View Full Version : Emergency lighting source ?
Anyone have a source for a emergency light that plugs into a standard outlet but only lights up if the power goes out?
I have a flashlight of sorts that plugs into an outlet but it is also a night light so it glows whenever the lights go out as well as lighting up when there is a power outage. If it were not a nightlight, it would be perfect.
Anyone have a link to such a light ? A Black finish is preferred.
My theater is finished (okay, they are never finished) so I must use something that can plug into one of my existing outlets... I don't want an emergency exit sign/light.
Thanks!
Combo emergency light / flashlight .
seems to have the option to turn off night light.
sorry not in black

Johnsteph10 10-20-09, 10:40 AM I have those exact flashlights/nightlight things, too. I simply popped the cover off of the nightlight part and disabled the light.
Thanks, but I don't see where it states that the night light can be shutoff.
I have a similar light that I got at Sam's club... with an on-off-auto switch. The On position turns on the flashlight.
The Auto position turns on the night light if the ambient light is low and switches to full power if the AC goes out.
The Off position shuts everything off.
I need one that will turn on when the AC goes out.. but doesn't have the night light on automatically.
We used to have one of the flashlight types you mentioned, but it only had a small led, that was on when plugged in, but it could be easily covered with tape.
I haven't found one like it yet. That's something I'm going to look more into, I hadn't really thought about loosing power, in a completely light controlled room.
If you find something definitely post it here.
*Edit, wow in the few minutes it took me to look for something a billion posts came. Thanks
Johnsteph10, that's a thought. I tried to do that with mine but the nightlight also uses some of the LED bulbs in the flashlight section so I couldn't entirely get it to stay off. Do you have the exact one that knkknk listed?
Thanks.
TBeck2000 10-20-09, 10:49 AM Intermatic makes a couple in-wall units in the $25-30 range that fit in a standard switchplate and will provide power failure lighting without being too intrusive:
EL100 - http://www.intermatic.com/~/media/files/intermatic/catalog/pages/064.ashx
EL200 - http://www.intermatic.com/~/media/files/intermatic/catalog/pages/065.ashx
Looks like pretty good prices here: http://www.1000bulbs.com/Power-Failure-Pathway-Lights/
Thanks Tbeck2000 - those inwall units might be the best bet. That would get folks out of the theater and then they could grab one of the plug-in flashlights/nightlights that I have in the basement to find their way out.
thanks!
silvershark 10-20-09, 09:06 PM You could make one of these pretty easily by using a battery and photocell.
The photocell would turn the light on when the lights go off, and the battery would get charged by your incoming electrical.
This is how many florescent sp? emergency lights work. They are called emergency ballasts.
use google and you will find out how.
The only problem would be if your theatre is dark all the time anyhow it would come on all the time.
To fix this you could connect a contactor or power relay to the circuit so it would require manual intervention to turn on the emergency light.
The most common is hooking a speaker up so you clap your hands and the light comes on.
Here, I used youtube and this is a basic concept.

Emergency lights are a requirement in virtually every commercial building. I did a quick search using "emergency light" on the Home Depot site and it showed that they carry 11 different ones.
Although not in black the big box stores will have plug in emergency lights that are not night lights. I have two in my home but have not put one in the HT yet. Another useful item is a wireless remote extender for my wired doorbell that puts a chime in the HT. There was no way to hear the doorbell when watching a movie without it and no way to hardwire one.
I ordered the Intermatic unit that was posted - seems to be the best choice for my situation. Home Depot doesn't have it, or at least not my HD and I didn't find it on their website.
