the box is quite expenisve but i saw a second hand one for 30 pounds also would need to get a hdmi splitter but would this work and would i get a picture on the recorder because of the hdcp

There's no need to bother with HDMI -> component conversion. That won't yield a better picture than component output direct from the Xbox360.

the tv picure wouldnt be effected as its split with the hdmi splitter the need for the converstion is so that i can plug it into the hd pvr recorder device
