Ok. Been working on the basement and I put one of the old tv's down there to watch while I build "more of listen but whatver". The first thing the wife said was she was worried about sound with the main area being under our bedroom.. Right now I have no ceiling up. just the joice and lights. I"m NOT plannng to insulate the ceiling "everything I"ve read said it's a waste of money. I'm doing a 2'' drop with the furing stips going oposite of the joice and as of now i'm planning on one layer of 5/8 drywall "might do two layers of 1/2 depends on cash" I've read up on all the sound proofing stuff so that's not my question. My question is how much of the sound will be stopped by the ceiling? thanks.

10 views and nothing? I'm just tring to get a idea of what to expect after drywall... what was the difference for you guys?

no insulation, rigid connection of a 5/8 layer of drywall to the ceiling joists above using furring.

If you can hear an old TV now, if you are planning any kind of a sound system it will rock the bedroom above. You can save your money on a sub-woofer.

would you suggest insulation? Everything I've read says it'll not help at all? I'd rather do it now than later...

Just so things are clear. I'm only looking to put a big stop the the regular sound... tv..voices and whatnot. I can turn a sub off if needed. My goal is to be able to watch tv and play a video game without keeping the world up.

I'm reading all over the place and I'm tring to get a good answer.. I've only put a few of the furring strips in, i'm gonna pull them out and put padded tape where they touch the joice. I know it's not the same as the metal channels but I think it'll help.

Now the question is. Will I be better off with insulation or double drywall....I think I can afford to do one or the other...

According to this source insulation will actually probably hurt your sound "proofing" efforts as it fills the air void that helps to reduce the sound. From your posts, it sounds like you are not trying to create a sound proof vault, but I don't know how much double drywall in the ceiling will help if nothing is done to diminish sound from the vents or walls that are tied to the room above.

I personally stuffed my ceiling joists with R-19 and did nothing with the HVAC or walls. I used 5/8 and I have hard wood floors above...it did little to subdue the sound of my 2 year old running across the hard wood floors from below, but I do think it did help with reducing the general talking and TV noise from above. My space is not finished and only drywalled, so it is hard to tell what the end affect will be, especially once I get carpet and other treatments within the basement space which could help with sound traveling to the upstairs.

another good source which should help: http://www.soundproofingcompany.com/library/articles/neighbor_noise_ceilings/

Thank you for a responce. That was alot of my worry about the insulation. I was worried about the vent. I only have one to worry about. My main goal is to keep the sound in the basement. I'm not all that worried about hearing people walk around and stuff. My main goal is to be able to watch tv and play games while my wife sleeps.
