View Full Version : Whose Lighting Up a BIG Screen & What are you USING?

I would like to know what projector people are using a PJ with a screen 120" or larger with a 1.0 gain or less. My last post seems to have fallen on deaf ears.

Yes the JVS DLA - RS35/25 are no brainers, but other than that what is available? I need to achieve 12 ftL or more, from 20' away - and have decent color accuracy. Right now I'm using an Optoma HD-81, but I've sworn off ever buying another Optoma product.

Under $4,500 would be great!

Thanks in advance.

The Planar PD8150 sounds perfect for your specs (although it costs slightly more): http://www.projectorcentral.com/Planar-PD8150-projection-calculator-pro.htm

I'd be interested in this too as I'm planning on doing a 110" AT screen with a 1.1gain and would actually like to maybe go 120" but I worry that I won't have enough lumens once the lamp has degraded over time.

My 8150 lights my 110" wide (scope) SMX screen just fine in low lamp with BC disabled. It's plenty bright to maybe verging on too bright sometimes with a new lamp.

Really 120" isn't all that "big" really, that's still pretty easy to light. It's about 35 sqft CIH, or about 43 sqft 16:9, ends up needing about 700 lumens for 16ftL a 1.0 gain, 500 for 12ftL. It's when you start getting much bigger that it gets "fun" :D

I'm using an RS20 on a 54.375" X 130" Centerstage XD screen. 16X9 size is just over 110" diagonal. Good enough for me but I do pull down a highpower in front of it for gaming (using Astro headset). I'm thinking about getting a light canon just for gaming and firing onto the AT screen as I like brighter for my gaming.

Do you know how many lumens it puts out in best mode (BC off)? I'm looking at lighting up a 120" wide from 20'-21' back.

SimpleTheater: Keep the InFocus SP8602 on your short list. Hopefully we'll know more about it soon...

Infocus 777, 1250 lamp hrs, on low lamp.
140" wide, 2.35 AR (152" diagonal)
Screen: WilsonArt Designer white (1.24 gain as per some measurements here)
Room is not a bat cave, yet pj is very bright.

Now, I know you won't go out and buy 777, but the point is that InFocus projectors are plenty bright and still very much close to D65. Some other projectors are bright but have their whites tweaked. I would look out for that new SP8602.

No clue (you could check Cine4Home maybe). I've never got out my meter for it, it's supposed to be right on (factory calibrated) and I don't want to find out that I 'shouldn't' be happy with it

I just replied with a realistic target light output level in the other thread. I am going to combine the threads.

Using 126" Carada Screen using BW material paired with JVC RS10 and have excellent results.

Don't forget throw distance! My RS1 needed a higher gain than 1.0 screen for 120 inches, 16x9 using a 23-24 foot throw. Lumens were around 432 with my first bulb when it was new at this throw and only around 373 lumens with my second new bulb. I have a Draper M2500. Newer 1.7 gain formula. After 1000 hours on my first bulb I still had 294 lumens which gave me just under 12ft-L off my M2500. All low lamp setting by the way! I could still boost it back up by 20% if i wanted too use high lamp output.

I'm starting to get the feeling that I should just get a new bulb for my Optoma HD-81. I really wanted to upgrade, and except for some very expensive JVC's, the LCD projectors lose so much lumen output 20' from the screen, I should just be happy with what I've got.

Using a JVC RS1 on a 133" Da-Lite high power screen with the PJ placed about 17' away. Looks great :)

Well that does pose the question....what specifically are you looking to improve. We have established that there is little that is as bright (or brighter) than the Optoma, but what other parameters were you finding you need to be better?

Things I don't like about my Optoma are as follows (in this order):
1) Louder than a Harley Davidson.
2) About as reliable as a Harley Davidson (already my Optoma was in the shop under warranty - others posters have seen it just die on them)
3) Optoma Customer Service is horrible - which I, and others, have detailed on the HD-81 thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=628036).
4) Contrast is decent, but not nearly as good as the new PJ's being reviewed.

Well Optoma is known for their reliability problems and customer service, switching companies will obviously solve that.

Most of the newest stuff is quieter, and I agree most will have better contrast now. I don't remember if I asked, but have you seen any of the other technologies?

My first PJ was an Optoma H31, a terrific little PJ. It was a bit loud, but no louder than the Epson which replaced it. No problems whatsoever, and after I sold it I haven't heard of any problems from the new owner. Also, I've owned Harleys for the last 24 years, from Sportsters through FXRs, Dynas, and Softails, and I've never had any warranty work done on any of them! Maybe you should pick something else as an example of what doesn't work right... like the banking industry, insurance industry, etc.!

No, I have not. I'm going 100% by reviews. Have you seen the HD81 and have any comparison to the LCD PJ's.

Would the Epson 8500UB with 1600 lumens in dynamic mode look better than the HD81 with about 700 lumens? Any other comparisons would be appreciated.
