View Full Version : Buy now or wait?
strider88 11-03-09, 05:37 PM I was wondering if you thought it was worth waiting to buy a Panasonic TC-P54G10 or buy something else. I have looked everywhere in the area I live and online everyone is sold out or they are asking way more than what I can get the TC-P54G10 for. I like the 54G10 but I do like the extra settings on 54V10. I can get a good deal on a Samsung PN58B650 right now but 58” may be to big sitting 9 feet away. The PQ on the Samsung looks awesome. I’m tired of waiting but don’t want to have buyer’s remorse down the road.
Nicktx27 11-03-09, 05:40 PM NO!!! Wait!!! Wait cause new tech will be out next year, but then you'll have to wait cause better tech will be out the years after that. But seriously, if you want a new set there's no better time to buy. There's some great tech out now, no point in chasing your tail waiting for the next best thing. You'll be waiting forever.
basenjib123 11-03-09, 06:33 PM Well, I can tell you this much. If you are going to wait for the Holidays, black friday, etc. you might be disappointed. Many retailers have cut back on the amount of inventory that they are bringing in for the holidays so the deals PROBABLY will not be there like years past.
I agree with the other poster. If you wait for better and better components ...you will be always waiting. I say buying now is as a good of a time as any for most components.
strider88 11-03-09, 07:27 PM Since the Panasonic TC-54V10 is hard to find and to expensive in am torn between the Panasonic TC-P54G10 or the Panasonic TC-P58S. Not sure which one to get.
Nicktx27 11-03-09, 07:33 PM G series is right below V series.

regarding 9 feet viewing distance and tv size:
I have the p65v10 and sit around 10-11 feet away; I could easily go bigger (if I had the $) or closer, so I do not think you would find the 58" too big at 9 feet.
regarding buy now or wait:
if you are thinking panny, then the current generation of G and V models are excellent (maybe S too, though I have not seen an S in person) and a big jump up from last year's models (though the older models were nice tvs).
I can relate to your decision making angst; went through it myself.
Here is what I did and why:
I jumped in and bought when the new panny models hit the street as they looked great in person and had great reviews.
I went Panasonic since they had a very good plasma reputation.
I went 65" because I wanted the biggest plasma I could get/afford.
I went with the V model as it had all of the features I wanted right now, or would want later.
I bought online from Cleveland Plasma because they had a great reputation (well deserved, I might add).
I have the p65v10 for a month now; no buyers remorse at this point in time. Everything I hoped for, and more.
Good luck with whichever tv you eventually select!
basenjib123 11-03-09, 10:25 PM I just got the Panny 58S from 6th ave "name your price" and I am very happy with it. I am not saying it has just as good of a picture as the V series but its pretty darn close to my eyes. The G series seems to have a slight edge but not enough to justify the price difference for me. Oh for whats its worth...we sit about 10 feet from the TV and it seems about right.
I was going to get the 65V10 but I get the feeling that Panasonic might have cut that line off cause they are gung-ho to get their 3D sets out and about ASAP. Being that I like 3D I'm going to wait for 2010.

Every day is now Black Friday. It's the only way retailers can move merchandise.

you will be disappointed. 3D will be nothing more than a advertising gimmick.

Thanks but I don't think so. From what I've seen in theaters lately and from other demos, it's just what I'd thought it would be.

if you have to wear glasses, it is gimmicky. I also want to point out, 3D is useless on a person like me. I have lazy eye and cannot see 3D. When they get displays together that have 3D without the use of glasses, it will have moved beyond gimmick to an actual selling point
nnarum23 11-05-09, 11:20 AM How am I supposed to wear 3D glasses when I already wear glasses for my vision.
I agree with Ziv, it has a niche, but that's all it is. 3D will never be the standard.
JonW747 11-05-09, 11:22 AM 3D DVDs and BluRays that require glasses are already selling.

i agree with hplaceavs. i have pn58a550 at 9 feet too. i felt it is not big enough already. get the TC-P58S1 http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-VIERA-TC-P58S1-58-Inch-Plasma/dp/B002IKA1S6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1257441277&sr=1-1 (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002IKA1S6?tag=avs-forum-20)
Thanks but I don't think so. From what I've seen in theaters lately and from other demos, it's just what I'd thought it would be.strider dont wait for the next tech breakthrough because there is going to be problems with it just like there used to be with plasma and now lcd ie off angle viewing motion lag etc....plasmas are a mature technology and panny has fixed the big problems like burn in. If it was me go bigger go bigger go bigger.

What makes glasses gimmicky? Sorry about your lazy eye and predictions aside, I say let's just wait and see where the dust settles. I happen to like 3D very much.
miscrms 11-06-09, 08:24 PM I will say the Toy Story Digital 3D double feature was like nothing I have ever seen. Gimmicky glasses and all, it was an amazing picture. I did get the inkling that we are at the dawn of a completely new era in movies/TV. I'm sure there were plenty of people that felt sync sound and color were gimmicky too ;)
PhillMan17 12-24-09, 12:10 AM I am now torn: I can get a TC-P54G10 for the SAME price as the TC-P58S1 ($1400 each).
I want the bigger size of the 58", but I want the better quality of G10 series.
I guess it really is just a personal choice here, what would you recommend?

I guess it really is just a personal choice here, what would you recommend?I'd recommend a V10. Correct and flicker-reduced 24Hz implementation is crucial for BluRay. We're a few days from 2010. Why must you suffer 2:3 pulldown jerkiness!
Just my 24 cents. :)
Nino1919 12-24-09, 12:14 AM I would recommend the 58. Though i love my 50 inch G10, i wish i would have gone 58s1. Or 65s1:D

V10 is out of the budget (cheapest I have seen is like $2600+). :( Like I said, I could get the 54G10 or 58S1 for $1400

Is that purely because of the size difference? But at 54" vs. 58" it is less of a size difference, no?
Also, do you use the THX mode at all - that is the one feature I am looking at that pushes me towards the 54G10, but the size of the 58S1 pulls me back.

There is literally no difference between the two besides THX as far as picture quality goes. Get the 58S1.

Thank you! :D
That is what all night last night yielded from research: exact same screen. I have no interest in the other features, would never use.
In terms of THX mode, if I cared, I rather go for a pro calibration, time will tell.
