I am in the market to buy an HD Scaler for my PS3. The PS3 does not have (or does not use) a hardware scaler. My tv only displays 1080i, not 720p. The games look like crap. I've done the comparison with the same games running at the same time in the same place with my Xbox 360, which does have a hardware scaler. It is a very big difference. It's quite disgusting, actually.
Is the Faroudja DCDi Edge technology found in receivers worth it? Is there a better one found in receivers?
Is the Atlona HD560 worth it?
I don't want mediocre scaling. I want it to look as 1:1 as possible. The scaler in the Xbox 360 is very good. How much do I have to pay, or which scaler do you guys know of that can match the Xbox 360s scaler?
Hint: Anything more than $500 for a box and not a receiver, and I'd rather buy a 720p tv.
Check the video processors section. Last time I looked they were pretty expensive but that was a long time ago.
The difference should not be that great. Sounds like you have another problem. How are the two devices connected to the HDTV?

I am connecting a PS3 to my HDTV using an HDMI cable.
My problem is shared by millions others. Yes, millions. The PS3 has sold about 25 million units. According to the Playstation forum, a poll was done on this forum (AVS) and they estimate 40% of people have this problem. How many tvs out there only support 1080i/p, and have to scale 720p?
I would post a link but the forum doesn't let me yet.
It is not a setting or a misconnection.
Should I take this to video processing?

All current generation technical technology HDTVs that I am aware support inputs of 720p, 1080i, and many of them also now support 1080p over DVI/HDMI
What is the make/modlel of your TV. I will try and find it's user manual which may provide some ideas.

Allow me to explain my problem again. It's simple, I just may have not explained it very well.
The TV I own is the Sony KD-30XS955. It's native resolution is 1080i. It supports 720p signals, however the TV upscales it to its resolution of 1080i.
I am connecting a PS3 to it via HDMI.
Most PS3 games run at 720p. However, the PS3 does not have a built-in hardware scaler. It makes the TV, or the software attempt to scale. This results in a blurry, soft image, and a noticeable amount of image quality is lost.
To me, and probably many here, this is not acceptable. I didn't buy this TV and this video game console, and everything else that goes with it to look at a non 1:1, or non-scaled image. I could let it do 480p, but again, that's not the point here.

So your game is in 720p, your PS3 is outputting 720p and your TV is up-converting it to 1080i where the Xbox can scale to 1080i internally? If that's the case then the bottom line is your TV's scaler is doing a bad job of converting 720p to 1080i for display so yeah an external scaler may help.
Video Processing would be the better place to ask this as suggested.

You only get true 1:1 pixel mapping when the frame resolution you send to a display is the same as its native resoluiton and there is no overscan occuring. Just getting the appearace of 1:1 pixel mapping through scaling will never have the same video quality.
Therefore only games that can run at 1080i or 1080p will have true mapping when output at 1080i to the TV.

Are you absolutely sure you're feeding it 720p? Does the set tell you that its 720p? Are you direct connected to the set or do you have a switch or A/V rcvr in the mix?
I've had a KV34HS510, a few years older but essentially the same as yours, for many years and 720p inputs look very good.
