Hi,

I've setup wireless routers before, but only via "wired" internet connection to the router. Here's the situation:

1. I have a "Wireless ISP". i.e. I have no physical internet connection.
2. I have 2 PC's and 1 PS3 connected currently to the ISP, all using either internal or external wireless adapters. Everything works great.
3. I want to stream media to my PS3 from 1 PC.

How would I hook up the router?

Thanks,
-Steve..

One way I would do this would be to flash dd-wrt software onto the wrt54g router.

Next you set up the wrt54g with dd-wrt as a client bridge I think and make that as if it was a client to your wireless ISP.

Then you create virtual lan or whatever its called in there to whatever you want to call it.

Next connect all your machines to the newly created virtual lan that you created on your own network. Basically you just created a network of your own with the router routing all traffic to your wireless lan.

OK if I did that how would the router recieve an input from my ISP?
I have nothing to connect to the "Internet" connection on my router.
I just tried hooking 2 RJ-45 cables between my router/PC.

a. I have 2 RJ-45 jacks on the back of my PC.
b. My "internet in" adapter is USB.
c. I hooked one RJ-45 cable: PC to Router "Internet In"
I hooked a 2nd RJ-45 cable: PC to Router "Port 1"

I hoped this would pass the internet signal from my USB adapter through the PC, out to the Router Internet In, and back through the router to communicate to my PC.

I'm totally at a loss here. One guy said that since my PC and PS3 are connected to the same ISP they would see each other. Well I tried "PS3 Media Server". It won't get pass the setup. Doesn't see the PS3. I can't understand how he thinks my PS3 is supposed to see my PC through my ISP...

The Linksys techs heads are even spinning on this one. I better just stick to using my DVD writer or connect an RJ-45 cable across the room. I can only imagine the software settings involved to get this to work.

The basic problem that you have is that you all your devices are connecting to the ISP directly. The only way that the PS3 could see files on your PC would be to go out over the wireless connection, hit the internet/ISP's network and get redirected to your PC. You really just have several standalone devices connected to the internet, much like a bunch of people in a coffee shop using wireless. They can all get out on the internet but cannot connect to each other. To solve this issue you need to have LAN (local area network) setup in your house so that all your devices can talk to each other but also reach the internet if needed. This is what a router would normally do for you. If you are going to connect the PS3 and PC together via a cable you will need a cross over cable or a switch. You will also have to make sure that they are on the same subnet with proper IP address.

If you haven't already asked I would recommend that you call your ISP to see if they can offer you a solution. They may have encountered this request before and be able to assist you. Who knows they may be able to provide you with a wired/wireless router that is configured to work with their service. Just a thought.

Jeff

This morning Linksys told me what I'm trying to do is possible, but I think technically it is way over my head.

They said:
1. Disable the wireless adapter on both PC and PS3. OK..
2. Install the router on the PC (RJ-45 from Router port 1 to PC, no RJ 45 to Router "Internet In") So the only connection I have to the router is Port-1 to PC Ethernet connection.
3. Re-enable the adapter.

Here is the problem I have now:
1. The router won't complete installation without an internet connection. It just keeps looping "searching for internet". So I bypassed that part and chose DCHP as I have no idea what IP to put in. Routers don't show up in device manager. When I try to connect to the router via browser (192.168.0.1) I get nothing. So I'm guessing it didn't get installed.
2. If I have the router connected the PC refuses to see the USB adapter. So I have no internet unless I disconnect the router..

I didn't think it would be this complicated to get a router to stream data from a PC. I guess you have to be a real wifi guru to do it without an incoming internet connection. I mean should I really have to get my ISP inlvolved if I'm just trying to transfer my own data from one device to another wirelessly?
