Hello all! I started my build a few months ago and have been posting it on a local Australian forum. I thought i might share it with everyone here. Things may be out of sync from time to time so bare with me. There are a few interesting things happening in my build (well, i think so anyway ;)) i hope you enjoy!

I had 2 bedrooms not doing much at all. They were both way too small for a dedicated cinema room so i pulled out the wall between them and now have a workable room.

The other half wasn't very keen on the plan but with enough begging and pleading she saw it my way. The room is 6.2m x 4.0m x 2.4m. The ceiling is way too low for my liking but the quotes i got to either raise to ceiling or lower the floor were just out of control! I have most of the build details sorted but still a little up in the air about colours. lol

I will be installing a pretty interesting Fiber Optic star ceiling the goes the complete length of the room. Also will have rope lighting running down both sides of the room. I'm building a false wall to hide my speakers and IB subwoofers behind. I'll be using a 120" - 130" 2:35.1 scope screen with AT fabric and an Aussiemorphic MKIII lens. I will post updates from time to time. I'm hoping the room, when finished, will be a great place to enjoy a movie.

This is just after i speant a day pulling all the plaster (Drywall) from the 2 rooms and pulling out the dividing wall.

Plaster (Drywall) fianlly up.

The craftwood (MDF) bulkhead is up. The rope lighting will sit in the middle channel. The star ceiling panels will go from one bulkhead across to the other.

NEXT UPDATE

Here is the next small update. I painted half of the bulkhead black and decided to paint the trim sliver. Even using quality masking tape there was still a little paint bleeding through. Not matter what i did i just couldn't get a nice sharp line between the silver and black paint.
So i bought a couple of bits of thin skirting. I painted the larger piece sliver then the smaller one black. Glued them together then tacked them to side of the bulkhead. This worked a treat! Not only are my lines nice and sharp but the two bits of skirting create a small step which suits the whole art deco look.

NEXT UPDATE

I finally got my hands on the wall lights i was after. It was a massive effort to get these things here from New York. I sent many emails back and forth to the supplier and after a while we just started having friendly chit chats. He told me him and his daughter were traveling to OZ for a holiday. Only visiting Sydney and Brisbane. I eventually conned him into talked him into visiting Melbourne. We met up at his motel and i picked up 5 of these beauties! I never thought i would be this excited about bloody lighting lol. Oh yeah, i saved about $300 in shipping.

NEXT UPDATE

I managed to build the riser today with all fingers still attached! I used polly insulation, bunnings ran out off fiberglass bats. The pics are pretty bad (mobile phone) but you get the idea. As you can see the room is now all fully black. The walls will end up having black textured wallpaper on them but i had to seal the plaster with black paint, also black will hide any seems in the wallpaper. I put a bit more trim up around the top of the room.

The skirting boards are in my brother-in-laws factory at the moment. He is making a art deco style skirting with 3 steps at the top and 2 silver metal strips going across the length.

Time for the Star Ceiling

I have be searching for the perfect and cheapest solution for the last couple of years. Everything i have found in Australia was $3000 to $4000 or more and honestly, rubbish. No flexibility, No PC control, No Wi-Fi etc..... I started reading about "Star-Ceiling designers" gear and was REALLY impressed. I had been chatting to them for a few months when released their new wireless PC controlled system. All for well under $1000AUD!

If you are considering a fiber optic star ceiling you can't go past "Star-Ceiling Designer" systems. Very good pricing and fully wireless with the new 2012 Modules . I think this is the most bang for your buck WOW factor for any dedicated cinema room. 3 different sizes of fiber with twinkling, Shooting stars etc... I'm just waiting for the Fidelio velvet to arrive so i can get started.

