My family is in Canada and they just updated to the Pace DVR so they had an extra DCH3416 (they bought them), which is the same DVR I have at home (UP Mi - Charter Cable land). I just bought a new plasma and I am already renting the DCH3416 for upstairs, so I thought I could use this in the basement. When I plugged it in, it wouldn't work (just 0 on the screen and I can't change the channels - can't even get a menu). So I had Charter come to look at it (I was under the impression it would need a new cablecard - I don't know much about this - just internet research).
The service guys told me it doesn't need a cablecard, but instead it needs to be brought into the shop for a "burn" which I am assuming it is a s/w f/w update. Does this sound legit? The last thing I want them to do is confiscate this thing and open up a can of worms. If you know they won't service/set it up for me, I may just send it back to Canada for my other family members to use.
Thanks for your help.

No US cableco will activate a box they didn't rent to you.
Send it back to Canada.
Thanks for the response. I have to say that caught me a bit off guard. I was under the impression that they had too...kind of sounds like a monopoly

It's not available via retail channels to end users - even in Canada, when they *were* being sold to end users, it wasn't Moto doing the selling, and the cable operators that did sell them were selling them *specifically* for use with their own cable systems. So no, no one else is required to touch them.

Greetings all,
i have a dch 3416 that is from the cable company, i have multiple recordings on the unit i want to get off.
That is, transfer/record to dvd.
Best buy said this, radio shack said that and none of it worked !!
What do i need to get my programs off the dch 3416 unit ?
Cables ??
Video capture card ??
I have tried to connect a usb to my laptop from the dch 3416 and it wasn't recognized .
If i hook up the dch 3416 to a regular tv not an hdtv will it show my programs from the dch 3416 that are in hd ?
Thus record to dvd ????
