Well here it is...(EDIT: now finished as of 12/10/2009)

after joining here in Jul 2005, to learn about my last AVR and maybe how to display movies from my PC to my 48" Rear PJ Mitsubishi, and another 60 odd posts, and hours reading about and being jealous of you "real" dedicated HT geeks and my wife telling me too damn many times "Turn it down!!" and "Does it have to be so loud" and most recently "Get that thing (http://www.playseats.com/)out of my Living Room!!"

I'm now drunk from the Kool-Aid you all chug, and with no further ado present my building thread as I progress....

My plan a year ago when I first heard "Get that thing (http://www.playseats.com/)out of my Living Room!!" was to take half my unfinished basement and use my 3 yr old Denon AVR 886, buy a $1,200 projector and maybe display on the wall....Oh well at this point I still haven't figured out which of these fancy schmancy new Projectors I have to have but I did order my screen today (cart before horse?)

So far the list is

Receiver (Edit replaced with Onkyo TX-NR807 7.2-Channel A/V Surround Home Network Receiver (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002HHM0C0?ie=UTF8&tag=knoxfamily-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B002HHM0C0) formerly AVR 886 (http://www.usa.denon.com/ArchivedAVReceivers.asp?archivedModelSearch=true&clearCurrent=true&archivedCategory=AV&archivedModel=AVR-886S&imageField.x=11&imageField.y=11)(nice 7.1 but composite only, no HDMI :( for now....) let me know if you would like to buy my old Denon AVR
Onkyo DV-BD507 Blu-ray Disc Player, Black (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002HHLYEU?ie=UTF8&tag=knoxfamily-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B002HHLYEU)
5 Showtime Chairs by Custer ...good guy David Hills great prices at http://www.hometheatersupplies.net/Furniture.html one row of three the front two are on the side of my Playseat http://www.playseat.com/
just ordered 130" Center Stage XD from SemourAV (http://www.seymourav.com/screens.asp)
Main Speakers Polk Audio Monitor 50 (http://www.polkaudio.com/homeaudio/products/recent/monitor50/)
Center is a Polk Audio CS1 (http://www.polkaudio.com/homeaudio/products/recent/cs1/)
Sub is a Polk Audio PSW505 12-Inch Powered Subwoofer (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000092TT0?ie=UTF8&tag=knoxfamily-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000092TT0)
I just bought 4 new Polk RC85i surround & back speakers (http://www.polkaudio.com/customaudio/rci/index.php?s=rc85i)

Projector!!! settled on Panasonic PT AE4000U (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002W7CW32?ie=UTF8&tag=knoxfamily-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B002W7CW32)
ButtKickers settled on ButtKicker BKA300 Wireless Home Theater Kit (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001HBH1B2?ie=UTF8&tag=knoxfamily-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B001HBH1B2)
Rope Lights - done
New Receiver -- done replaced with Onkyo TX-NR807 7.2-Channel A/V Surround Home Network Receiver (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002HHM0C0?ie=UTF8&tag=knoxfamily-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B002HHM0C0)
Subwoofer and or another Monitor 50 to match the other two now that I'm transparent...

added January 2010

Acer AspireRevo AR1600-U910H Black/White Desktop PC (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002O3W44Q/ref=oss_product)

Before the pic I want to ask for a vote on the name for the theater....by way of background I live with three women, well two women and one is blossoming....the girls are huge Gilmour Girls fans, the neighborhood theater in Gilmore Girls is called Red, White and Black, we are big Michigan State Spartan Fans (Green/White), the theater will be dark green and black with maybe a block S on the back wall, my name is Don, the theater is in the basement....

With no further adieu...First of course the layout -- click through to see full screen/size until I move my pics...

Something tells me you're going to call it the Green, White and Black Theater. :)
This is the best of both worlds, the ladies can say its named after Gilmore girls and you can say its named after MSU. That playseat is gonna be a blast in there.

That Gilmore Girls can really suck the ladies in. My wife would watch it when it was on, man did Loralie get on my nerves, she sounded like a machine gun at times.

Good luck with and enjoy the build.

Thanks Schneedoo, well the naming vote is running amazingly close.

Surround speakers arrived today! I did a bit of pre-wiring last night and might get a refurb deal on a JVC RS1U with a two yr warranty, even thought this PJ it's two yrs old I've read good things about it.

Insulation ordered and Drywall to be delivered Friday and my heat runs will be moved Friday as well....

Found black carpet!!! my wife thinks it will show lint....but not in the dark ;)

ROFLMAO, funny you should mention it as that was the seed that motivated me to build this whole thing, well that and the wife saying "Get that thing out of my living room!!"

As I recall it was just under $250 (Amazon/Ebay/Google) about 15 months ago, I had bought Forza 2 and "liked it a bit", bought a force feedback steering wheel and liked it more, put the wheel on an ironing board (adjustable height) sitting on the coffee table (better), then late one night browsing the net "Honey, do you mind if I buy a driving seat for my birthday? around $250?" "Whatever".....until it arrived and she said "WTF is that?"

