When is netflix going to send 5.1?

When is netflix going to integrate into the xmb?

Anyone?

I think someone mentioned their contract with MS will be up later this year.

I just signed up for the free trial a few days ago as well and i can add to my instant queue on my computer and ps3. There is also a search function on the ps3. when it loads up the instant queue screen just tab to the left and there it is. So far netflix is making me as giddy as a little girl. It's pretty convenient.

You're fortunate - I still only have the Search function on the PS3, and the Instant Queue functionality is on neither. Netflix customer service on 2 different calls tells me that the Instant Queue is no longer supported on their servers. Oh well.

They must have changed the software on the CD. I received mine in February and have the Instant Queue but no Search function.

On another note, has anyone seen a program in the Instant Queue disappear? I had one (Have Gun, Will Travel) in my queue and had watched 8 episodes. When I tried to watch Episode 9, it played about a minute of the opening credits, then locked up. I tried to play it a few more times, with the same result.

Then I tried playing Episode 10 and Episode 11. Neither would play - the screen just showed the loading status bar partly full and hung again. I had to cycle the power to get back to the main screen.

My guess is that the show is no longer available...

so from what I'm reading im the only one with a search and instant queue? I wish i could help you guys figure out why mine works and ya'lls doesn't. My instant queue on the ps3 is the first thing that pops up when i start it up. it even still shows the movies i already watched including the ones i havent on the list. My search function is ever present also. If ya'll need me to check setting or disc type just tell me what to look for and i'll report back. I got my disc the first week of march a couple days after i signed up for the free trial.

I was just glad they finally got Netflix on Play Station. That took forever. Picture quality is generally good, except now my only problem is I wish I could watch the movies in their native resolution, rather than the weird stretch mode (which cannot be defeated).

my wife read the books but i couldnt get past the first line, the author wrote "it was an odd looking vine.". i end up listening to the back seat comments of;

that didnt happen, it doesnt work that way, that hasnt happened yet, etc.

but the series is very enjoyable. I agree that it looks decent on netflix stream.

I was just watching some pre-season baseball and notice that this show had came on before one pre-season game and right after another game ended in the guide line up which would have made it back to back for those who are a fan of the show. I never heard of it, thought it was a "filler" show. Something they throw in there just to keep the channel running you know

just signed up for the free trial and got the disc today... can someone just give me a rough rundown.
1. so i just have the one movie option (8.99), so if i have a disc at my house, can i stream or do i have to wait until i send my disc back?
2. whenever i am done watching a streaming movie, can i just start another one right up?
3. what does it play in? (720P, 1080P)?
4. anything else i need to know?

1. you can stream now even if you're at your limit of # of discs at home.
2. yes
3. i don't think they're streaming at 1080p, but i'm sure someone will chime in. quality is auto-detected by the netflix player based on your connection speed. you can't do anything on your end to affect this beyond making sure you're getting max bandwidth from your network so don't have other things sucking bandwidth.
4. wired connection will probably give you a slightly better detected speed and better quality maybe. you add to your watch instantly queue on your computer, not the PS3. it's browse only on the PS3.

Alright, wondering if any of you can please help with this very annoying new problem I'm having.

For the first few months, everything worked great with streaming Netflix via my PS3. Now, I can't get anything to work, and I'm thinking it's a problem with the PS3's wireless.

9/10 times, when I insert the Netflix disc, it brings up a screen that says "no connection" and give me the option to "exit" or "try again." It also recommends ejecting the disc and reinserting (almost never works).

Then if it DOES actually bring up my queue, it frequently takes forever to load the images/titles (just shows blank slots). Sometimes it won't even display my entire instant queue, only part of it. And then, of course, it won't play anything after that. It just sits there with the "time wheel" spinning until a point at which it just spontaneously starts the entire disc over from the beginning (i.e. the red Netflix screen, etc.).

When I got to the PS3 > Network Options > Test Connection, it will give me varied results. Sometimes it fails just checking the connection to my wireless network, other times it stops/fails at any number of steps in between.

I'd had some luck testing the connection before, and then everything would work after a successful test. Not anymore.

I also run Media Link (Nullsoft) to my PS3 and that POS cuts in and out spontaneously all the time, which makes me think it's just poor handling of the wireless signal with the PS3.

It's also not a bandwidth cap issue, because I can go upstairs and watch anything with no issues at all on my computer (Mac).

So... any advice? I'm going to look into getting another damn router downstairs and just hard-wiring my connection in.

That right there...do it. I'd be willing to bet most of your issues will disappear. Always choose wired over wireless when you can.

Other people in this thread have commented about making sure there are no torrents running in your house.

as a background I have a really really slow DSL service. I would use the PS3 netflix disc (wired connection) and there would be 5 minutes of loading for 10 minutes of content.... mid epsiode it would break for loading..... so I was not happy with the PS3 version of netflix.