This system is pretty easy to setup and install. Most people use MDF and glue velvet to cover. My Star Ceiling is going to be about 3.5m x 6m so sheets of MDF will just to too heavy to work with. After searching for an alternative i found a type of foam core art board. I got a 20mm version that's pretty hard to find. It's VERY solid stuff and it weighs next to nothing! I will be using heavy duty velcro to attach this to the ceiling. Being that the LED modules are so small and being wireless this system can easily be installed to about any ceiling type with ease!

http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/5133/foamboard.jpg (http://img7.imageshack.us/i/foamboard.jpg/)

NEXT UPDATE

Well, the velvet arrived today finally! This stuff is just so black it's not funny. Below is a pic i took today. The far left is a sample of the blackest velvet Spotlite had in stock. The far right is my black speaker grill. The foam core board arrives tomorrow so i'll be spending the day trying to get a small bit of the star ceiling up and running. This, for me is the most exciting part of the build. If i can pull this off it's going be be a great feature.

http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/8051/velvetx.jpg (http://img14.imageshack.us/i/velvetx.jpg/)

A couple more pics. The ceiling panels arrived yesterday. They are huge! 3.2m x 1.20m. Also another pic of the 25m of velvet (shiny side is back of velvet).

NEXT UPDATE

OK, the Star ceiling is finally starting to come together. The extra fiber and velcro arrived yesterday. I spent a few hours today getting one of the 6 panels started. The first step was gluing the velvet to the massive 3.0m x 1.2m panels. This took bloody ages! This project really is a 2 man job, oh well, i have patience.

http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/7788/rollingvelvet.jpg (http://img36.imageshack.us/i/rollingvelvet.jpg/)

After about an hour of rolling and gluing this is what the finished product came out like. It's almost about the size of a 130" scope screen. The best thing is i can carry it around with one hand. Then i turned it over and almost went through a box of staples making sure it was secure.

http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/963/staplest.jpg (http://img43.imageshack.us/i/staplest.jpg/)http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/9238/finishedpanel.jpg (http://img34.imageshack.us/i/finishedpanel.jpg/)

Next was drilling the holes for the fiber. Once inserted i used tape to hold in place and cable ties to stop all the fiber tangling. The other ends of the fiber went into the LED module.

http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/8816/fiberf.jpg (http://img34.imageshack.us/i/fiberf.jpg/)http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/4626/ledr.jpg (http://img7.imageshack.us/i/ledr.jpg/)

This is a VERY small portion of the panel done. I couldn't help myself. ;)

NEXT UPDATE

Here is a couple of progress pics of the second star ceiling panel. The fibers havn't been glued or taped down yet to the back of the panel. Once glued into possition i will get out the nail clippers and trim the fibers coming out the front.

NEXT UPDATE

Time for the next small update. The gear room is just outside the cinema room it self. It was an old shower room once upon a time. Perfect size for a gear room really. I was going to buy a server rack but just can't stretch the funds far enough for $800ish for one. I built this MDF rack for $80 smile.gif Once i have it painted and the trim around the cut out in the plaster done it will look just fine. Here are the progress pics showing it in a few stages up to seeing what some of the gear looks like sitting in it.

NEXT UPDATE

Here is the next small update. Firstly, thanks very much to the people that offered their services. I will still take you up on the offer smile.gif. I decided i wanted the tray that goes down both sides of the room to also go across the front of the room also. I know i will kick myself when i see the first movie reflecting off it above the screen. Most likley i will run some velvet underneath it. I think the overall effect will be worth it though. You can see it above the frame that was also built today.

I had to build the frame out further from the wall than expected, losing MORE room space sad.gif I moved the false wall in another 20cm for a good reason though. If i ever wanted to change speakers at some stage to larger floor standers, the previous space would not have worked. Once the screen is up and the fabric panels cover the wall. The room will be 5.5m deep. The first row will be 3.7m from the screen.

