0
ip4=0
[1]
label='DISKSTATION2'
id='admin'
pw='xxxxxxxxxxxx'
domain=''
hostname='DISKSTATION2'
ip1=0
ip2=0
ip3=0
ip4=0
Then reboot
Updated to 1.13P with no issues. Stuff I've noticed...
1, Browsing is so much faster over network (not UPNP)
2, ID3 tags are working more often than not though quite often I get random chinese characters which various players on Vista don't show me, its all English.
3, Shared folders for "guest" now under Vista now work! I guess Windows 7 also.
4, Logging in to Vista even with the correct details doesn't work, this was the work around for sharing not working so not a big deal now.
5, MOV files that are MP4 now work (from my camera, don't think they worked before)
6, You can view photos under movie option, saves switching modes.
7, Photo has 'Ken Burns effect' Ken Burns Effect - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Odd things....
mpeg1 and 2 don't play from my NAS over the network but using a UPNP server e.g PMS, with no transcoding just file streaming they play fine or from USB stick. I guess this is just by Buffalo NAS playing up.
Some of these might have been in update 1.11 bar the top 3.
Everdog 11-02-09, 02:58 PM In the next few days I am going to upgrade to the latest verion (firmware). My question is, has the issue with Windows 7 been fixed? I am upgrading from Vista to Windows 7 this weekend.
JeffNLA 11-03-09, 12:55 PM Don't upgrade to 1.13. Go read the ASUS forums. Your buffalo is not the issue NX3. This firmware is horrible. Someone on the ASUS site hacked 1.11 to allow downgrading back to it.
You can read about the problems here
http://vip.asus.com/forum/topic.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=O!Play+HDP-R1&board_id=19
peterk2005 11-03-09, 09:42 PM I wouldn't say it's horrible. It definitely fixes some issues while opens others. If you don't have issues with version 1.11 then don't upgrade, if you have, they it's worth a try. You can downgrade back to 1.11 now, if you don't like it. :)
