View Full Version : Looking for Netflix supported device plus ability to play files from hard drive

I am looking for official netflix supported device (not Play on) plus the ability to play ripped dvds - mostly .avi or mpeg.

I know there is Xbox (but annoying $50 per year gold membership required).

Roku does netflix streaming but does not play files from your library.

I am looing for something easy as a gift for parents for holidays - easy to turn on and easy UI controlled with a remote (I am thinking nettop or HTPC will be to complicated for them).

If nothing out there now, has anyone heard about anything coming out in the future?

Thanks.

How about a Blu-Ray player to boot? I recommend the LG BD-390.

man - I think you hit that right on the nail - intergrated wifi to boot - that was my other problem - I know they have a router but was thinking about the nightmare of them wiring ethernet and me directing them over the phone (they are old retired in florida while I am in NY).

sweet price also - $230 on amazon - thats what i paid for my popcorn hour a-110 less than a year ago!

couple that with a 1 year gift subscription with blu-ray from netflix, and I think that will be a perfect gift

What about WDTV live plus playon? Well, you need a PC to stream the playon from.

$120 WDTV + $40 playon (could be less with coupons)

or even cheaper with ASUS O!play or cinematube

I think he already said not Playon. Besides Playon doesn't have HD streams for Netflix. With the BD-390, you can now do Vudu as well. I can't believe how cheap it is now when it was selling for $350 only 3 months ago. Odd because now it has more features, with the last 2 firmware updates added CIFS/SMB and Vudu. Kudos to LG for such a fine product.

What support does the LG have for external video files? I have a DNS-321 loaded up with DVD iso and divx files. How user friendly is the navigation, this would be "upgrading" a xbox with XBMC?

Doesn't support ISO but yes on DIVX and MKV. File share navigation is a simple side scroller, no preview pane. The GUI is no XMBC but serviceable.

I've been seriously thinking - between waiting for the Dune Prime 3.0 and the LG BD 390.

The Dune is perfect - one little box with everything in it, but a huge downer is the price ($450 at Digital Connection) when i last checked. I'm not ready to pay anything more than $350 for it (the price of a good blu ray player and a good $100 media player).

And I dont want to get the LG right now because of whats visible on the horizon...oh well. The LG does most things the Dune can without the extensive format support. If you dont mind using Tversity to stream, then the LG is a good choice.

Uh no, the LG BD390 supports CIFS/SMB so you do not need Tversity. No transcoding needed for MKV either as it is supported. It can play anything I can throw at it expect ISOs.

I would say the real weaknesses are a pathetic wireless signal and a simple GUI for streaming media files. It is a Blu-ray player first after all, and a pretty good one at that.

btw does it transcode true hd or dts hd master with mkv while streaming or from usb?

I was not aware that the BD390 could play everything. What formats does it support? Wouldn't i need something to transcode unsupported formats?

I see that SMB was added recently, my bad.

Wish I could tell you. I don't have a HD sound system.

Formats supported are in link below. I suppose you can use either Tversity or whatever else to do transcoding of an unsupported format. I have yet to run into one.

Yep, SMB was added a few months back. The latest update added Vudu services.

Yes, some people have PlayOn running for Hulu but the BD390 has native support for Netflix which can play HD streams that PlayOn cannot.

I am looking for official netflix supported device (not Play on) plus the ability to play ripped dvds - mostly .avi or mpeg.I was looking for essentially the same thing. If the Netflix/PS3 partnership being reported on today is confirmed, then I'm getting a PS3Slim for my birthday. Netflix instant queue, local files over the PS3 media server, a Blu-Ray player and Little Big Planet.

I searched in the internet about more details on the supposedly BD-Live app for netflix for PS3. What prevents this disk to be used for any BD-Live enabled standalone blu-ray player to stream netflix, provided it has ethernet/wi-fi and the required BD-Live spec. I don't see this part in any of the announcement. afterall BD-Live is just a spec and I doubt if the spec allows HDD access if the netflix streaming needs HDD access. In that case there need to be a special BD-Live spec only for PS3. I am pretty sure netflix have thought about it and may try to extend the BD-Live disc to have support for any BD-Live enabled player. Any comments..

While I do like upnp streaming on the PS3 using the PS3 Media Server app that supports thumbnails and multiple transcode options, it still falls flat because of no support for mkv, CIFS/SMB, and NTFS usb drives. The partnership with Netflix is long overdue but I got to say, great gaming machine though and the blu-ray playback is not too shabby.

I agree with the top creator - Netflix Plus streaming from my library without a 3rd party solution would be awesome. Add in a QAM turner (or the ability to read me hdhomerun) , and it would be absolutely perfect.

I have two xbox 360's hooked up to my gigabit home network. IMHO at best, the playback is OK, at worst unacceptable. For all the negative crowing people are doing in regards to the o!play (which I have), I think it SMOKES the 360 in for HD content playback.

So can you confirm if it will stream BD ripts (TS or M2TS) across SMB or UPNP and if yes does it either bit stream or decode HD like TrueHD and DTS-MA on streaming TS files....

if so, I can say buh bye to my PS3, my roku and the popcorn hour which would be great!

Again, wish I could tell you. The player is a gift to my parents and it is strictly a bedroom setup so TV stereo sound only. I have not tried any TS or M2TS files but BDrips to MKV work just fine.

Can someone with a BD390/BD370 confirm or deny support for various subtitle formats - SRT, SSA, SUB/IDX, both external and contained in MKV? Is there any difference between the 390 and 370 besides wifi and about $100 in price?

I end up being the "technology consultant" for my friends and family. Several are asking about options for varying combination of blu-ray, netflix and downloaded video playback. I cannot in good conscience recommend the PS3, due to poor codec/container support. Since the BD390 handles all the popular audio and video formats, I just need to make sure it can process subtitles as well before I make my official proclamation. :D

Both external and internal subs are supported, although I have only used SRT and SUB/IDX.
