After trying everything to get my year old PS3 to recognize game and blu-ray discs I purchased the Maxell Blu-Ray Lens cleaner online. Imagine my disappointment when I opened the package and it simply contained a disc with two holes in it. What a ripoff I thought. With nothing to lose though I stuck the disc in the PS3, followed the directions for cleaning and crossed my fingers. Two minutes later it said done. Right. Took a game disc, inserted into PS3 and to my amazement it started right up. Tried 2 or 3 more discs with the same result. Not really sure how it worked but I feel like I have saved myself the huge hassle and expense of dealing with Sony customer service. Icing on the cake is the disc actually contains some other handy utilities. Your results may vary but for me I couldn't be happier.

Wow,..good for you. Will have that disc in mind if that ever happens to me.
Thanks.

The two holes got my curiosity so I though I should post that:

Wind Funnel Cleaning System
Maxell’s BR-LC lens cleaner uses its exclusive patented Wind Funnel cleaning technology to safely remove dust and dirt. Unlike other lens cleaners that use brushes and chemicals, the BR-LC delicately removes excessive build-up and residue. The cleaning process is simple. Insert the lens cleaner disc into your Blu-ray player. While it is in the player, the disc rotates and the two holes on the disc generate an air stream in the spiral motion. This air stream changes into an "air shower" when it passes through the two holes and reaches the narrow space of .15mm between the lens and the disc. The power of the air shower gently removes dust particles on the lens without damaging the player.

I had been having games freeze more and more and thought I might be losing my BD drive. I read up on this cleaning disc and thought it was worth a try since I had not used any cleaner in my machine. Lo and behold, freezes are gone or greatly reduced.

Why did I want this one? Because it cleans without anything touching the lens, unlike those ones with the little plastic hairs stuck to the disc. As a bonus it will work on my DVD player as well. I'm glad I got mine.

I love the cleaner as well. It brought back my friends Samsung Blu Ray player and my Soverign DV-5900M DVD changer. I have posted about this several times. People have never tried it, poo poo-ed the cleaner.

I dont understand why people would give advice on products that they never used.

Agreed. I understand the skepticism but unless you give it a try no need to badmouth. At under $15 bucks it is definitely worth a shot if you are having problems or if your console is in a high traffic, dusty, cat inhabited area like mine.

Where does the dust go when the disc sucks it off the lens? Does it stick to the disc and you clean it off afterwards? If not I'm not sure I like the idea of it picking the dust up off my lens pushing it elsewhere in the console.

I'm pretty sure that's the idea PVT...but if you get the dust "unsettled" then the fans may end up blowing it out the vents.

I picked this up a while back. I've only used it once, but it's nice to have on hand in case of emergency.

If you're getting enough dust off of the lens to potentially damage the player you have issues no cleaner can rectify.

Good point gluvhand. As I said when I opened the case and saw it was basically a disc with two holes in it I felt pretty ripped off. 5 minutes later I had a huge smile on my face (as did my 8 and 11 year old sons). As the commercial says--- Priceless.

Presumably this isn't just sucking dust off the lens, it's sucking dust out of the rest of the disc drive as well. That's all very good but I don't know where exactly it's pushing that dust and if it would be something that might cause worse problems long-term.

I definitely see the appeal but it seems to me the better option would be to open the PS3 up (not hard to do) and clean the dust out of it (also not hard to do). That way you're removing the dust from not just the disc drive, but the rest of the console as well. As opposed to sucking the dust out of the disc drive and relocating it to a different component in the system.

I get ya. But I would think, and may be wrong, like a previous poster said, that once that dust gets loosened up, the PS3 fans would exhaust it. Maybe using the cleaning disc when the PS3 fans are alive and kicking is the way to go.

Plus if your lens isnt reading due to dust.... thats about as bad of a problem a PS3 can have.
