View Full Version : Did I miscalculate my viewing distance?
I just bought my 50" S1 plasma for my bedroom. I sit 9 feet away maximum from the tv. When I watch blu-ray movies and most hd cable movies everything looks great. However, when I watch dvds on my blu-ray player and some hd cable, things look a little blurry. It feels like I am sitting too close for this size tv. I hooked up my 42" X1 in my room and images actually seem to look sharper and more detailed. Is the 50" too large for my bedroom if 9 feet is the maximum distance I watch at?
50" @ 9ft is not too close. I sit about 8.5' from one of my 60" displays and it is not too close.
I would think the issue could be in the settings

It all depends what you're watching and in what mode/settngs you're watching it in.
If you want to give some examples of which programs seem blurry, someone else who's seen it might be able to tell you why.
Well, for example, I was watching The Exorcist on dvd thru my blu-ray player. Through my 50" S1 everything looks a little fuzzy. Through my 42" X1, everything looks sharper and clearer. Keep in mind, the X1 is 720p and the S1 is 1080p...which confused me even more. As far as settings, I have both tvs on custom mode with contrast set at 40 until they have a couple hundred hours on them. So since the settings on both tvs are pretty much the same, I am left with no other conclusion that it's the distance from the tv I am sitting. Any thoughts?
Also, the picture on the S1 is very noisy. I can see tons of small yellowish-green gases on the screen which make the whole picture look static-like. Is this normal?
vkarthik 11-03-09, 04:44 PM 9 feet 50 inch should be fine. But i always add two ft more to the suggested settings. I have tried sitting at the optimum distance they suggested. Not impressed. So i decided to sit back.

What do you mean?

chrisherbert 11-03-09, 05:13 PM Sometims lower resolution screens actually look sharper than high resolution ones, because the pixels are clearly visible. I don't know what that "yellowish green" stuff is though.

It never hurts to post pictures.
The Exorcist is a really old movie. It may very well be blurry.
You can make a lousy picture look better by moving farther away from it, sure, but most of us don't determine our viewing habits by the worst case. There's more and more superior source material available every day.
You should also experiment with the settings. Some people have different settings they use when watching poor source material, but most of us just turn all the enhancement type stuff OFF. For instance, edge enhancement and sharpening can make film grain more pronounced.
mcjasonb 11-03-09, 06:59 PM you're not to close. most of the time i sit 7.5 feet from a 58", but sometimes as close as 6 feet. yes it's close but i like it like that.
JBDragon 11-04-09, 01:57 AM Ya, I'm about 7 feet in front of my 50" 1080P Plasma. A 50" in the Bedroom would be kind of nice, but I have NO TV in the bedroom. I'll read a book in the bedroom.

Very true. I have a ED 42" Plasma that is mindblowing sharp...despite the lack of true detail.
