I've tried to do some research on this site and others. I have straight cable, no cable box and just want to record shows to watch later and erase. It looks like the philips 3575 is about the best out there now for just basic recording. Are there other choices I should look at? Thanks

The Philips can't record in HD. That's part of the reason why it's so cheap.

Do you care about the ability to record actual HD? If so, see the table of HDTV recorders (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=17063966#post17063966).
