View Full Version : Tabletop plasma stand w/ room for center channel underneath?
nlpearman 11-03-09, 08:58 PM Hopefully you guys can help me out. I have an AV stand with a hutch. The hutch is much loved by my wife (therefore, the hutch stays). My plasma TV sits on the AV stand and is framed by the hutch. My unit is one of these:

My center channel, when placed on top of the hutch, is over a foot higher than my TV. I'd prefer to put the center channel on top of the TV stand (closer to both the TV and ear height). What I need, then, is a stand for my TV that sits on top of my AV cabinet but raises the TV enough to clear the center channel (7.5"). Sorta like this, but with some height:

This would be nice.
What would be ideal is if this stand both raised the TV and telescoped forward, creating a space under the TV for my center channel. The front baffle and the TV screen would be on the same plane.
Kinda like this...

... but sturdy enough to hold a 46" plasma.
Do tabletop stands like this exist?
bluewaves 11-03-09, 09:46 PM can you mount the TV to the back of the stand?

Nope - the hutch is actually about 4 inches from the back of the cabinet. I toyed with installing a telescoping wall mount on the wall behind the hutch and cutting a whole in the hutch's backing, but that'll kill the resale value of the unit should we upgrade at some point.
The backing itself is nowhere near strong enough to attach a mount to it directly.
Nicktx27 11-03-09, 10:49 PM I like that middle one. Where did you find it?
the 2nd below has a 130lb capacity and looks vertically adjustable.

I found both the second and third ones here:

Thanks, borf. Those stands are floorstanding models. I'm looking for one to go on top of my current AV stand.

Is it possible to simply build yourself a plywood box of suitable dimensions to raise the TV? It could be stained to match.

I suppose this would be possible, but this creates three concerns:
1. My center is already fairly big (PSB C40), and the box would make it too big;
2. With the box, I'd still need to use the stand that's currently on the TV, which would elevate the TV more than I'd like. If I could replace the stock stand completely, I could set the TV exactly at the height needed to clear the center channel (cleaner look, higher WAF, TV closer to eye level);
3. I have no woodworking tools or ability. I'm fairly sure my box would collapse, causing my TV to crush my center channel just before it smashed onto my floor :)
Gary McCoy 11-04-09, 04:17 PM As I see it, you have three options:
1) Use a wall mount on the back panel of the TV stand you have, if necessary reinforcing the back panel first. This is what I did with an expensive Ethan Allen cabinet, which needed no reinforcement. But I retained the additional hardware that came with the mount, knowing that the TV lifetime would be far less than the furniture, and I would possibly need different hardware for new but similar size TVs.
2) Set the TV directly on the speaker. Most wooden box speakers can take the weight. Be sure you have a tether or other restraint to prevent a tip forward which would destroy the TV.
3) Fabricate a mount, using a low profile wall bracket and constructing the pedatal or L-shaped piece for under the speaker.
But I DON'T think you are going to find the adapter you are looking for. You have a specific and unusual requirement, not something you can buy an over-the-counter mount for. But if you have no fabrication skills or tools, you might be better off selling the furniture you have and buying something with a center speaker provision.
tbird8450 11-04-09, 04:39 PM I searched for a stand to accomplish something similar and didn't have any luck.
I stopped at Lowes, bought a sheet of pine and built one. It came in at under $20 in materials and it works perfectly.

It would be reasonably cheap to hire a woodworker to build you a long, rectangular box to set the tv on with its current stand. You can have him build it to your exact specifications so that it works with the stand you have, gives you the height you want, and still leaves room for your center channel (it could be built open so that the center channel sits under it, or closed so that the center channel sits in front of it). You can have it made from the wood of your choice and stained to match your furniture. My dad did this with his setup. The TV is mounted to the factory stand it comes with, then sits on top of the wooden stand (box) he had made, and under the box with a open front is his center channel. Then the whole package sits on top of the piece of furniture. It looks very classy and is made for his exact needs.
Your response to the above suggestion made it sound like this won't work, but I don't see how it couldn't work if you have someone build it exactly how you want. This is a very easy, simple, and relatively cheap solution. Gary McCoy is right, this is such a specific need that you aren't going to find what you are looking for already made. You'll have to "think outside the box," so to speak, to get what you want.
nlpearman 11-04-09, 07:26 PM Much thanks to Gary, tbird and protechie.
I had a sneaking suspicion that what I wanted didn't exist but, it was worth finding out if anyone had seen something like what I was looking for. I agree that the fabricated box would be my quickest option, but one concern still stands. The speaker + box + TV with its original stand would all have to fit in the "TV cutout" in the hutch (See pic in original post). I can just about squeeze in the TV (without stand) and the center channel.
I figure Gary hit it on the head... in the absence of such a mount, I may simply have to wait until I can replace the cabinet entirely.
Thanks again, fellas.
What about placing the speaker in the center cabinet beneath the TV? Replace the glass with black/dark grey mesh cloth... or a color that matches the rest of the unit.

Good thought, chinee, but my center channel is 23.5" wide and those doors are 16" each. No go.
This is a problem that has been around for a while. If you raise your tv up to put the center channel under it you have a picture that will be higher than is desirable for immersion experience. If you do the same thing but cut stand down so it keeps the picture at desired height, the center channel will be very low and below accepted ear level.
My solution was to have a low stand and balance sound with sound pressure meter which raised the volume of center channel in respect to its height as it sits as center of your sound system.Sounds fine to me.

That's the dilemma exactly. Your ears and your eyes are essentially on the same plane, so you can't have both your video at eye level and your center channel at ear level (sonically transparent projector screens excepted).
I suppose immediately above or below the screen are both good, but my cabinet forces me to go over a foot above my screen. Admittedly, it doesn't sound that bad, and if I'm not thinking about it I'm not bothered by it, but I know it's sub-optimal... and that's enough to irk me. :)
My next cabinet will be a low one, too. TV at eye level and center channel pointed upwards.
ueckerj 11-04-09, 10:04 PM OP; I have the same problem. Right now my LCD sits on top of the center using the standard stand that came with the TV. This ads About 2.5" to the screen height which I would love to be able to avoid as the TV is already fairly high.
I found this mount which I was going to use to raise my LCD enough to fit a center underneath. It has adjustable height.

Ah-ha! The power of the interwebs!
Since the telescoping arm isn't gonna happen, this kinda thing in likely my next-best option. Funnily enough, I've looked at this stand several times and not realized that it's adjustable. Now to figure out if it'll raise my current 42" plasma (and probably my hopefully-soon-to-come 46" plasma) high enough to clear my CC.
Thanks, ueckerj!
