View Full Version : Lg hs201
hi there, i am a novice when it comes to projectors and was looking at buying a projector not more then $500-$600 AUD (seen as though the price of the new lg hx300 will be close to $1000). i couldn't help but notice the great quality of the lg hs201, but i was looking at ebay and came across this projector.

it seems to state that it has better specs then the lg with more Lumens and others.
i was wondering if the specs stack up and if it is true.there is also videos on the page and on youtube. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Don't do it! The whole post stinks of deceit (there's a new smell to explore!)
The only spec that seem to be better is the brightness, but then they talk about native and commercial brightness... never heard of the latter.
Further it says - "better than all the other LED projectors coming from China"... that is enough to make me run the other way.
Bulb life 6000 hours... - I wonder if it even is an LED projector.
All around looks like a risky buy... I'd stick with the LG.
thanks for that but, im not sure if i should now wait for the hx300 or just go with the hs201?
does anyone want to sell their hs201?
Cudda_Kine 03-03-10, 05:51 PM People, this projector can't do more than 80" focused! Can someone please tell me what they did to make it focus on 100"+ screens?

Well, hard to say... if it comes out within a month you'd be really pissed if you didn't wait. But if it costs twice as much, then I don't think it's worth it.
This is my third projector (5th if we consider two I bought, didn't like and returned), and the one I am most impressed with.
i have feeling that it will cost around the $1000 mark so i might go and get the hs201. do you know where i would be able to get it or a second hand one?
i will also be having a 10ft distance from projector to wall and i will be sitting within this range. will the picture look pixclelated?
thanks for your help.
bobbyslav 03-03-10, 09:14 PM People, this projector can't do more than 80" focused! Can someone please tell me what they did to make it focus on 100"+ screens?
I don't know how big my screen is... It's not over 100, but I think it is more than 80".
I agree the focus is not the best, but it depends on the source, I am guessing computer graphics would be most obvious.
To compensate for the slightly blurry, out of focus image, I have turned up the sharpness to 90, something I've never done with any other display. At first I also had the edge enhancement turned on max, but eventually I've switched it off.
I don't know if I've simply got used to the picture, or the projector actually needed a break in period, but after about two weeks I no longer had problems with the focus or anything else really.

Where are you? The only place I've seen it for sale is Amazon.
I don't know about distances ---feet and inches are very vague terms to me. I have mine mounted above my head. I don't think the picture will look pixelated. You'll notice pixels around objects with straight lines on them and text, but nothing like the screen door effect on older LCD projectors.
People, this projector can't do more than 80" focused! Can someone please tell me what they did to make it focus on 100"+ screens?
I got mine focused at 92" 4:3 ratio..but its about a hair away from the end of the focus length. That suites me as 92" is about as big as I can get on the wall that it is being projected on. I don't think I could get it to go any bigger then 96" because of the focus limit.
So far this projector has been great...I watch everything on it and the kids play the Wii on it all the time and I have no worries about the bulb.

what about second hand ones that people do not want any more as they want the new model or just want to get rid of it? where could i find this out? is there a thread on it?
Mikey90 03-04-10, 02:52 AM I wish a full 1080p LED projector came out under 2k, it would be really cool to have a full 1080p projector that can do a 180" screen for my garage, Im thinking of just upgrading since an LED one wont be out for a while.
Man I really want to get this projector but Amazon doesnt ship it to Canada, any Canadians found a store that does?
hi there mate, did you end up buying the lg hs200/201 projector as im in the same boat as amazon dont send to australia? where could i get one from?
thanks mate
MCaugusto 03-04-10, 09:15 AM r2zza >>> I'd gladly sell you my HS-201 as soon as the HX300G is released, as i am planning on purchasing one of them even if it costs $1.000, that's how impressed i am with my 201 !...BUT, you'll have to wait until its replacement is sitting on the table and projecting onto the screen...
Insofar as focusing on screens larger than 80" diagonal, i have mine focused very/very tight on a 76" diagonal high-gain screen - very/very high-gain screen that i got in '92 to go with my CRT projector and now that is mated with the HS-201 it makes the picture look plasma-like ! - and the focus ring had to be turned almost all the way to the top, as expected.
I imagine one could use the HS-201 with screens up to 92" diagonal or so provided one could live with a very slightly defocused image, as in individual pixels looking slightly blurry. I don't think i could, especially after seeing what incredibly bright, detailed and sharply-focused picture i am already getting with only those "meager" 480.000 pixels that the HS-201 has to offer, although i imagine that is owed partly to the fact that the HS-201 uses a DMD chip from Texas Instruments instead of LCD chips.
As for the distance from my screen to the point where i can see individual pixels, i noticed that on a "grid" of 800x600 pixels i wasn't able to discern single pixels standing next to where the projector had to be placed, 7 feet and 10 inches from the screen, and that's why i already bought a ceiling mount that uses standard tripod screw-mount and comes with an extension pole so that i can mount the HS-201 or the HX300G to the ceiling and sit right below the projector, thus maximizing the viewing area of my small screen.

kenshin2b 03-04-10, 02:24 PM Mine will be up for sale as well when HX300G is released :)
I am also looking into the new Casio Laser/LED Hybrid pj.... tough decision, I guess I will pick up whichever one would be out in the market first...

I also considered this Casio model versus the LG HX300G but after noticing that the Casio hybrid uses a rather unorthodox combination of a red LED, a blue laser AND a color wheel with green "fluorescent" spokes and clear spokes (both needed to produce blue and green colors from the same laser source), i gave up on it.
After all, one of the major benefits of either LEDs or laser sources for illuminating micro displays is getting rid of color wheels, and now Casio comes up with this "combo" involving yet another use for color wheels, which are known for being noisy and prone to premature failure ? Thanks, but NO, thanks !

Sisyphus 03-04-10, 09:41 PM Marcos,
At your insistence I emailed LG. :) It took a while for them to reply. The Phlatlight for HX300G will indeed be the PT-54. This isn't a bad thing, IMO. Maybe not as bright as the PT-121, but using PT-54 should keep the price down. I'm guessing the Samsung will run ~$1000 or more. The Samsung chassis is likely larger as well to accomodate additional cooling.

so does anyone actually know the release date of the hx300? has any one inquired with lg? they wont reply to me as they say i have to contact lg australia, but lg aus doesnt stock it.??
what is the difference betwen LG HS200G and LG HS201? because there is a price difference on amazon, but they look the same? im confused, do they have same specs?
Mikey90 03-07-10, 12:29 AM they are the same thing, the hs200 is the one sold in Europe and the hs201 is the one sold here in America, the only one small difference is the hs200 has an FM reciever.
would it be worth it buying a 3d projector such as the Acer H5360, over the lg hs201 or hx300? i just dont know what to get? any help with outlining pros and cons will provide a great insight to a newbie like me. thanks :)
... which video codecs/formats does the hs200g/201g support when using usb input? And is there a max resolution and bitrate?
As far as I recall the 102G only accepted max PAL/NTSC resolution and XViD/DIVX. I think I wasn't able to get a 720p avi to run. How about the 200g?
paulstefano 03-12-10, 08:56 PM Can Somebody help me with a setup question on the hs201?
I am thinking about buying one for my basement. Right now it's unfinished, but I plan to do a home theater.
If I use my wall as a screen, can I set up the projector wherever I want, and just accept whatever image size it comes up with? I'm not picky about size, so long as it's 50 inches or more.
I have investigated screens, but I really want the whole wall available, so I plan to paint the fresh drywall with a screen paint.
So, My plan now is to hang the projector from the ceiling at about 7 feet away.
My problem is, with the basement being finished now, there may be a few inches of difference in the final position. So, as I said, keeping in mind I'm using the whole wall, can I just place it anywhere in that 7-8 feet range and focus in to whatever screen size ends up there?
Thanks for the help.

