View Full Version : How to convincing someone to buy a Pioneer Plasma
ike2187 11-02-09, 08:12 PM I have a problem trying to convince my parents to buy a Pioneer KRP-500M which I can get for a really good price. Currently they have a Panny 54v10 on order (currently on back order) but it probably wont be in for another couple of weeks. I explained to them this is pretty much the best tv you could get for the price but they don't like the fact that Pioneer has stopped making plasma tvs. I tried to explain that Pioneer not making tvs anymore doesn't mean that they were bad and that they are the best tvs out there. So what else could I tell them since I really think they should get this tv while they can and for a good price too. Thanks
Kal Rubinson 11-02-09, 08:14 PM If they don't care, why make more of an effort than you have? Remember, if they ever have any dissatisfaction, valid or imagined, with the Pioneer, it will be YOUR FAULT.
Ian Faith 11-02-09, 08:14 PM Just leave them alone I say...I doubt your parents care enough to worry so much about.
Just let them get what they want and move on.
ike2187 11-02-09, 08:37 PM yea I guess it might not be worth it if something happens to it later on.... lol
dlplover 11-02-09, 08:38 PM If there's one thing I know about people is never try to tell people what they want. I'm guess your parents looked at the Panasonic in person and liked it. The KRP is a nice set, but the v10 isn't groundbreakingly worse. They're pretty close and they're both plasmas.
And as Kal said, if you tell someone to get something and they have trouble with it, a) they blame you and b) they expect you to constantly answer they're questions/fix anything with it.
wrinklefree 11-02-09, 08:38 PM The Panny V10 is no slouch either. ;)
SteveInAustin 11-02-09, 08:42 PM The real question is support. If the Panny breaks down, chances are good that there will be enough support from Panasonic to get troubleshooting info, or new parts, or even a newer model TV. If the Pioneer breaks down, however, there's a good chance of not having any of that support. Maybe not right now, but how about a few years down the road from now? Your parents are wise, because they've had this happen to them before and realize that technical specs are important but aren't all there is to care about when making a big purchase like this.
I'd also like to point out that the Panasonic has a larger screen (54" vs. 50"), has more HDMI ports (4 vs. 2) which is actually fairly important nowadays, has built-in tuner (the Pioneer one is just a monitor), has internet access for Youtube and such, and probably significantly less power consumption.
If you could get the Kuro for, say, $1200, though, I'd say do that instead. If it's in the $1500-$2000 ballpark, then you're starting to get into 50" Panasonic g10 or v10 territory, and I'd say the Panasonic wins. My opinion anyway.

ike2187 11-02-09, 08:43 PM well the thing is I was told by them to go out and find a tv for them. I found the v10 but then I found the pioneer which I think is a better deal but they wont budge.

Is the fact that Pioneer doesn't make em anymore the only reason they have? Or is it that the KRP is a pro monitor (not actually a TV) and they're also afraid of getting something geared more towards the enthusiasts?
But if they don't believe their own son, they probably won't believe a bunch of plasma enthusiasts on that internet thing.
How old are they? 38? 55? 82? In my circles, the older one is, the more likely they are to want something more simple and easy to set up and operate, preferably with a simple remote. I do find myself recommending a consumer model plasma to older folks and people that aren't tech savvy enough to incorporate a pro monitor into their setup.
ike2187 11-02-09, 08:46 PM I can get the Pioneer for about 1500 with the stand and the panny is a couple hundred more. The warranty shouldn't be a problem since you can get one through squaretrade for pretty cheap. Just the support could be a problem I guess.
ike2187 11-02-09, 08:51 PM They don't like it since Pioneer doesn't make Tvs anymore. And the no speaker/ tuner thing isn't a problem since there going to get a new home theater system anyways and also they have a cable box. Setup/tweaking shouldn't be a problem since my bro has a 5020 and he did all the usual stuff to it. Also there in there early 50s and they have been wanting a tv for quite some time. I might just have to let them sit on it and maybe they will come around.
vkarthik 11-02-09, 11:20 PM 54V10 is not a bad choice. They are rightly concerned. You don't know about their support plan after an year. They are going to focus on Car stereo. Lot of Pioneer engineers have moved over to Panny. Customer support for a product that they are not making anymore is always going to be poor.

Hey, I'm early 50s, and I got a Pioneer. :p
Jonesy11 11-03-09, 09:23 AM Why would they want the panel with the best PQ of any panel ever made? And it costs less.
soulcougher73 11-03-09, 10:25 AM I can understand this thread if it was say a Vizio plasma or something, but its a V10. Its pretty much the 2nd best plasma they could get. I wouldnt worry about it.
ike2187 11-03-09, 01:36 PM I guess I should just call it quits.. The 54v10 is still a great tv just sucks they won't budge for a tv with the best PQ.

Odds are they DON'T CARE that much...let it go and move on.