The seat really, really makes driving games a blast, hours on end...even for an old fart like me whose thumbs (shooting/sports games) aren't 19 anymore

Even on my old a 48" rear PJ Mitsubishi I sit about 4 ft from the screen and it's "fun" -- but bigger will be better...think about the arcade driving seats, but much more comfortable/adjustable....

thanks for the reply. That sounds really cool. HOWEVER, I would buy the playseat, then i would "have" to spend another 300 bucks on the G27 wheel...:) then im looking at around 600 bucks or so...

Oh well, awesome idea, I think i will hold off and keep my eyes peeled for a deal on one.

Good luck with the HT build. Keep the pics coming!

Looking good so far. Your room size is very nice you will get lots of use out of the room. You will be very happy you put Dri-core down. I did a subfloor as well, different product but with a similar result and instantly made a huge change in the "feel" of the floor and the comfort level of bare/sock feet on the floor. While you are at this stage be sure to prewire for every thing you can think of and then run more. Much easier now vs. trying to do so after the fact.

RTROSE

Lansing: at .25 to hang and .35 to finish it was a pretty easy decision, I'm a big DIY guy but I'm not a drywaller, even if I were to have paid myself $10 I'd be "behind" given how incompetent and slow I work

I have been working with a very good carpenter who tolerates me assisting and that has brought down my labor cost as well, he agreed to $25/hr and we have about 30 hours in together....

Your riser looks super close to the wall and right in the path as you enter the room. Is that just the way the angle of the picture is? Otherwise the room looks great.

you're right it is "super close"....not handicap accessible and not up to code, but my wife and I are thin and I figure this will keep her that way

the room is only 135" wide, my seats will be 104" wide the riser is 120", the plan was for 15" on the left at "floor level" and about 15" on the right in a "step up" on the riser.

I've test walked it countless times now. While not "simple and clear" to walk past it, 15" is really plenty of room to "get by..

Interestingly I rec'd my chairs last night, they came in 5 huge 4'x4' boxes on a pallet, I had to unpack and carry them downstairs in a bit of a rush as I had basketball tickets (MSU 75 over Gonzaga 71).

Anyway I rec'd two of the wrong chairs, so now I have a row of two "extra" chairs, I'd needed two individual chairs and rec'd "a row of two"...

So if anyone wants a helluva good deal on brand new in the box chairs let me know..

The problem with this approach is that someone walking into the room when it is dark (in use) will most likely run into it/trip over it. Your best bet would be to put the riser and the chairs up against one wall and leave a wider path on the other side. This might not be a good option depending on how often you will fill all the seats. Another option is to make the riser the full width of the room and put rope lights around the steps, this way even in a dark room people will be able to see the riser and steps.

In any case, you will want more than 15" - it may seem OK now, but it will get unlivable quickly.

Thanks -
First you can't really trip over the riser without running into the back of the chair as the chair is directly above it and at 13" (riser) + 29" (chair back) =" pretty darn tall.

Second I am wrapping the riser with rope lights deflected (made "indirect"") by a 1.5" lip...and on a dimmer switch....

Finally I don't entertain much if at all...so it's almost always me then wife and 2 kids = four chairs....but I figured I should just buy one more to fill it out...then the game seat is an "OK" chair if 6 ppl are there....Thinking about bar stools in the way back....

Well, we certainly can't tell you what to do (all evidence to the contrary ), but please think about it some more before you finish the riser. If your primary use is for a max of 4 people, then having two seats in the rear centered, a third up against the wall, and a wider path on one side would IMHO be better than having the three seats centered and narrow paths on both sides.

Thanks Chris, maybe you missed the pictures but the riser is done.....I've thought about it way, way too much to reconsider at this point, my 72 yr old father-in-law managed to get through that gap last night. dabagboy
12-01-09, 08:12 AM
well I managed to pull the wrinkles out of the screen, I'll try to get some pix up tonight, ordered everything I need, PJ, mount, HDMI cables, etc...

Ended up buying a new receiver that I think I'll like Onkyo TX-NR807 (http://www.crutchfield.com/p_580TXN807B/Onkyo-TX-NR807.html?search=onkyo+807&ssi=0&tp=179)
and the Onkyo BluRay player to go with it.

My carpet probably won't be here / installed until 12/9 or so....but my question is this....assuming I have everything else by this Friday should I set up my "stuff" for a "demo" before the carpet arrives? or wait to get the "full effect as the plywood floor isn't really the same as the black carpet I've ordered....???

sdmfer
12-01-09, 09:47 AM
I would definately wait until the carpet is in. :)

however, why not go with a PS3 as the blu-ray player? Then you get an all-in-one kinda thing (even if you dont wanna use it for games)

dabagboy
12-01-09, 10:53 AM
Do you really think I can go a whole weekend without plugging that damn projector in? it's driving me nuts....the best thing would be if UPS delayed some of the stuff til next Monday and removed temptation.

About the PS3 I was tempted but have an xbox360 already and didn't want to have to start collecting games for both consoles :(
and crutchfield was selling a great "package deal" on the Blu Ray player for $100 with the receiver...

sdmfer
12-01-09, 11:03 AM
What PJ did you end up getting? (dont know if you mentioned it or not already)

Seriously though, I would wait. There's also the added benefit of less dust once the carpets in.