Below the frame you can see the two holes in the floor for the IB subs. Dual 15" subs in each cavity. They will be spaced a liitle further apart then the holes you can see in the pic.

http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/5877/wall1.jpg (http://img94.imageshack.us/i/wall1.jpg/)http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/8153/wall2g.jpg (http://img11.imageshack.us/i/wall2g.jpg/)

NEXT UPDATE TODAY 10/22/09

Here is the next small update. Yesterday i painted the false wall frame black. It needs to be a dark colour because you don't want to see the light colour timber through the GOM fabric frames that sit on top of it. Then the Ultratel insulation arrived this morning. And i have spent most of the day cutting the batts into triangle pieces to make the SuperChunk bass traps. I love this stuff! it's very firm for insulation and the blade cuts through it in one slice. You can see in the photos i have left a 2" gap on both sides of the trap. I am so bloody itchy right now!

http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/9716/superchunk3.jpg (http://img40.imageshack.us/i/superchunk3.jpg/)

http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/6966/superchunk1.jpg (http://img7.imageshack.us/i/superchunk1.jpg/)

I thought i would also throw up a couple of photos of the lock i'm putting on the door. The first pic of the lock is closer to how it looks in the flesh. The next 2 just show way too much reflection. It's an Art Deco lions head if you can't tell. The lock uses combination or biometric fingerprint to open the latch. I know it's a wank but it's so cool :p lol

http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/7462/locky.jpg (http://img62.imageshack.us/i/locky.jpg/)

O.k. I'm now up to date. All new additions will be "live" so to say ;)

Nice work!! That Lions head door lock is crazy cool!!

Those sconces are really nice too!

Keep posting your progress seems like a great project.

Taking a big hit on property value though by eliminating 2 extra rooms?

Thanks oman321. Not really. It still have 3 bedrooms and will have one very nice home cinema which will add it's own value. Maybe it's the same in the US but here, almost every new home is build with a home cinema room. Well, an empty shell called a cinema room anyway.

G'day,

Nice to see another Aussie build going in - I think that takes the AVS total to about 4! :)

Love the door handles. Remind me of something out of Voltron...very cool.

Why aren't you putting dry wall in behind the screen wall? I assume its for acoustic reasons and that soundproofing isn't a concern?

Best of luck with the rest of it!

Hi Mate. Thanks! I will be putting MDF sheets on that wall. I'm keeping it uncovered at the moment because i'm putting the IB sub under the floor and need all the room i can get until it's in.

OMG - I must have one! These are fricken amazing.

Curse this! I'm trying to shave as much out of the budget as I can so I can afford a fang dangle AT strategy....Minister for Finance and Recreation wont be happy :D

BTW Jason - is that an exterior wall? I'd not be putting MDF on it unless it was the moisture resistant stuff. Have a look at HMR chipboard used for floors, might be a better option - MDF will fall apart if it gets wet.

Hi Jason

I like the bulkhead design, I might have to steal that Idea.
My ceiling is 8.5' (255cm) and I'm worried it's going to be to low but raising it is not going to be an option.
I saw you over at DTV so I will watch with interest.

Thanks Craig! My ceiling is only 2.4m and this bulkhead was a great option. Not too deep but does the job.

Here is the next update. A few small updates have happened since the last post.

Here is the progress of some of my acoustic panels for the room. I used dark burgundy GOM to wrap the frames. As you can see from the photos the height of the frames were almost to high as I only had a few millimetres to spare. I used "Ultratel" inside the frames. They are about 160cm x 100cm in size.

http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/2833/framet.jpg (http://img17.imageshack.us/i/framet.jpg/)

Long story short. The last rope lights I had turned out to be faulty. I got my money back and bought some RGB strip lights. This stuff is great! Fully remote control colour changing (16 million colours). They are VERY bright and have a tiny form factor.

http://img682.imageshack.us/img682/1756/ledligts.jpg (http://img682.imageshack.us/i/ledligts.jpg/)

Now the NEW wall lights. I really loved the original lights I found.....but these are nicer! Sorry about the photo quality but they are te best I can get from a phone camera.

http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/7209/newlights.jpg (http://img514.imageshack.us/i/newlights.jpg/)

It's IB time!!! I spent about 1.5 hours trying to dig through solid clay to drop the IB boxes into. It was a MASSIVE pain installing the drivers into the boxes once they were already fitted. There wasn't enough room to lower the boxes into place with the drivers installed. So it required a lot of crawling in the dirt under the house to get the job done. At least it was a cool 35-36 under the floorboards.

