I just received an email from Pioneer stating their firmware is available for open source! So I assume non-elites can possibly have some elite features!

It is only because part of the firmware is built from Linux and BusyBox which is open source. Because certain sections of the Pioneer firmware are based on open source code in order for Pioneer to use them they are required to release those parts as open source. (http://www.busybox.net/license.html) The GNU Public License basically says "you can use and edit our code freely but whatever you use and edit must remain free and be release as open source.

It is only part of the Pioneer firmware that is released as open source. Believe me, Pioneer is not giving out the recipe for the secret sauce for free here.

Well it's not clear how much or little that will include. Granted it won't include all the fancy processing, but in terms of menu adjustments and things like that, if people can make FW dumps they could possibly open up more customization of their displays (similar to like the patch). I am somewhat skeptical though how much actually will be released since as you say they are probably releasing the parts they're required to release and nothing more.

I know this is an old thread, but the open source links on their website are all broken (bluray, anyhow). So much for releasing the source code...
