View Full Version : Have Comcast - Tivo-HD. Considering U-Verse... Mistake?
shane55 10-22-09, 01:30 PM I have Comcast cable and the Tivo Series 2-HD with and external 500GB drive. I have ATT-DSL internet.
Comcast service/image quality is OK, but I will same some money and gain a bit of convenience (and supposedly get much faster internet) by switching to U-Verse.
1) Image quality. Any side by side comparisons done between U-Verse and Comcast Cable?
With the 60" Kuro this has become pretty important.
2) DVR functionality. Anyone with U-verse or Tivo S2 compare it to the other?
(Should I just stick with Comcast and get a Moxi?)
If this has been asked before... please point me to that thread.:o
Thanks
shane
mjones73 10-22-09, 04:34 PM You may want to check the local HD Info section for a thread for your area to see if anyone else has compared the two. The problem with comparing against cable is the PQ can vary from area to area depending on how the local network is laid out.

U-verse has multiroom DVR, but only 2 HD streams at a time in your entire residence. For SD, U-verse is pretty good.
If you stick with Comcast, either the Moxi or TiVo HD are better alternatives than the standard HD DVR.
shane55 10-23-09, 01:45 AM Thanks for the replies.
I hadn't really thought about Comcast PQ being different in various areas, but I guess it makes sense.
Yes, I had the Comcast Moto boxes for too long. They are junk.
cheers

brinyhenry 10-24-09, 12:23 PM I've had Comcast HD for over 5 years and just recently switched to Uverse. At least in my situation I find the picture quality overall to be a substantial improvement. Plus when you consider that you also get every premium channel in HD (including the full suite e.g. HBO Comedy, HBO Signature etc). My HD channels have quadrupled with UVerse. It's still a relatively new format and still has it's bugs like the occasional Dolby Digital dropouts, but Comcast also had it's bugs too.

Shelby Township area.
I have Comcast cable and the Tivo Series 2-HD with and external 500GB drive. I have ATT-DSL internet.Do you have a Tivo Series2...or a TivoHD/Series3 with CableCards? There's no such thing as a Tivo Series2 HD. None of the Series2 boxes support cable HD or external hard drives.
Comcast service/image quality is OK, but I will same some money and gain a bit of convenience (and supposedly get much faster internet) by switching to U-Verse.With U-verse, you'll get better SD picture quality on some channels, but noticeably worse HD quality compared to most Comcast systems. They take the 12-19Mbps MPEG-2 HD feeds and recompress them into MPEG-4 @ 5-6Mbps, resulting in a softer image. The larger the screen, the worse U-Verse looks by comparison.
U-Verse does offer far more HD channels than some Comcast systems, and Uverse's HD channels will look a good deal better than the SD equivalents on Comcast.
2) DVR functionality. Anyone with U-verse or Tivo S2 compare it to the other?
(Should I just stick with Comcast and get a Moxi?)If you already have a TivoHD, what would be the point of a Moxi?
The CableCard Moxi offers a HD EPG, a longer liveTV buffer, and better liveTV filters, but it also sacrifices other DVR features and won't give you a better picture. Picture quality would be the same. Feature comparison here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=17063966&postcount=2).
Compared to most cable DVRs, the U-Verse DVR is pretty good, but it doesn't rival the TivoHD or Moxi. If you're willing to settle for U-Verse's reduced HD PQ quality, then you might take a look at Dish Network. Dish Network offers comparable HD quality to U-Verse, but with a far superior DVR (best you can get outside a TiVo).

Michigan, I assume?

I think the performance level with Uverse depends how close you are to their box. In my case the installer said I was getting a signal strength inside my place almost identical to what was at the box. Which coincidentally is attached to my building :)
I think the performance level with Uverse depends how close you are to their box.No, that's incorrect.
It does affect other U-verse performance, but not image quality.
What HDTV are you using?

You are correct sir. lol
I will admit that I did see some of the black crush issues initially, but that seemed to resolve itself within the first couple of days. It's not like I wasn't having some of those issues with Comcast either. With Comcast I couldn't even use my 1:1 mode. About a year ago they did some update on my box and ever since I had this veritcal bright green line on the right side of the screen when in 1:1 pixel mapping mode on my television. I was able to adjust my display horizontally to crop it off but it would leave some pillarboxing on the left side. Their lack of HD channels was also an issue for me as well.

I have the Philips 47" version of the 7432 series. I realize this isn't the top of line LCD out there, but it did get pretty decent reviews and I've been very happy with it.
I'm very picky about picture quality as well. I use an Oppo 983 for my DVD library, a Toshiba XA2 for HD DVD, and a PS3 for BluRay. I've been spoiled by reference image quality so I have a decent standard to compare to. Is Uverse as good as BluRay, no, but I think it does get closer than my Comcast service ever did.

Sounds like Comcast is sub-standard in your area, which can happen. The analog elimination for your area is scheduled sometime in 2010, it would be interesting to see what it looks like then.
go_broncos 10-26-09, 08:49 PM I made the switch last month in chicago from comcast. I have a 64" rear projection and 100" front projector and am particular about quality. SD is better. HD is not and it isn't that close. football and other action sports (like WWE) are bad. Lots of pixelations and blurryness during the movement. I've had them come out and my signal is as good as it will get. If I watch it using component cables instead of HDMI, it does improve that. As for the rest of the stuff with hi def, its tollerable. comcast was so much sharper, at&T is soft.
So why am I keeping it? Love the whole house DVR. Get to switch from one room to another and keep on watching (so big for the wife to be able to watch oprah and crap upstairs). They only part that is really bugging me now is football (1080i on CBS is worse than 720p on fox & espn and my TV's are 1080i.
If someone else comes up with whole house, I'll switch. Until then, at least for this TV season, I'll live with it.

bfdtv...
Yeah, I know it's been months. Got busy. ;)
Looks like I won't be switching to u-verse. There is NO WAY I would want to lower my HD PQ. My luck, it would go down substantially and noticeably.
Having recently purchased the 60" Kuro and had it calibrated, the last thing I want is to take that chance.
Yes, it's a Series 3 Tivo. Just a typo, thanks for pointing it out.
Thanks to all for your input.