I think they came out very nice indeed! They look SO much nicer in real life. The only problem is to get them made I had to get a LOT made :( I'm not sure if this is aloud here but if anyone is interested in some shoot me a PM.

I have had an ever so slight update. Got a couple of things done yesterday.
First I had the back riser extended about 40cm to give people in the back row a little more leg room.

http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/2548/riser.jpg (http://img231.imageshack.us/i/riser.jpg/)

Next were frames for the front screen wall. In his pic you can see the timber frames mounted on the false wall and then painted black so you can't see them through the GOM fabric.

http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/8389/framex.jpg (http://img338.imageshack.us/i/framex.jpg/)

Next i stretched and stapled the fabric to the frames. After that I attached the velcro to the frames. This is industrial strength stuff! It would hold two stampeding rhinos together. The next pic you can see i have "roughly" attached the frames to the false wall. The flash shows the timber behind the material but it can't be seen usually.

Another small update. All 6 columns are now built. There will be 3 on each wall with an acoustic panel between each one. Each column will have one of my wall lights mounted close to the top.
My sparky showed up today for a quick quote. I booked him in for 2 weeks from now. Once he is done it all gets very exciting! I can get the wallpaper put up and carpet layed. It will actually start looking like a home cinema after about a year of on and off work.I think my wife is happier than i am. Her kitchen is next on the list lol.

You may notice only 5 columns in photos. After covering the front false wall with GOM and 5 of the columns I ran out by just over 2 meters !!! This stuff is just to expensive in Australia. About $70 per meter.

Wow, 6 months went quick!!! O.k things are finally back on track. I spent the last 2 days making 6 new acoustic panels. I sold off the earlier ones I made using burgundy GOM. The new ones are all black. I will have the builder here this coming Tuesday to install the 6 columns, skirting boards and shelving for the front JTR speakers. I hope to have the room up and running by the 30th April.

Are you planning to use an AT screen or you placing your speakers on either side of the screen behind the GOM fabric frames?

Also I always wondered with the side and rear pillars are you planning on placing bipole/dipole speakers behind these or just your regular direct firing ones?

Are you planning to use an AT screen or you placing your speakers on either side of the screen behind the GOM fabric frames?

Also I always wondered with the side and rear pillars are you planning on placing bipole/dipole speakers behind these or just your regular direct firing ones?

I will be placing the 3 front speakers behind the AT screen and the 9.2 width speakers behind the black GOM. Yep, a pair of the rear speakers will be inside the rear columns.

Another small update. This is the first time i have felt like there is light at the end of the tunnel. There is still ALONG way to go but the room is starting to take shape.
I now finally have all the columns installed and the skirting finished. Next will be a little work from my sparky and then the wallpaper. I'm crossing my fingers that
I will get a bit more done this weekend.

The first pic shows a couple of the columns fitted. Also a bit of prep work on the art deco skirting.

This pic shows the skirting almost done. The walls and carpet will both be black (matte). Having high gloss skirting should fit in nicely between them. I have checked the reflection and it should not be visable while watching a movie.

Next update. Been pretty busy today. I installed both doors today. The room has a standard size door jam so it was a little tricky getting them both in. Both doors are solid core and have a 2nd sheet of 12mm ply attached to each of them. Each door is about 30kg so it's was a real task getting them both in place. Between the 2 doors there will be an acoustic panel.

Next were the pedestals to hold up the JTR-12 front speakers. These also needed to be very sturdy as the sit right next to the 4 x 15" IB subs and also need to support 60kgs each. Each pedestal is braced between the timber front wall and the screen wall frame.