Paul >>> My HS-201 is placed at 7 ft and 8 inches from the screen and my screen is 76" diagonal or 60" wide, which is near the top of the focus range of the HS-201, so, in your case, it should be fine.
If you are planning on hanging it from the ceiling, be aware that it needs to be also placed with the center of the lens facing the top edge of the screen area, as well as located exactly in the middle of the screen area, so, if your screen is placed at 30 inches from the ceiling, so must the center of the projector's lens.
Of course you could use its keystone function to give you some leeway insofar as placement is concerned, but one should always avoid "Keystoning" if at all possible as it will introduce some image distortion as penalty for its usage.

I have tried this projector in a store here in UAE and as well as the hd65 playing transformers. basically both of them is placed on the same lighting environment in the store. but maybe it is just me but the image produced is kinda not good, im just thinking maybe it needs calibration? or it needed a much more "less light" environment? but everyone says here that it is bright even when there is light?
so when i tried the HD65 , it is really good out of the box plugged using a vga cable...
I really like to get this one because of the lamp life and because of the sharp images/pictures that i see from here as well as from the videos from youtube.
maybe it really needs calibration to get good picture?

I own both of these pjs. Hs201(800x600) cannot be compared to the HD65(720p), the resolution is way lower. Out of the box, contrast was off for the HS201. I did some calibration using the DVE disc, which made a big difference.
HS201 has only 200 lumens vs HD65's 1600 claimed lumens. So with ambient light HD65 will look better. I have a totally light controlled environment so both look decent for me.
As your primary Projector, I would not pick the HS201. You will continue to crave for better resolution after the first few days of wow factor goes away.
paulstefano 03-13-10, 09:14 AM What does everybody used for cabling? Looks like from post 1 it comes with a VGA/component adapter. Is it worth upgrading to HDMI?
I have a 50 foot component cable already, but I would have to purchase a new HDMI cable if I wanted to use that.
I ordered the projector yesterday and while it ships, I'm trying to get my setup in order.

I saw those. What is the verdict, however? The HDMI looks better to me. Are you saying because you are seeing pixels, that the Component is preferred?
afineman 03-14-10, 04:42 PM paulstefano
I was the one who took those photos.
HDMI is clearly better, SvGA coming in to the component connection was more blurry(at the pixel level).
Hope it helps

what wuld be a good projector screen for the hs201? what is difference between white and glass cystal?
paulstefano 03-16-10, 10:12 PM Just got my projector and all I can say is WOW!
I should preface this by saying that this is my first projector, but the HS201 is really impressive.
I was only testing the thing on my green living room wall, while I wait for the work on my basement (and theater room) to be finished. I'm still deciding where to mount it.
Couple of things I noticed. I put it out to test it. I laid out the tape measure and looked at it from different distances.
1. 7 feet is too small. May as well not even have a projector. It looked like my 42 inch Vizio panel.
2. 20 feet (I think. I just put it on the side table well beyond where my tape measure ran out) was too far. Couldn’t even get the thing to focus completely. Also, the screen was about 12 feet by 10 feet.
3. The distance with the biggest screen but still with a tight focus was about 11 feet. This was while it was sitting on the entertainment center. Things may be completely different from the ceiling
Overall, though, I was REALLY impressed. The quality was great. It wasn’t HD but you could never tell at that size. All this on a Green Wall, which should make it look pretty terrible. A Netflix Streamed movie over HDMI and Tinker Bell on a VGA connected DVD setup looked amazing. As for brightness, it was good. It has 3 modes. I can’t remember the name, but 1 is useless, too dim. Then there is Economy, and Presentation. Economy was good. We watched it with the sun still shining through the blinds and it was okay. Then with the lights just dimmed, and darkness outside, it was perfect. Presentation mode was really bright. Would work probably in any light. The trick is there is a fan, and it was quiet in Economy. In Presentation, you could really hear it.
What does this all mean? Well, the projector is a great buy. It’s really tiny, too. Only about the size of small book. It will give a great picture, and should last forever. We could also break it out for events, or parties, and move it anywhere around the house pretty easily. The only trick will be the mounting. We may have to have it hanging farther back, than I anticipated. The other option is a floor mount. When I was holding it, it projected fine from my arm height at about 5 feet from the floor.
I just can't say enough how impressive this was to me. I have used office projectors for years, and never thought I could get this quality out of a machine this small and affordable.
Thanks for all help from the folks here.
bobbyslav 03-16-10, 10:54 PM what wuld be a good projector screen for the hs201? what is difference between white and glass cystal?
I am no expert, but since no one has answered, I'll give it a shot:
white is the color of the screen surface
glass (beaded) is an extra coating that can be added to any color screen (white or gray).
If I remember correctly with glass beaded screen you get more gain, useful for lower lumen projectors like the HS201, but lose some flexibility because the viewing angle is narrower with this type of screen.
gomjabar6 03-17-10, 12:31 AM I was wondering what the output voltage & amperage is from the power brick
MCaugusto 03-17-10, 02:02 PM INPUT : 100-240V /// 50-60 Hz /// 1.5 AMP
OUTPUT : 19V /// 4.74 AMP /// 90 W MAX
MCaugusto 03-17-10, 02:23 PM paulstefano >>> Remember that the manual specifies the maximum diagonal screen size for the HS-201 as being 80" diagonal or 60" wide and when you turn the focus dial all the way to the top to achieve the tighest pixel focusing for a screen that size, the projector must be placed approximately 8 feet away from the screen; That picture would be almost four times the size of a 42" screen...
Of course it doesn't mean that you can't go even further; In my case i found that the slight blurring of onscreen pixels wasn't worthwhile trying to go for a larger screen.
For a quick calibration, may i suggest you select Expert 1 or 2 Picture Mode, Contrast 85, Brightness 50, H Sharpness 50, V Sharpness 52, Color 57, Tint G3, Dynamic Contrast LOW, , Gamma Medium, Black Level Low and White Balance Medium ?

Hmmm.
I still haven't mounted on the celing, but I did stand in the middle of my room with it over my head. I think that was about the same distance from the ceiling as to where my mount would be.
So, I projected at 10 feet and I was able to focus perfectly fine. I'm not sure if I'm blind, or what, but this seemed pretty good to me. I suppose I may have to move it up a little because The focus ring was at the top of the dial, leaving no margin for error. I think you can go slightly bigger than 80 inches without much degradation, though.
paulstefano 03-17-10, 11:43 PM Has anybody run for long periods of time on "Normal" mode? I find this much brighter obviously, but the fan is an issue and it gets hot. Is there a danger in running for long periods of time on this setting? I can live with the noise, but not if it shortens life.

Where this is your first projector, I can understand why you might say it gets HOT but in reality it is rather cool (vs a lamp projector).
Somewhere in this forum someone measured the temp in normal mode to be 98 degrees (body temp), this projector is warm to the touch but not hot.
As I've stated before, I'm a heavy user, all my content comes via a projector so on the weekends this projector may be on 12-16 hours a day in normal mode( no lamp, no need to turn off when stepping out for a few). so I can say this projector has no problem being on for a long time.
Hope it helps

Yes, I did choose it over the Epson 705HD. It wasn't really a difficult choice - I hate the Epson instantly, and loved the LG instantly.
The Optoma hd65 is a different situation though - being a DLP projector as well. I am sure its picture will be better and brighter than the LG.
Coming from the Mitsubishi HC1500, which at the time was the main competitor to the Optoma, I did like the picture of the Mitsubishi better, but couldn't stand it's color wheel whine any longer and I was out of the warranty. Mitsubishi wanted $600 to repair it. Fat chance!
Aside from resolution and brightness though, the LG has clear advantages - it is absolutely silent - I use mine exclusively in Eco mode; it's color saturation rivals that of flat panel TVs; it's shadow detail, black levels, and contrast are actually better than the Mitsubishi; I haven't seen a single rainbow on the LG and I don't get tired watching the way I used to with the Mitsubishi and X1 before it.
I use it in a room with three windows, but I can control the light well - I have black velvet curtains on the windows so I can have it pretty dark. Depending on what I am watching though, sometimes I prefer to have some light in the room and even at night I turn on a little night lamp. Plus my wall color is very light, almost white blue - not exactly ideal for home theater. I think in my case the lower brightness of the LG is actually an advantage.