Just because it was free I requested a netflix disc for the Wii... I fired it up this weekend and for me the picture quality was on par with the ps3 version (again my terrible internet limits the picture quality I can get). The biggest surprise was I wasn't subjected to multiple loading screens. It loaded content at the beginning and played it all the way through... I may give the PS3 disc a try again just to see if perhaps it too has improved.... I'm also thinking it could be a function of not very many Netflix users have the Wii streaming discs yet, so perhaps their servers aren't as busy as the PS3 servers.... but that's a guess. So there's my preliminary 2 cents :D

I have a hard wired connection via Verizon Fios to the PS3 and Netflix works well.

I tried the service for a month, then put it on hold.

The on demand movie selection is very poor IMO.

Lots of older movies and B movies, but not many new releases. It's a shame because it's a great idea and works well. If they improve the content offering I'll sign back up.

Wonderful. Apparently, given my current layout at my house, hardwiring it will NOT be an option, at all.

So that said, any advice on troubleshooting/improving my wireless connection? I just don't get how it worked FINE for so many months, and now it never works, at all.

So pissed...

benjamin-benjami your internet connection speed may limit what Netflix can do. Mine is a weird number - 640 Kbps up and 3072 Kbps down, but it works good with Netflix. There's very little waiting time and the resolution is fairly good.

I think I used to have 1024 Kbps up and 1024 Kbps down. There was more waiting time to get started, sometimes five minutes or more and the picture was often poor. (And that was on my computer, Netflix has only been on PS3 for the last several months.)

But I have a 1080p Benq monitor on my computer and 8800XT video card. I'm not sure if the difference is because of my connection or because Netflix has gotten better, but probably both. And it seems like a slower connection would make seek not work as well. It sounds like other people have the same experience.

You probably have a lot more choices where you are. My internet costs $30/month from Qwest.

Anybody heard a date for the diskless update yet? There was an update last week, but it didn't do anything different that I can detect.

joeypants: I would try port forwarding your PS3 in your router. Port forwarding the PS3 (or any internet device) can work wonders with your connection.

May seem a bit technical at first (if you're not a bit tech savy) but here is a site with tutorials and stuff. http://portforward.com/

jamieva's comment is actually not unwarranted.

Sony sent out a survey last year I think asking PS3 owners about what they'd want in a paid support service (now called Playstation Plus). There were maybe 20 feature options divided into several plans that cost as much as $70 a year, and gamers were asked to vote on the plans they liked more than the others. One of the features listed in a few of the plans was disc-less Netflix.

This doesn't mean that it WILL be attached to PS+, but it might. Some of the options on that survey list ultimately were given to us for free, but if they do attach disc-less Netflix to PS+ (most comments were against that option if I recall, just like attaching cross talk to PS+), free users would still need the disc to use it on the PS3.

TornadoTJ
07-22-10, 10:59 AM
I took that survey. My guess was that they were trying to find a way around the exclusive contract with Microsoft. I figured if they charged for Netflix, they'd get around it all by saying it's only available as part of a paid service. Now that this is expiring, I'm again guessing that Sony will be excited to roll this out for free on all PS3's. It'll be a good selling point.

joeblow
07-22-10, 12:22 PM
You may be right. The more I think about it, I don't see an easy way for them to force PS+ as a requirement for disc-less Netflix.

The recent news is that Netflix said that the disc is gone once they do a software update. However, if the disc is gone, then how would non PS+ members who own a PS3 and currently enjoy watching Netflix get to use the service if it was exclusive to the PS+ alone? That would cause a serious PR nightmare that is not worth dealing with if they can avoid it.

TornadoTJ
07-22-10, 01:51 PM
I'd say that right there pretty much nails it that discless Netflix isn't going to require PSN+. I can't imagine them limiting ANY Netflix to plus members only.

Search has apparently been added:

http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/26/ps3-netflix-adds-search-option/

Netflix just became a lot easier to use on the PS3. No, you still need a disc (for now), but the application has been stealthily upgraded with the ability to search for and watch videos from the entire Instant library. For example, typing the letter "A" quickly revealed Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Unfortunately, the Xbox Live and Wii versions of Netflix don't appear to have been updated with this feature yet. Xbox owners will have to wait until November.

Great. Next question, from Justin Patterson at Morgan Keegan. You mentioned a new PlayStation user interface coming this
Fall. Will that require access to the premium PlayStation Plus subscription service? Should we think about a new user interface

Reed Hastings - Netflix - Founder, Chairman, CEO
On the PS3, we'll have more to say about that when we roll it out, and that will be before the -- or we expect it to be before the

Since 99% of my watching is either movies (and I don't care if they are old or good) or documentaries, I am one of the evidently few that thinks the selection on Netflix is very good. My wife and I watch a lot of documentaries through the On Demand. We recently finished the Terry Jones series on misconceptions of the Dark Ages. The "Almost the Truth" Monty Python 6 part documentary is astoundingly good, too.

The Brooklyn Bridge by Ken Burns is another winner. In fact, they have quite a few of the Ken Burns series available on demand.

There are also a lot of great music documentaries. The one about Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention is really interesting, even if the audio is mildly out of sink. Heavy Metal in Baghdad is another winner.

I didn't see anyone else post this yet.