Here's my moviational/hypnosis speech for the day:

In a low slow droning voice:
Dabagboy, you can do this, fight the urrrrggge, get a case of beer, drink heavily and look at your purchases sitting there still in the UNOPENED boxes. Go online and search through the reviews, setups, tweaks etc for each thing you bought. you will NOT, and I repeat will not set these things up until you have a nice cozy carpet to rest your tired feet on..........or just drink until you cant stand....you wouldnt want to drop the projector while trying to set it up wasted...LOL.

Ok, that was just a waste of my time. It sounds funnier in my head.

I bought the Panasonic AE4000

LOL, no it was funny as you wrote it but the problems with your suggestion are that

1) a case of beer would definitely motivate me to start trying to plug things in

2) that's exactly why I quit drinking 4 yrs ago - too little drunken self control (wow that's an oxymoron

Wow what a week and what a joyful weekend...

My new receiver and Blu-Ray and ButtKicker arrived Tuesday, the projector (Panny AE4000) arrived Wednesday. I almost wanted to test things during the week but decided I should at least wait until the mount arrived. That came Friday.

I went to an MSU basketball game Friday night and got up at 7:00a Saturday to wire things up and eventually hang the PJ.

Honestly I spent ALL DAY Saturday from 7a-7p connecting wires, then gettting the audio working so I'd have tunes for the PJ hanging, one trip to home depot and over to a buddy for a fish tape, by the time I got home the mailman had brought my first three Blockbuster Blu-Ray movies. Cleaning, cleaning and touching up paint and checking things and finally a good 2 hours fishing the HDMI cable through a conduit pipe that the fish tape somehow managed to escape and pop out in a "strange" place....but at least close enough to the receiver that I could run it the rest of the way.

Finally about 4:30p I hung the projector, and plugged it in......

tada...

Somehow all my online screen "calculators" were a bit off, as at 13'3" I could not fill a 130" diagonal, at max wide it was about 2-3 inches too small :(

it may well have been that I drilled and mounted at 13'3" and the front "lens" itself was forward of that by a few inches :(

That was mildly frustrating...

The first massive frustration was that I hate the cheap $13.99 crappy mount
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/753247318X/ref=ox_ya_os_product
it is a bit like hanging the projector on a spring...push it one way and it bounces right back, over push it and it might spring back not enought or too far...then over time it just moves and settles into another "wrong" position.....it's like the devil...

Nonetheless at about 4p I had told the family that Saturday at 8p would be the "Sneak Preview" night -- And for the record I already buckled into showing the highly forgettable Jeniffer Aniston chick flick "He's Just Not That Into You."

Well the first thing that grabbed me was the audio...that Blu-Ray / THX intro blew me away, my old crappy 2" surround speakers (4 for $99) were bigger crap than I'd imagined, should have replaced long ago but the family room wasn't "designed" for 8.5" surround and back speakers....now I know why I wanted 7.1 channels 4 yrs ago...to bad I didn't do it right back then...

Well the picture (once aligned) was nothing short of breathtaking, even my wife and kids (who rarely compliment dumb old Dad) were effusive. We made it through the movie with me only needing to re-adjust the mount once when it had moved about 2-3" off the screen, it help that it was in 2.35:1 so there was a lot of black space on the bottom anyway. 16:9 makes the alignment more challenging.

The final straw in placement frustrations was that the back of the projector projected into the "aisle" in front of the second row of seats, I clipped it with my head 1x and it was a bit too much "in view" (at least peripherally) of the second row of seats. While we watched the somewhat boring or at least predictable chick flick I made up my mind to move the damn thing back 4' to be over the heads (and behind the second row).

So up bright and early again Sunday....actually the first 3-4 hours supervising the AT&T uVerse tech who arrived at 8:45a as at 6p Saturday night I called as my TV signal had disappeared on my DVR box, and I had scheduled the AT&T downstairs hookup for the following week and the lost signal was fortuitous allowing me to get him to install the new box downstairs...the poor guy was there every bit of 3 hours, eventually (finally) ended up replacing my "residential gateway" i.e. router....but everything worked when he left!!!

Next I realized I'd need to go fishing again...this time with no conduit and into an I-beam and HVAC ducts that were impenetrable. Sadly the marker joist that I thought I'd located and intended to follow on both sides was one of two that were 3" apart, so 2 hours 2 ceiling holes and 5 holes in the header roughing in the room (outside) I finally found my tape!!! Another hour to hang and realign (with a junk mount) that now had one of three screws broken as well and I was done again about 4:00p!!!

Just in time to watch "Body of Lies" lots of cool explosions....sub shaking the room...no complaints from the ladies above!! I'm waiting for the carpet or at least another day before the Buttkicker installation.

hey dabagboy, which model of playseat is that? I was at my brothers the other day playing with his sons Forza Game and 360 wheel, and boy it was pretty cool. I was telling them to pick up this playseat thing....

Do you have any other pics of yours?

thanks very much. I think i might just have to pick one up, but since I have the ps3 I might go for the logitech G27 to go along with the seat, but man that wheel is pricey...