As I've stated before, I'm a heavy user, all my content comes via a projector so on the weekends this projector may be on 12-16 hours a day in normal mode( no lamp, no need to turn off when stepping out for a few). so I can say this projector has no problem being on for a long time.
Hope it helps

I'm with afineman on this one : i am also a very heavy user of my HS-201 at about 10 hours per day and i find that the unit gets barely warm to the touch; Often times i fall sleep during "sessions" and don't feel really guilty about it, at an average usage of 80 watts per hour and a light source specd to last at least 30.000 hours...
I measured the temperature on top of the case at approximately 92 degrees and at 82 degrees about 3 inches off the exhaust fan duct.
This is truly how front pjs should have been made all along...
I still can't comprehend how exactly LG is capable of packing such performance inside such tiny box; As an example, if you guys go to Cine4Home site and read their very/very thorough reviews of XXX-expensive LED pjs, they found out that both models reviewed exhibited a rather loud and annoying hum coming from the state-of-the-art LEDs control board inside the units, and that's from two different manufacturers !
Now, how is LG capable of using a similar LED light source, Luminus Devices LED chipsets, that must need some type of control board as well, is literally noiseless, exhausts such little heat, outputs 200/300 lumens and comes packaged inside such tiny plastic box ?... Amazing comes to mind !

Strangely enough, while waiting for the X300, I went from the 201 to the 705HD. I actually love it. Of course, I loved the 201, as well, but they are really two very different units for different needs. If I were to sum them both up in a nutshell:
705HD:
--Light canon! It's unbelievable, in the crazy bright desert sunlight, with lights on, I still needn't do anything in Eco mode. Can see it all.
--Like the 720p resolution
--Can project 120" from about 11' back
--Great PC output
--Terrible SD output (compressed satellite signals)
--Bulb! Though this one is longer than most at 5000 hours
--Gets pretty hot but that's only compared to the 201
HS201:
--It's not as bright but the colors are vibrant, I don't see that pop with my 705HD
--Very small and runs pretty cool in Eco mode, plus you can project a 110" image from about 10' back
--No need to worry about lamp hours! +++
--Has a GREAT SD picture for the satellite signal that I fed it
--Inexpensive and great bang for the buck
--Doesn't have as many inputs, but that's easily dealt with using a cheap HDMI switch (same goes for the 705HD)
While I don't intend to keep my 705HD for too long, I love having the brightness and the extra resolution. I happen to think it's a great machine though I know bobbyslav doesn't agree but different strokes for different folks. I like it as much as my 201, but for very different reasons.
I'm kinda wondering... anyone ever make a modification to the fan? Maybe use a one of these fans...
http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-120mm-Silent-Value/dp/B000O8I474
Basically the Idea would be to cut a hole in the top or bottom and use this fan to exhaust hot air. The bigger the fan the quieter it is! Besides, the cooler it is the longer it will last!
Just wondering if anyone ever thought of doing a mod like that. Tho, one could just drill holes in the case and mount the fan on the OUTSIDE of the projector to let the air flow throw the holes.
afineman 03-18-10, 07:25 PM ericlp
Interesting question, for me the answer is "No" because I use this projector in "Normal" mode as well as "Eco" mode.
In both those modes the fan is quieter than my computer (fan noise).
People, this is a "Cool" projector that can run 24/7 for a total of 30 K+ hours (divide 30,000 by 24, that equals these # of days) so we can have this on for 1250 days or 3.24 years continues.
granted the 800X600 is in the Infocus X1 days, but the color WOW factor can not be matched.
My venting is done

Yes, technically the LEDs could last 30,000 hours, however you are dealing with more than LEDS, you have a whole electronic package that has yet to be tested long term. Plasma cells can last 10K to 20K hours or more but the power supplies, video controller circuitry, and other electronics that drive the plasma screen frequently fail long before that.
Enjoy your PJ for what it does for you. You early adopters are important to the process of getting manufacturers to develop quality machines that the majority of PJ owners will consider for their homes.

Just be a little patient as in a couple of months i expect there will be a good amount of used HS-201 projectors for sale out there with the introduction of the new HX300G, which so many people have already shown interest in purchasing to replace their HS-201...
kenshin2b 03-24-10, 03:33 PM I will list mine up for sale as soon as I can get a hold of the hx300. I have been birddogging Amazon on a daily basis to see if they have it in stock....

afineman 04-09-10, 07:51 PM Greetings All
Having owned the LG HS 201 for over 3 months, I have found an unexpected surprise in my electric bill.
As stated before "I am a heavy user" the projector is the first thing I turn on and the last when I goto bed.
On average over the past 3 months I have reduced my electric bill by about $20 per month.
I turned off my hot tub after I bought my 06 Smart car then buying this LG LED projector knocked my electric bill down form $140 per month to about $67 per month.
So this means the ROI (return on investment) will come quicker (about a year) for this projector.
I guess this post is more about the LED technology/projector technology than LG. I'm still on the fence about the HX 300, but where I still ONLY have DVDs and a HD tuner card the 800X600 res already exceeds my viewing needs.
I still throughly enjoy(daily) this projector and would be willing to recommend it to other new people.
Well I guess this is a needed bump

Bsims2719 04-10-10, 01:22 PM According to the spec the 201 uses 80 watts. A typical LCD projector uses 240 watts which by comparison would be a savings of 160 watts. Assuming that you are paying 10 cents kilowatthour and using the projector for 16 hours a day that is only 26 cents a day or 8 dollars a month. Are you paying more for power than 10 cents per kwh? Is the 201 consuming less power than 80 watts? I am curious. Thanks
afineman 04-10-10, 04:27 PM Bsims2719
I run my 201 in econ mode and I think I read somewhere that is about 58 watts (I could be wrong), this replaced an infocus IN26.
I can not say that all the savings was due to the projector, this was a warm winter my wife is really picky about electricity usage, but having said that.
I compared January, February and March of 09 to 10 and the bill was about $20 less(each month) this 3 months than the past 3 months. I should of thought before I attributed all the savings to this projector, a warmer winter meant furnace is on less. and last fall I did have all my windows/doors changed.
Bsims2719 thanks for making me think more about this, you are most likely correct and this projector was only part of the reason, comparing the spring time quarter would be better (no furnace) choice.
Actual usage (I work 4 days a week) 16-20 hours Fri, Sat, Sun and 6-7 hours Mon, Tue, Wed, Thur about 80 hours of use per normal work week.
(in case you haven't seen my previous posts)I suffer from insomnia (it's an age thing) and all my content comes via a computer (movies, tv shows, Internet (DUH) even my over seas calls (Skype)), so this projector is on most awake hours.
Thanks for the correction
Brent
Bsims2719 04-11-10, 11:21 AM Thanks for additional info. 58 watts is a major improvement for a projector. The only thing I don't like about my current bulb projector is the heat output. I have it in a small room and from the start of the movie to the end there is a noticable difference in room temperature. I am looking forward to purchasing the HX300 so its nice to know that this will be significantly improved.
MCaugusto 04-12-10, 09:31 PM Although neither the owner's manual nor LG's USA website specify the power usage of the HS-201 (!?), the UK website lists the power usage at 80 watts...
On a side note, i continue getting very/very impressed with the HS-201 even after three months of ownership. I recently connected my new computer to my Onkyo 886 A/V processor via HDMI and then on to the HS-201 and i am getting an extremely sharp image displayed on the 76" diagonal screen i use; Texts are sharp and clear, as good as i get on my SVGA monitor, youtube videos are certainly watchable and in case i miss any of my favorite shows on TV, i can now catch them online and watch them on my large screen....Cool....

