I am just about done with my dedicated theater and will be posting pictures soon. My last thing to do is install baseboard. I would like to paint them black, but not sure how that would work. I would like to go with a wide board, but the room is small. Do you think 5-6 inch board is to wide for a 14x16 room. Would greatly appreciate some pictures of black baseboard installed in you home theaters. Thanks guys!

I think I had 5" baseboards in my old place (12x17). Black was great.

I guess it depends on how you are finishing the rest of the room. Do you have any pics?

I used a 1" thick trim board as a baseboard and painted it black. In my case I felt it worked well with the fabric panel walls and gave the right offset for the treated walls. It's also easy to keep clean.

One more question. Should I prime or just put on a few coats of the black paint.

And be sure to prime them first. It seriously cuts down on scuffs and tearing of the paint.

I'm doing mine black - they need another coat and I don't have any pictures yet but thus far they are looking really nice. I'd recommend the black as well.

I've got a related question for everyone...

What type of paint are you using for your trim? Flat, eggshell, satin? I understand we want flat for walls and ceilings to minimize glare, but wouldn't flat paint on the base and door trim be a real PITA regarding scratches, scuffs, etc?

We did satin for the trim, flat for the black ceiling/walls, and eggshell for the red/browns.

I regret using flat paint on my walls and trim. The "flatness" is just too easily damaged. I think one of the reasons the paint is flat is that it has a microscopic fuzziness that can be easily burnished by simply brushing up against it. And touch-ups don't blend very well. Maybe it's the color I used, don't know for sure. Next time I'll go with egg shell which I think is the next step up.
Anyway, I think black trim can look great.
