I used to have a link to this site where DVD players were judged on very specific criteria and done so using test equipment for testing.

The information was presented in a table so you could quickly see where the player passed or failed a test.

I can't think of the site name, but if anyone knows, please pass it along. I'm hoping that they now do the same for Blu-Ray players. I purchased a Panasonic S97 that is great! Their testing was spot on.