Thanks Brent!
And to all the great reviews on the HS201.
Just bought one today on Amazon for $499. And while I know the HX300 is shortly on the way, I prefer myself to wait for an HD LED Projector that is 3D ready for 3D Bluray Players and 3D TV Broadcasts. Which most likely won't be out til late or early next year. So at least until then I won't be spending a mint for an HD LED Projector which I'm sure will be the case on the HX300. I'm sure I'll be enjoying hours among hours of this HS201 before spending more than double the price on a LED 3D ready Projector. Which for me would be worth the price.
Thanks again for all the reviews and thoughts.
Looking forward to receiving my HS201! :)
afineman 04-20-10, 09:57 PM Thanks mehmet_alp
That video shows the LG HS201 only draws 47 watts in econo mode (the mode I use with the Da-Lite high power screen)
Here are the specs for my past projector http://www.retrevo.com/search?q=InFocus+IN26%2BEP&rt=sp&modelid=1081626
I believe I get to say it is a 200 watt per hour savings (maybe a hair less)
I stand by my statement of 80 hours per week of on time, so in a week I saved (80X200= Watt hours saved per week) 16K watt hours per week and of course 16X52= 832K watt hours per year, I'm saving close to a Mega watt per year (I really wanted to say Mega Watt:))
I calculated what my per KW rate was (close to $.06 per Kw) so .06X832=49.9
So yes this post is about saving $50 bucks per year (I'm disappointed it is so small, for some strange reason I believed it would calculate to be much bigger), BUT the savings has a 2 fold advantage. 1: I don't have to pay for 832 K watts of energy, 2: the electric company doesn't have to make that 832 K watts of energy.
So in the end this projector (forgetting about lamp cost) would pay for it self in 10 years (JUST based on electrical savings for me).
I want to disclose what an epiphany I recently had.
I had an Infocus X1 as well as an Infocus IN26, I have stated (and still do today) this is my best viewing experience to date and am amazed at the brightness (this is where the epiphany comes in).
The LG HS201 produces colors@ 200 lumen's that a bulb projector would need a few thousand lumen's to produce, this may be the WOW factor most talk about.
Well the 2nd glass of wine is kicking in, so I believe it is time to go

I just received my HS201.
I also have an HD65 720p Optoma and the difference bewteen both projectors isn't all that major. The larger the screen size the better the HS201 looks, and the less you notice any major screen door effect. I have both PJs projecting on my 80" (wide) screen and the HS201 holds it's own along side my HD65. Wow! Very impressive!
I couldn't imagine the HX300 being all that much better. Especially since I already see the difference between the HS201 and the HD65 720p. Interesting. Looks like I made the right choice in waiting for a 3D ready Led Projector before going high cost on a LED.
Love the HS201! :)
Bravo, LG!
SLCentral 04-21-10, 07:25 PM So I could really use some help guys. I got the HS201 today, and have it all set up. Using VGA for my computer and HDMI for my Xbox 360.
On my PC (VGA), 800x600 native looks by far the best. It gets more and more blurry the higher I go from 800x600. Even at 1024x768 text is very blurry and almost unreadable. I can deal with 800x600 though, that isn't a big deal.
My problem is with my Xbox. On 480p, 720p, and 1080p, the graphics are all blurry. I can't find a way to avoid this. This is via HDMI. Does anyone have any ideas?
It's as if the scaler of the projector is introducing a lot of problems when it gets a signal that isn't native. The Xbox doesn't offer a way to spit out 800x600. I'm also worried that down the line when I get an HD cable box that can only send 720p/1080i via HDMI, this problem will come back to bite me in the ass.

I experienced the exact same situation with the 201 initially with my Xbox. What I did was turn up sharpness to the max and turn on "edge enhancement" on high as well.
After a couple of weeks it seemed like the projector's optics "broke in" or something and I no longer needed the edge enhancement. I still have sharpness on 93, but the blurriness is no longer a problem.
Hope this helps.
Roger Lococco 04-25-10, 04:03 AM this recent Amazon review is the first I've read about a malfunctioning 201, although it's actually the power adapter and not the projector itself:
I bought this unit in January and took it to India. Worked great for a month. Then it started to shut-down by itself every now and then(heat issue?). Then one day it just stopped coming up. Took it to the local LG server center and it turns out that the power-adapter failed. They said they couldn't give me an adapter because the product was warranted in the US.
I call up the customer service and tell them what the problem was and the 1st guy takes down everything and asks me to fax a copy of the receipt and he will ship a replacement adapter. Two weeks and no word. Call back service and they don't have a record of the call and have to start over! In spite of telling them what the situation is, they just keep asking me to send the unit in for servicing! Gave up and swore not to buy another LG product.
I like the product thought the blacks are not really black. The video resolution is good enough for business presentations and SD video. The portability and design is nice...but then I have serious concerns about the reliability of the product. Given my customer service experience, I would hesitate to recommend it to anyone...there are equally good products on the market these days.

Thanks for the advice. I've been trying this for the past few days with the Xbox set to both 480p and 720p (over HDMI). The picture quality is pretty horrendous. I'm confused because I used to have a 5+ year old Sanyo SVGA (800x600) projector that was connected to the Xbox via component video and had a significantly better picture.
I wouldn't say its unplayable at this point, but its damn near close. If I can't figure this out within the week, it looks like I'll have to send it back. Any other advice, guys? I can't figure out how to get the XBox to output in 800x600 via the VGA cable, some Google searching has led me to understand that it is not possible. The issue seems to be when the projector has to scale, as it must have a poor scaling chip. Looks like I might be stuck...
MCaugusto 04-28-10, 06:52 AM SLCentral >>> Sorry if this may sound like a stupid question, but did you adjust the focus control to the exact distance/size from your screen ?
I remember when i first received my HS-201 i was very disappointed with the initial picture, but as soon as i adjusted focus, contrast, brightness, color, white balance and tint, things improved tremendously.
I have my unit connected to an Onkyo 886 processor set at 1080p output, thus forcing the HS-201 to downconvert to its native resolution, and whether watching dvds, cable or computer desktop, the picture is extremely sharp; My desktop, connected via its HDMI output, provides a picture on the HS-201 that appears to my eyes as sharp as the one displayed by my monitor at 1028x768.
What is the quality of video material sent from the Xbox as shown by your unit ? Did you select different output resolutions for video before even getting into gaming ? Did you check all output options available from the Xbox ? Do you have access to a PC with HDMI output that you could connect directly to your HS-201 and see what results you'd get ? Etc, etc ...

