I have a thin black line running horizontal - its on the upper third of my screen. I have a 42" Philips plasma with the back lighting feature. My extended warrany ran out a year ago. I was told I could get it looked at for $50 estimate and if fixed it would be subtracted from the bill -does this sound serious?

Only you can decide if its worth $50 to find out how much more its going to cost to fix the Philips.

If it was me, I would put the $50 toward a Pansonic 42 S 1. Recently its been on sale for $699.

Only a guess but I think you are looking at close to $200 by the time the Philips is repaired. Maybe I'm too skeptical, but I think those repair shops don't do anything inexpensive.
