Trying to decide between more inches or newer technology. Anyone here have any thoughts? This is going into a great room with a lot of windows and will be mounted on the wall.

Sony - BRAVIA XBR 52" Class / 1080p / 240Hz / LCD HDTV
Model: KDL-52XBR9

or

Sony - BRAVIA / 55" Class / 1080p / 120Hz / LCD HDTV
Model: KDL-55V5100

Thanks!

My honest opinion: I would not spend my money on either.

Why?
(pulled from Cnet review)
XBR9
The bad:
Expensive; benefits of 240Hz difficult to discern; dejudder modes can produce artifacts; some screen uniformity and off-angle issues; dark areas tinged bluer; most free, streaming-video options not compelling.
5100
The bad:
Dark areas tinged bluish; must engage dejudder to enable antiblur; pedestrian design; less uniform screen.

Don't care how many windows or how much light you have, you are looking at panels that have subpar PQ -> more specifically one that produces artifacts and has issues with screen uniformity. But the main reasons are off angle viewing issues and bad blacks. What really kills it is that not only are you buying a display plagued with those problems, you are paying top dollar for it.

Even when they talk about the good; they use key words like "relatively" that lead me to believe they weren't really all that good.

For the money you are willing to spend, there are much better offerings

Looking at the xbr9 also.So what would you suggest in the 52 that does not have a glossy screen?i personally wanted the plasma 500m but reflection is an issue.

matte screen will hurt picture quality. will flatten out colors and hurt black levels. it will only subjectively help with reflections. They will still be apparant in a washed out blob on the screen compared to more defined reflections on a glossy screen. I have had both techs in a room with windows and actually found a glossy screen more to my liking. The reflections take up less screen area on a glossy screen. With the matte screen they seem to wash out almost the entire screen.

With my money, I would buy the best panel and address the light issues. Until you fix that, you won't be happy with any panel you buy

If you want a Sony lcd for sure, you probably should have posted on the lcd forum. Posting it on this forum is an open invitation to anyone with a grudge (against lcds as a whole) such as Zivman.

You want people who own Sony lcds to reply to your post, not plasma zealots. Please try again on the lcd forum and you might get some good answers. :)

I agree with mahler... Zivman's been coming on pretty strong lately, but what the hey...

If you not a purist but an average viewer, I would recommend the V5100. I like a nice picture, but I hate reflection even more. For my family room with windows I went LCD matte screen, and a plasma for my well-shaded bedroom. I have a 52" in the family room, and I would love to have a larger screen. I've never been able to detect any motion blur on my 2 LCDs, 60hz or 120hz... so I would not make a fuss over the 240hz tech.

Go bigger.

a grudge???? please.....

Everyone is free to spend their money as they choose, but why spend it on a subpar display? I thought I provided useful info for the OP. I posted useful info, 3rd party reviews, and a decent argument and you call it a grudge. How's the Kool Aid?

I never owned a 5100. The last sony display I owned was a KDS-60A2000; basically the last decent display sony produced. They haven't put out a flat panel worth buying yet. I have done a lot of viewing over the past 3-4 yrs of their flat panels. I have actually purchased 3 flat panels since then, Sony didn't even make the top 5 list of ones I considered

edit:
This is more telling of the quality of that display. These are the types of things the OP should be looking at when deciding how to spend his money:
LINK (http://www.televisioninfo.com/content/Sony-Bravia-KDL-52XBR9-LCD-HDTV-Review-1054/Viewing-Effects.htm)
We found that the KDL-52XBR9 had a slightly dissapointing viewing angle; we measured the angle at which the contrast ratio dropped by 50% to be about 22 degrees, for a total viewing angle of 44 degees. This is somewhat less than many other displays we've looked at; the Vizio VF550XVT, for instance had a total viewing angle to about 66 degrees

And the fact that on that same site's rating page, the XBR9 was bested by a crappy 760 series sammy plasma. LINK (http://www.televisioninfo.com/ratings.php). Not even a very good display in itself. Kind of a 3rd liner in the plasma world was better than it, that should give one some perspective.

Like I said, you are all free to spend and buy what you like, but at least be informed

well its no surprise that lcds with SPVA or AMVA have narrow viewing angle while vizio has some ips panel, which has poor contrast.

the ratings are not based on performance.

for 1700, I would have gotten a KRP-500M. It's a good thing you didn't buy the krp -> If you LOVE your 52xbr9 that much; you would have been so in LOVE with your krp that your HEAD WOULD HAVE EXPLODED

Also, a couple little sayings come to mind:
simple minds, simple pleasures

ignorance is bliss

I wouldn't be surprised if the next stop for Zivman's mania isn't the OLED thread...

Enjoy your new TV, and post on the appropriate owners thread... but that won't stop the instigator from posting over there though... :p ;)