Thanks for your post Marcos. I've actually decided to send back the HS201 and just took delivery of the Optoma HD66 yesterday. Much happier with it, BTW, other than the limited bulb life.
I did use the focus knob to adjust to as close as focused as I possibly could. I used settings I found on this thread for contrast/brightness, etc. I don't have an A/V receiver, so each device is sending it out its own signal, but thats irrelevant. The 360 can be set to output in 480p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p. None of these settings made the quality to my liking, or even close to it. The PC looked good on 800x600, very good in fact, but once it went to 1024x768 or higher, text became too blurry to read - not OK with me.
Like I said, I've decided to move on to another model. I like the HS201, but for my needs the PQ just wasn't there. That, plus the lack of zoom, made it really impossible for my scenario.
I'm waiting for the hx300, but assume feature wise it's the same as the hs201. Do these guys have ATSC tuners? Will they process a HD signal from the cable line coming through the wall (not through a STB)? I couldn't find the manual for the 200/201 on LG's website.
kenshin2b 04-30-10, 12:39 PM No, neither hs201 and hx300 has ATSC tuner.
The best setup is to connect the pj to a reciever via hdmi, and all your Cable box/media player/game systems through the reciever.
Can anyone tell me about how this projector would work in a conference/training room with a wall of windows (and no blinds)? I've been asked to purchase a permanently mounted ceiling mounted projector and the LED technology sounds great in terms of not needing to worry about bulb replacement. But with the low lumens I'm thinking it won't work for me.
Also, where can I download an English manual for this thing? I tried the link from the 3rd page of this thread but had no luck. There's nothing about it on LG USA's site, and the LG chat rep pointed me to lgcommercial.com which has nothing about it either. It seems that Amazon is the only current vendor for it and LG doesn't even acknowledge that it exists on the US site! Frustrating.
Thanks for your help.

With regards to ambient lite...this performs best with little or no lite at all...though it is better then the 102G I have & am looking forward to the HX300's performance with respect to this as it has a higher lumen output.
Thanks for the reply. I saw the HS200 on projectorcentral but didn't look at it because I thought it was a completely different model. But the manual covers the HS201, so this will work. :)
Based on your input about the lighting it looks like I might have to look at something with a bulb, but at least I know now that the HS200 is the same thing. So thank you again.

I'am surprised,I can't see big difference in HS200G and HX300,just a little bit brighter (300 lumen's) and what all.Price is too high for this difference,I think I'll stay with my HS200G

I'am projecting my hs200g on 107 inch screen,pc text is great, you can read from any distance.
bruce banner 06-03-10, 12:10 PM Would it be best to set the resolution on PC to something like 1152 x 648(would the projector accept this?) to keep the 16:9 widescreen.. or does 720p look fine? I would think the further you go from the projector native resolution the blurrier it will look.
MCaugusto 06-10-10, 07:03 PM Guys, i found something interesting about my HS-201 that i think i should share with all of you.
What it's perhaps the only "gripe" i have on the HS-201 is the fact that sometimes when i first turn it on for my daily 10 hours "viewing sessions", the unit refuses to actually turn on and nothing shows onscreen until i shut it off and turn it on a second time, at which point it invariably comes on, so far.
Well, i now realize that when first turning the HS-201 on and pressing the button on the remote control, i need to keep pressing the button for approximately 4 seconds or so, and NOT just press it lightly and quickly release my finger off the button; Then the unit always comes on without me having to start the process a second time all over again.
So, in other words, it appears that the HS-201 demands that the user keep his/her finger pressing the "ON" button on the remote control for at least 4 seconds or so for the unit to actually come on as well as it should be always turned on last in the chain of components...
...And while we're on the subject, sometimes when i first turn on the unit the image appears all scrambled onscreen, and i found out that by simply changing the input selection on my A/V processor from HDMI to any other input and then back again to the correct HDMI input that i want displayed by the HS-201, the unit locks onto the selected input without any scrambled picture appearing; To be fair to the HS-201, i would ascribe such problem to the well-known "HDMI handshake" issue that has been reported as occurring often with different components, so in my case it could be happening due to interactions between HDMI inputs/outputs of my particular brand of A/V processor and the HDMI input of the HS-201.
Just a couple of observations and caveats concerning the HS-201 to any other owner/prospective buyer....

NOLAGPLZ 06-10-10, 07:12 PM Just for the record I don't have either of those issues. knock on wood.
jang790 06-11-10, 08:15 AM what kind of screen do you people use with this projector.
kenshin2b 06-11-10, 01:26 PM I am using the Epson Duet Dual AR (80" under 16:9 AR) 0.5 gain White Screen, it looks amazing.
OklahomaBear 06-11-10, 02:33 PM If you search YouTube for Jesse B. Anderson he has several video reviews of the iSival MP720b1 in action shot with a Flip HD camcorder.
I watched them in 720P HD and this little projector really rocks. Yes it is only 60 Lumens but in a completely dark room at about 80 inches it look great (according to the Flip HD video of it). He even pushed it up to about 110" and it still look fairly bright! The other concern is the 200:1 contrast but even there it looks pretty decent. Listen for $500.00 it looks like a great little projector and for someone who has a burned through a $2000.00 Sanyo PLV-Z3 including 2 bulb replacements @ around $220 each (OUCH) an actual 720P projector that has 30,000 LED hours for $500 sound pretty damn wonderful. I am definitely saving up to buy it!
Bravo, LG!
Dear Alexx1,
you definitely grabbed my attention by comparing favourably the HS201 to the HD65.
I'm waiting for the HX300G to be released and before pulling the trigger, I'd like to know your detailled impressions when comparing these two machines.
Could you comment further on the differences of perceived brightness, colour saturation, sharpness, contrast, etc...?
Also, what settings did you use on each machine: eco mode, cinema mode, etc...?
Thanks.
DrJo
jang790 06-15-10, 06:50 AM Alexx1 would be awesome if you could post pics of the hd65 & hs201 screenshots.
been wondering how big the 720p difference really is
krinkov 06-16-10, 10:36 AM I had a HS201 for a few days. Before that I had been running my Infocus X9 720p projector using it for HTPC,web surfing & PS3 gaming.
Although the HS201 looked ok for web surfing (text was clear) It didn't cut it for PS3 gaming or HD films compared to what I was used to with the X9. Gaming wise the resolution difference was a big loss as I play first person shooters (COD,Bad company2) & the resolution wasn't good enough for hitting targets far across the map. Blu-Ray & X264 files just didn't look as vibrant as a true 720P projector.
With that it was sold straight away & I went back to using a 720P projector. I think the HS201 is fine for TV viewing with SD or BBC iplayer but not quite good enough for any HD material.Pitty because of the massive bulb hours but for the quality difference I am prepared to replace a bulb every now & then.
I would wait for the slightly better panel resolution from the HS300.
paulstefano 06-20-10, 01:26 PM Can somebody help me with a screen size question?
I am running the HS201 with the following
1. Blue Ray Player and a Tivo via HDMI
2. a Nintendo Wii via Component.
The Blue Ray and Tivo fill up the screen at 16:9 perfectly. When I switch to the Wii, however, the screen suddenly becomes too Tall, and overlaps the screen.
Does anybody know what is going on? I have checked the settings for the projector and the Wii.
Why would the screen size suddenly change like that?
Thanks for your help.

What is the projector aspect ratio set to? Make sure it's not on "set by program"
Try with the remote control, the Quick Menu button (I think it's a red one), the first option there should be set to 16:9 if you want to have wide screen format.
paulstefano 06-20-10, 09:58 PM I figured it out, thanks. The component was set to 4:3.
I didn't realize there could be separate settings for each input. Problem Solved!
paulstefano 06-20-10, 10:00 PM What has everyone done with their power cords?
I currently have my projector mounted on the ceiling with the power receptable right behind. So I have this massive waste of cord length.
I only need about 3 inches of cord on either side.
Has anybody found a way to hide the cord, while mounting, or even better, found a shorter cord?
thanks again.
Paul
bobbyslav 06-20-10, 10:54 PM I figured it out, thanks. The component was set to 4:3.