Netflix is working on a streaming service for Sony's PlayStation 3, similar to that of the Xbox 360, that won't require a disc, CEO Reed Hastings said in a statement (PDF) to investors Wednesday.
According to Hastings, Netflix will "be launching a major new version of our Sony PS3 user interface which doesn't require a disc, and is dynamically updated continuously with the latest Netflix UI improvements." Hastings didn't provide many details on the service, which will launch at some point before the company's next earnings call in October, but it sounds like it will work similarly to Netflix on the Xbox 360. Rather than insert a disc, users need only to go to the Netflix service, sift through content, and play a movie or television show.

The Netflix update still on track (http://www.examiner.com/video-games-in-canada/sony-canada-unveils-netflix-for-ps3)for an October U.S. release, but disc-less streaming now works in Canada:

Over at the official Playstation blog, Ashley Beaulac, the PR representative for Sony Canada has announced that as of today, Netflix will be incorporated into Canadian PS3s. While the USA already has Netflix functionality, the Canadian version will NOT require an official Netflix disc be inserted into the PS3 and is true video streaming like the equivalent Xbox 360 service in the USA. Canada enjoys this more convenient functionality on their PS3s one month before their American counterparts, who are still set to get a "disc-less" service sometime next month.

Will try it tonight and get back to you with results.

Hopefully the movie list will not be limited.

The movie selection is definitely limited though there is a fairly wide swath of content genre wise. What is available is pretty nonsensical, no pattern I could see.

So far I have encountered some glitchy behaviour with the client (cache issues of some sort I think) where tiles from one selection would end up overtop of another. I also encounter a case where the ratings stars got out of alignment. Streaming itself however has been flawless over the couple of things I have watched so far (Joe Rogan standup plus an episode of Blood+). On the downside, english dubs on foreign content sucks beyond all belief (Anime with poor flowing English voice work is especially obnoxious).

Hopefully the service does not stay stagnant as the core is pretty cool.

Cheers

The only pattern I've seen is they seem to flow along the lines of STARS' on demand movie selection.

There is no PSN app on the store outside of Canada for Netflix. We get the file(s) next month.

Actually I found it, it's automatically in the xmb video section for us Canadians...

however, tons of crap movies/shows... gotta love Canadian content laws... guess I have to keep up the usual ways of watching things...

Dunno, "Mad Men" so far seems like a great series and pretty decent quality for a streaming title.

I have however had one lockup so far in the player but on the plus side, the player remembers where you last were in the video so it was possible to resume without having to scroll around. On that note, the fast foward / rewind function of the player is great, includes thumbnails and at least so far is very responsive.

Sorry if this is old hat for you Yanks but this is all new to us Canucks.

Cheers

Based on the web interface my guess is that they have a minimum of 1620 movies plus about 380 TV shows (some one offs, some a full season of episodes). This is based on looking at the "New Arrivals" and counting pages of results as well as the "Television" genre. There may be more movies but it is hard to tell as there is no way that I am aware of to "browse all".

Their press release just says "thousands of movies and TV episodes" so it is hard to guess what the actual total is.

http://netflix.mediaroom.com/index.php?s=43&item=368

One thing is that the browsing interface on the PS3's has a truncated category list which makes it such that some material can only be found by searching (and this is not consistent). For example, I watched a Joe Rogan video shortly after getting Netflix installed. The next day however when I went to the standup section, Joe Rogan was not listed anymore. I could search for him but it was not possible to get to this via the category list.

Considering what $8 get you at the video store + the convenience factor, so far I think Netflix.ca is solid value.

Cheers

Nothing to do with CANCON, mostly to do with Distribution Licensing.. Since Bell and Rogers subsiduaries pretty much own all media distribution in Canada, and have their own Broadband On Demand offerings... they are going to keep their licensing close....

I did note that each movie is about 2 GB.. might be time for me to start looking at something other than Rogers .. i love the speed, but 175 gb isn't going to allow much in terms of movie watching.

30 day trial, but needs to be secured with a credit card, auto billoning after the trial.

"i love the speed, but 175 gb isn't going to allow much in terms of movie watching."

You'd be surprised. My girl and I watch TV exclusively through Netflix streaming and Hulu Plus, plus quite a few movies. On average we go through about 70 streamed titles a month, we also average about 130GB of use a month, and I'm big on buying as many of my games as possible as digital deliveries. I can think of one month in the last three years that I have been monitoring bandwidth usage at my router that I passed 175GB at 195GB, and that was a month that my girl grabbed 7 seasons of some show off a torrent. :)

In other words, get a router that lets you install Tomato/DD-WRT for bandwidth monitoring, and just keep a casual eye on your usage. I figure by about the time that I would start bumping up against the 250GB Comcast limit, should be about the time that that limit moves to 500GB.

There is a Netflix Instant Watch app coming to the PS3 (USA) next Monday. This will allow you to watch Netflix Instant Watch without a disc. Sony also is the first to offer 5.1 Surround Sound by Dolby Digital. Some titles will offer 1080i and/or subtitle support.

This is a great step forward for Sony and all of us that own a PS3 and Netflix account. I know it's just a small step to put in the disc, but now I can just get to the couch, hit the PS3 button on the remote and get right into Netflix :D
