The Linux installation had a restriction which sort of kills that. You had to assign 10GB to either the PS3 or Linux, and the rest of your drive space to the other. So, if you gave most of your space to Linux, that left you with 10GB for everything PS3-related like game installations, save files, DLC, music to be played in certain games, PSN videos, etc. Or, giving most of it to the PS3 left you with 10GB in Linux. Each entity was closed off to the other, so any data in Linux wasn't accessible in the XMB and vice-versa.

Now, if all you were using was Linux and you didn't play games, this might work. Bear in mind that all of your media activity would have to be done in Linux. Even if this still sounds tempting, I think you'd be better off building a PC anyway, as PS3 Linux was limited to 256MB of RAM. That's rather paltry these days.

Linux on PS3 doesn't have native access to PS3 graphics processor. It has to run in VESA mode which runs the video at the slowest mode.

I don't think while in Linux, it can read Blu-ray media. Only DVD.

You can build a nice HTPC for not much money nowdays. The GA-E7AUM-DS2H motherboard is a great place to start...