Yeah, it remembers not just the aspect ratio for each individual input, but also the picture settings.

something like these:

MCaugusto 06-22-10, 07:59 PM Both the HS-201 and the HX300G have standard tripod mounts and therefore must be used with ceiling mounts that also use tripod mounts; Also, remember that when ceiling mounting either pj, the middle of the lens must be placed facing the top of the screen at its exact mid-point, so if your screen is located 30 inches below the ceiling, so must the projector.
Make sure you get a ceiling mount with an extension pole built-in that could be lowered by whatever amount you need, with some limitations of course...
I found this perfect ceiling mount for the HS-201/HX300G at Amazon for around $38, shipping included; It works perfectly for my ceiling drop-off of 24 inches.

paulstefano 06-24-10, 08:52 PM I was looking for a way to shorten my cable to clean up my celing mount. I decided to try to cut and splice it myself. When I did, there seems to be a short. When I plug in the adapter, I hear a clicking sound in the cable, and a whilstle in the power brick. I'm assuming it's fried.
So, I need a replacement. Can anybody recommend a universal power adapter, preferably at a brick and mortar store?
I found this.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003323BOO/ref=oss_product
But I'm not sure it will work.
How about the IGO series? They have a laptop wall charger that might work.
Could somebody help me please?
paulstefano 06-25-10, 08:28 PM Good News!
I found a suitable adapter, at Walmart even.
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Kensington-Wall-Ultra-Compact-NB-Power-Adapter/14525935
They had it in stock. I used the "Sony" tip and it works perfectly. Best part is the power "brick" is really small. Only about the size of an Iphone (which they use as a comparison on the box). Also, each cable is much smaller.
So, if you want to spend the dough, for a shorter/smaller/lighter power adapter, this is a good choice. Or if you are just an idiot and cut up your OEM cord, this would work too :)
MCaugusto 06-26-10, 07:43 AM Thanks paulstefano, that's always good to know....But did you really pay almost $88 for the AC adapter ? That's crazy amount of money to pay for such a widely available item, or so i would have considered.
The problem with getting AC adapters other than the manufacturer's is that they use different size tips, have polarity locations that are not standardized and their power supply can be universal or localized, so finding suitable replacements can be tricky.
afineman 06-26-10, 11:38 AM Greetings all
Well having the projector for more than 6 months, 3 feet above the carpet, with my dog always being with me, I figured it was time for a cleaning.
For those who haven't followed from the beginning, I am a very heavy user and rack up a lot of hours per week.
Took the 5 screws out, gently plied and Ta Da the cover was off and was very surprised at how little dust had accumulated ( unlike my 2 Infocus projectors that were ceiling mounted, can you say dust cloud:eek:)
in the 2 pictures there were the only 2 places a slight layer of dust was found (DHO, I should have taken before pictures) and as I thought about it, it's probably the way I run the projector.
Ecno most of the time Normal when watching a movie, and that coupled with the slow fan speed in these modes not many CFH of air move through this projector. Low air volume = Low dust levels.
On another subject "Power Supplies", there are industry standards for these connectors (size/polarity) Size is set by the amount of current (I think the sizes are in 3MM steps, don't quote me it has been many years)
The polarity, center is always positive and the outer shell is always negative. so as long as you get an equal rates supply (19 volts 4.74 amps) you can plug it in, I believe this is the exact replacement http://www.newark.com/xp-power/veh90ps19/psu-90w-external-energy-star/dp/67R9653
Have a great day
AFM
MCaugusto 06-26-10, 06:56 PM Wow ! Thanks once again, afineman for the pictures of your opened up HS-201 showing the dust accumulation; After scanning the pictures i thought to myself : dust ? What dust ? I can't hardly see any !...Which is great news...
I also have my unit sitting on a table about three feet above a carpeted room that i would describe as a medium-shedder, similar to your situation, and now i feel better realizing that it takes a lot of dust to mess up the HS-201.

Unfortunately, I did pay $88. I decided to do my "experiment" in cutting the cord to a shorter length the day before I was having a World Cup party. I planned to show off the Brand New Theater room. So, I had to splurge on the locally available option. As it turns out, however, it was a blessing, because that Kensington power brick is about the smallest I've seen on a Universal Adapter. :)
paulstefano 06-28-10, 09:51 PM So,
Now that I'm up and running, I just HAD to post a picture.
Here is my Hs201 in my 90% light controlled home theater room. I'm projecting on an 80 inch piece of Sintra (foam board) painted with Benjamin Moore Aura flat gray paint.
I have the projector set to "Normal" mode. This is from a Tivo HD, hooked up with HDMI at 1080i resolution. This is a scene from Ice Age II, the Age of Dinasaurs.
Took the pick with my Iphone 3G

paulstefano 07-02-10, 05:01 PM What about wii since it outputs at a lower resolution than 360 or ps3 ? Can anyone comment on using a wii with the HS201 ?
I'm using the HS201 with the Wii. I used the component to VGA adapter then used a coupler to connect to the Wii component cables. It works pretty well. Looks as god as anything else I've had the Wii hooked up to.
Mikey90 07-07-10, 06:32 AM Yeah it works great with the wii as well as the ps3. We played call of duty on a 80" screen which was awesome, the only obvious complaint is the lack of 1080p resolution which is not noticeable on the wii but it is when playing PS3 games. I'll probably be selling it soon and I'll get a 52" Plasma TV.

Does anyone on here with the projector have a case for it? If so, what are you using?
Thanks.
nandanmv 07-13-10, 10:41 PM I got this projector recently and been largely satisfied with it. I am projecting on a beige wall while I get a screen. The problem I have is that my eyes get strained quite a bit while watching. Is some one else also having this issue? Any ideas settings to decrease eye strain? (I have used the settings suggested in this thread earlier). Any ideas/suggestions is much appreciated.

Lower brightness?
MCaugusto 07-14-10, 12:15 AM Are you perhaps sitting so close to the screen to the point that you have to continuously dart your vision left > right / right > left > up / down, just to keep up with the action onscreen ?
That would certainly cause eye strain.
Are you using your HS-201 in an extremely dark "batcave" room with the unit's contrast control crancked up all the way up to the point that white images begin to "bloom" onscreen ? That may also cause eye strain.
Or are you referring to R/G/B flashes that occurr occasionally, specifically during low-contrast dark scenes with some white highlights (aka DLP "rainbows") which may cause some discomfort to the eyes ? I used to notice them a lot more when i first got my unit but now i hardly notice them any longer; Keep in mind that compared to single chip DLP projectors that use standard bulbs and color wheels, the HS-201 LEDs cycle on/off much/much faster, thus displaying much/much less "rainbows"...

kenshin2b 07-15-10, 06:34 PM For those who are curious about whether the Sony Dynaclear VPS-80DS 80 inch (2.1 gain) screen would make a difference with the hs201 under afternoon sunlight. Here are some pictures of my test...
Again, this shows dark (high gain) screen can help projectors with low lumens...
if you are in planning to do some movie/tv watching and gaming in the afternoon, this is the definately best option!

MCaugusto 07-16-10, 07:16 AM ...And could you please post some pics of the screen in action in a fully darkened environment ? Thanks
kenshin2b 07-16-10, 08:54 AM That's the one. It should be more of matte grey than matte black, certainly not matte white to me.
The price of this poorman Black Diamond at Electronic Expo (through Amazon) is certainly a steal (unless you need something bigger than 80 inches).
Marco, I will take some "night" shot tonight.