Just wondering if you have fired up the IB subs yet - I'm doing IB's in my theater and am a bit nervous since I haven't heard an IB sub yet - I hate to go through all that work and not end up liking them. I've been working on the chamber - considering its 12 sheets of OSB and 24 sheets of drywall this thing better be good.

I havn't fired them up yet but i have heard a couple of other IB setups. There is NO off the shelf sub that will come close to a good IB setup. I've owned and listened to many high end subs inc. DD18's, Gothams, Subs 2, REls etc....

Ive also owned subs from HSU and REL - The REL was a big disappointment. Used it with some B&W N805's and they were supposedly a match made in heaven, but it just didn't do anything for me.

Time for another update. After painting the inner bulkhead black I realised that it would still reflect a fair bit of light, especially directly above the screen. All the walls were going to be covered with black wallpaper also. After using Fedileo velvet for the ceiling everything else looked grey by comparison. So iv'e now decided to cover the bulkheads and walls in Fedileo velvet.
After about almost 3 hours just trying to attach one strip across the front bulkhead I wished I had never changed my mind. Its was a total NIGHTMARE putting it up. It's like putting contact on a giant textbook....upside down. lol It has a self adhesive backing that is so sticky that once it touches any surface its stuck for good. If you try and pull it off, the velvet just falls apart. The final result does look very nice though. I guess I'll keep at it. Gotta love a bat cave :)

Here are a couple of pics showing the start and finished job. The photos are pretty bad. It's hard to get a good pic of the velvet.
Anyone want to buy 10 rolls of black wallpaper? ;)

The next task was the double doors. They were both attached a few weeks ago but they shifted between now and then. The door frame couldn't handle the weight of both doors and started to bow. We had to take them both off and reinforce the frame and plane a few bits off both doors.

Pics below.

I saw a photo on google a couple of years ago of a very similar seat. I took the pic to my manufacturer and after about 4 or 5 prototypes they got them close to perfect. I was very picky. Solid timber frames, Fully spring loaded cushions and the highest grade velvet i could find. I actually flew overseas to hand pick the fabric and motorised mech my self.

Time for another update.

The first pic is the new cornice I just picked up. Another bit of Art Deco for the room. It will be painted a low sheen black.

After the massive headache I had putting the velvet up on the bulkhead I decided to take Richards advice. I went out and bought about 30m of coreflute. This stuff made life SO much easier! The second pic is the finished board with the cutout for the columns.

Where the coreflute board was screwed and glued to the base of the bulkhead there was a visable seem where the bottom joined the lip at the front. I couldn't think of a good way to hide the join. So why not make it a feature. I picked up handful of gold 3m aluminum extrusions. This covers the seem an looks pretty good too. The gold trim will match the trim on the seats perfectly.

I decided not to cover the walls with velvet as I wouldn't have enough for the job. I also didn't want to use the plain wallpaper i bought about a year ago either. I was at Bunnings this morning picking up some paint and as i was leaving i noticed a Spotlight store across the road. I ended up buying this black fabric that will really suit the room.

http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/5161/fabric1.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/33/fabric1.jpg/)

Uploaded with ImageShack.us (http://imageshack.us)

It was pretty easy to install. 100's of staples and an electric staple gun I will put up the beading to hide the seems in the next few days. I think it looks pretty good though. There will be acoustic panels covering most of the fabric but what you can see should look the part.

It's been along time since the last update. I've had so much other things happening it's been almost impossible to get things done.
I did get all the fabric up on the walls and also managed to get the Art deco cornice up and painted. The still need a bit of touching
up but in person look alot nicer than in the pics. It's pretty hard taking photos of 3 or 4 different shades of black...in a black room
with NO natural light.

Once again i have had trouble finding exactly what i want for my room. So, once again i had to resort to getting a couple of things custom made. Well, one thing, just in 2 colours.
I got this idea from the now crappy looking Jam Factory when it was still a fantastic looking cinema. These are my new door pulls. I think i'll stick with the gold. They are cast in solid aluminum. They weigh a fair bit considering.