Ambient lite performance is extremely acceptable!
Controlled lite performance...even though not as noticable in the pix...is way better then the DIY. Naked eye viewing shows a crisper pic...whites are briter...blacks a sharper...detail pops out...missed alot veiwing on the DIY past 1/2 decade...overall...very satisfied with this C-note investment to enhance viewing quality in ambient lite.
Thanks for pictures.Your projector is LG 201G ???
kenshin2b 07-26-10, 01:32 PM SG, glad you are as happy as I am.
I think my only complain besides the screen material is a bit more fragile, is the height of the screen, I have noticed you have put the screen on top of two end tables. I guess if you have one of those low profile long TV stand, that would be perfect.
Another note to those who are contemplating about joining the Dynaclear camp, this screen is definately light and portable enough if you ever want to use it out door (but of course not under very windy and harsh condition, since it is very light, it can get destroy).
Also, you need a projector that is at least 50 ANSI lumens, I tried with one of those low lumens pocket LED pj, the image seems to be too dark...
I'm seriously considering buying this Sony Dynaclear screen. How is the viewing angle? Can one person be slighty off to the side and still see a good image? How does image sharpness compare to the epson? And is there any noticable hotspots etc..I currently have the Epson Accolade Duet 1.0 gain and like it exept when there is too much light in the room it gets washed out. Also my projector is only LED 70 lumens.. 70 lumes is bright enough on the Espon duet in good lighting conditions even at 80" for me, I am not even using it's full brighness (58 out of 100 brightness in calibration and 53 out of 100 contrast)and it's enough..Would the overall brightness be the same..less or more on my projector on this screen? Judging from your comparisons of the two screens the brightness seems similar, white levels in some shots looks even brighter on the Sony. Also my projector is projectiong at less than 20% angle to the screen which is what this sony screen is rated according to the spec (2.1 gain within certain projection angle) So brighness is maintained I guess due to the high gain of the sony dynaclear so I should be safe. My main reason for buying this is the improved blacks and being able to use it earlier in the day then I normally could..and hopefully a better picture..more pop to the overall color of the picture

Any chance you could reverse the positioning of the DynaClear and put it on the Right, closest side to the Window? Most every shot I see shows markedly higher illumination coming off the right screen wall/ceiling. Just a few daylight shots under those conditions would round out an otherwise very comprehensive photo essay.
What was/is your DIY Screen? For certain, the Sony can easily trump it ambient-light wise, that much is obvious. Especially since the DIY seems to be a Matte White surface of some sort.
Interesting little PJ. No zoom....fixed focal length w/only 2000:1 CR so the dark Sony DC makes it look a lot better than it would otherwise.
Next to last question: Was the PJ calibrated to the much lighter DIY screen, or the new Sony DC?
Last question coming: With the 201, throw distance for 80" would be just at 8' w/9 foot lamberts off a Matte White 1.0 gain screen. Hard to fathom you ever really tried to watch much content in day time ambient light with this PJ on the DIY screen? So...what PJ did you used to employ those last 4-5 years?
MCaugusto 07-26-10, 11:06 PM Well, since almost everyone is posting pics of their HS-201 in action i decided to follow suit by posting some pics of my own, as projected onto a high-gain screen...
BTW, these pictures don't do full justice to the projector's actual onscreen image; They were taken with a cheap, 4 year old 3MP camera.
SG's HDHTPC 07-27-10, 04:43 AM Hi Yais...yes...above pix are with my LG HS201...
Hi kenshin2b...very pleased...yep..fragile...will figure out a way to afix it to stiffer backing...if so...will pickup another for my vaca setup...
Hi Heeman...viewing angle is smaller then the DIY...best is straight on with PJ overhead or in front (tabletop)...
Hi MississippiMan...was on the screen section this past weekend reading the 5 page Sony Dynaclear thread...i have considered this & will check into it next weekend with a left/rite set o pix...the DIY screen is RocLon Blackout Cloth i bought from Walmart 6 years ago & fabbed a large screen for the basement HT...basically rotate this screen 90 degrees...add the same next to it & that was the size...after a year or two, the Batcave syndrom set in, so i cut it in 1/2 & made 2 84" diag screens as you see in the pix...the other is at my girlfriends condo living room. Its the cloth side which is a matte finish...pj is outta the box set to vivid & presentation...daytime viewing was in lite controlled ie room darkening blinds on rite (front & sunside of house) until the dynaclear...
PJ #1...Benq PB6200...#2 Optoma HD73 (both functional but mothballed)...#3 LG HS102(vaca PJ)...#4 LG HS201...#5 Samsung SP-F10M which i just got last week & am extremely pleased with its ambient lite performance, can't wait to get it back from samsung & do a DIY/Dynaclear comparison...& I picked up a Home Cinema Pro HD850 LED for my girlfriends condo this past spring...which i'll be taking this screen over to see what it can do there with 2 skylites over the screen...anyway...thanx for taking an interest...
Hey Marcos...glad to hear from you...pix look good...agreed...need to experience this with 'naked eye'...&... as i've stated on my various threads...fotography is not my forte....

Directly from EBAY page...."I never removed the plastic covering". I had one of these. I know what 'plastic covering' he's talking about. It's a close fitting piece of plastic that goes over the top of the projector and around one of the sides-and COVERS A VENT. HMMMM.....YOU THINK IT OVERHEATED???? (some people are so ignorant sometimes)
There's even a warning to remove the plastic before use.
afineman 08-24-10, 12:32 PM Greetings all
I have a question, I copied the below statement from Wikipedia is this accurate?
The method for measuring ANSI lumens is defined in the IT7.215 document which was created in 1992. First the projector is set up to display an image in a room at a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius. The brightness and contrast of the projector are adjusted so that on a full white field, it is possible to distinguish between a 5% screen area block of 95% peak white, and two identically sized 100% and 90% peak white boxes at the center of the white field. The light output is then measured on a full white field at nine specific locations around the screen and averaged. This average is then multiplied by the screen area to give the brightness of the projector in "ANSI lumens".[6]
If so, I now understand why I perceived my colors to be far superior on my 201 than my last 2 projectors (infocus X1 and Infocus IN26) As I type this light bulbs are going off, and generating more questions.
Allow me to babble a bit, if that is the measurement system, then on a bulb projector your measuring white light coming through the clear (and I suspect the lowest loss segment) segment on the color wheel.
But if you went to a pure red screen then the DLP will only reflect when the red segment of the color wheel is in front the light pipe, depending on how mush loss there is converting the white light to red that could change the lumens drastically.
Another bulb that just went off is (if I remember correctly) the color wheel has 4 or 5 segments so if you’re displaying pure red (or any color) then it only has a 20-25%duty cycle.
Yet with the LED a pure red screen is 100% duty cycle and I’ll end this babble with 1 last thought.
If the above measurement is truly the way it is done then, on a bulb projector the white light passes through the clear segment and will give you the highest reading. If this method is used on an LED projector wouldn’t it be the lowest lumen output (reasoning, white is not a native color and is a combo of modulated LEDs).
Am I thinking about this the correct way or am I talking out the wrong orifice?
Brent
Good HT projectors don't have a white segment.
For all others, it is generally turned off.
I don't think you understand fully the way the DLP chips work when referring to duty cycle. It would be the same with a color wheel as with an LED... unless you go 3 chip, you won't have 100% for each color.
Hobbygamer27 10-03-10, 09:21 AM I just wanna report, I got the HS200G in Germany and it makes a 130" sceen.
Well I'm just using 100" and its still not on maximum Focus.
Does Anyone have Chromatic Abberation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromatic_Abberation), because mine has it.
mrkerala 10-28-10, 09:01 PM ok finally I pulled the trigger on this puppy yesterday and will be receiving it tomorrow. Also bought the 100IN Diagonal Accuscreens HDtv Manual Wall Ceiling 49X87IN
by Draper and Videosecu 6" Universal Pan Tilt Video Camera Mounting Bracket with Ceiling Clip 1BO. I have the following questions for you the experts in this forum
1. I have denon 1910 receiver which has got only 1 hdmi out so I bought the 1 to 2 splitter from mono, will this degrade the quality?
2. My living room is almost 20ft, and I was planning to mount the projector @ 18ft or so from the roof. Will that make 100in screen full? Will that reduce the picture quality?
3. Got a 30% off coupon from square trade warranty and they agreed to provide 3 yr extended warranty for $54usd, is it worth taking it?
4. Can I run 35ft of HDMI cable from the receiver to the projector?
Thanks for your help in advance
NOLAGPLZ 10-29-10, 11:00 AM HDMI is Digital, either you have a picture or you don't.
It doesn't have a zoom lens, so you will need to put it about 11' from the screen.
Do you have lots of bad luck with electronics in the first year?
Yes, i am using a 50' one for my 201.
Hi All,
Firstly - thanks to all the posters - my decision to buy the HS201 was based on all the positive comments and screen pictures. I too am amazed with the colors from this brilliant device - I love watching movies with it (most are divx ~600x300 so the resolution is just fine).
I recently started using the HDMI input - it's clearly better than VGA which I had used initially.
I saw a post describing heat output at 80 to 90 degrees F (touching or a few cm away). Mine seems hotter. In fact, two of the vanes on the front cooling output seems to have bent slightly (maybe I touched it while it was still hot). I have been running it mostly in Normal or Eco mode. After use the underside feels really hot.
How can I know if there is some cooling issue?
Thanks
Grant
mrkerala 10-31-10, 08:32 PM Ok mounted my projector and screen. I have one open issue to solve. My Denon 1910 & hdmi 1 to 2 output splitter(one that I bought from Monoproce) is not working properly. If I wanted to switch from Projector to LCD TV, I've to power off my Projector and either remove the plug or turn off the surge protector switch and wait for few seconds before I turn on my TV.

My Harmony One remote is on its way. Bought the wire organizer etc, that is going to be the next weekend project. Also I've a quick question for experts, is it ok to keep the power adaptor(brick) on top of the projector? I've not rested that on the projector, I've tied it to the mounting post.
Convincing my wife that we should get a new credenza too ;)
bobbyslav 11-02-10, 11:01 AM Very cool set up! I don't think the power brick is a problem where you have it. Just curious... it looks like you have plenty of space in the room, why didn't you put the projector a little further back, to fill up the entire screen?
mrkerala 11-03-10, 01:34 AM Thanks Bobbyslav! Some how I felt that quality of pic was not that sharp when it was full screen.
mrkerala 11-11-10, 02:55 PM OK the following problem is resolved now
My Denon 1910 & hdmi 1 to 2 output splitter(one that I bought from Monoproce) is not working properly. If I wanted to switch from Projector to LCD TV, I've to power off my Projector and either remove the plug or turn off the surge protector switch and wait for few seconds before I turn on my TV
First I tried the powered switch from Amazon for $29 and it did not work, waste of time.
Bought the powered 1 to 2 HDMI out switch from Monoprice and now it works perfectly. (again it was proved that you get what you pay for ;). Bought 4,1.5ft hdmi cables to organize cable management. Now its all good to go. Just waitin for the new credenza:).
Also Monoprice took the old splitter back without any restocking fees.

I'll start off again by saying how thrilled I am with the LG - great colors, small, quiet - I love watching movies with it!
In another post I mentioned the heating issue - here is a pic of the front vanes that seem to have been bent:
http://i1192.photobucket.com/albums/aa323/gf22534/LG%20HS201/LGHS201dentedvanes.jpg
I don't think there is any issue here - I must have pressed too hard when packing it away after use.
I wanted to confirm the difference between VGA and HDMI (obvious I know but it's the engineer in me) so I tried this 800x600 test screen:
http://i1192.photobucket.com/albums/aa323/gf22534/LG%20HS201/LGHS201800x600pixeltestgraphic-HDMI.jpg
It's not out of focus - this is a camera with no flash issue...
This is the square on the right using HDMI:
http://i1192.photobucket.com/albums/aa323/gf22534/LG%20HS201/LGHS201800x600pixeltestgraphiczoomonsquare-HDMI.jpg
And this is the same square with VGA:
http://i1192.photobucket.com/albums/aa323/gf22534/LG%20HS201/LGHS201800x600pixeltestgraphiczoomonsquare-VGA.jpg
As expected the HDMI is much sharper. These photos are taken with about an 85" screen and I was standing against the wall (screen). In normal use you don't seen the pixels like this (unless you watch movies from an inch away).
There are noticeable green and pink tinges on the edges visible at this very close distance - what causes this? Can it be reduced?
GF
JeffBurright 11-18-10, 10:52 PM Hey all,
I've looked all over the place trying to find out why my HS201 now randomly shuts itself off or worse, won't even get enough power to turn on the menu button lights. I've contacted LG once so far and they just told me to do a hard reset of the system (hold the power button for 30 seconds with the unit unplugged), which seemed to work for a while, but the problem has reappeared and makes this projector unusable. A large disappointment after 6 months of use. The bulb seems to be outlasting the electronics by far.
There's a faint crackling noise when I plug the adapter into the projector, which makes me suspect I may have a similar adapter or power supply defect like the other gentleman who posted on here. I'm loath to buy a new power supply though when the problem could be in the projector itself. Has anyone else had this kind of experience, and is there any light you can shed on what's happening?
Thanks,
Jeff
afineman 11-27-10, 07:34 PM Greetings All
Well I was going to wait for my 1 year anniversary to post this but I am bored and figured I'd just do it now. Just a reminder of where I've come from so these statements can be put in proper context.
I started with a Infocus X1, DIY 5X6 home made screen, and Teac 5:1 surround system and a DVD player. 3 bulbs and 3 years later the color wheel failed on the X1 so I went to an Infocus IN26 and everything else stayed the same . 2 bulbs and 2.5 years later the plastic focus lens (light from color wheel through lens to bending mirror that goes to the DLP chip) started to melt causing dark spot in center of image.
Being sick of bulb cost/color wheel and knowing the advancements in LED technology I started searching, that search led me to this forum and the LG HS 201. My original intent was to buy an OK LED projector until LEDs become the norm, it was never my intent to take the journey I have taken this past year. I blame this forum for pointing me down that path of enhancements/cost, allow me to give you a history of the journey taken.
In early December of 09 I got my projector, using my DVD player in component mode, projected my first movie image and was blown away (and still very impressed today, remember where I'm coming from). I was very pleased with the way my movies played and how well my computer was displayed, but not happy I had to use the component for the computer and composite for the for the DVDs, so I went and got a DVI to HDMI cable.
component to HDMI made a big difference, that difference is what started me on the “OOHH what else can I do to make the image better” effort, that is what started me down the rabbit hole.
With in weeks I had on order a DaLite High power screen, this was an improvement and I said “What next”.
The love seat recliner I was using wore out so did I replace it, yes but with home theater recliners (I'm happy to report I sleep just as well in these as I did on the love seat) then I said “What next”.
I cut the cord (canceled cable) 2 years ago, I kept reading everyone’s boast about Netflix and its streaming so I re-activated my account (I use to pay $21.99 a month now it is $8.99) and am in heaven, between Netflix, Hulu, Fancast, and network websites I can see what ever I want when ever I want, so whats next.
I read (kinda to my surprise) the new Blue Ray players could stream from Netflix, everyone seemed to claim the video image was better, also it was said they made DVDs look better too. I get the LG BD 550 and WOW everyone was correct, EXCEPT, I would have to got back to component input for my computer (only 1 HDMI input on the projector), this was unacceptable so what's next.
At first I was thinking about a HDMI switch then it dawned on me, the new player has 7:1 sound and I only had a 5:1 receiver, so a quick search later I see an Onkyo 5300 HTIB, 7:1 capable with 4 HDMI inputs and 1 output, problem solved what's next.
**NOTE I am NOT endorsing the 5300, I have had some problems (can be read on the HTIB thread) and because of “My” problems “I” can NOT recommend this to anyone:mad:.
I decided (once the receiver came back) I would change my home theater arrangement to make the 7:1 sound system work in the room I was using (power connections, LAN connections, and speaker wires).
So when the receiver came back I went to work and 10 hours later it was complete, all wires were run, all network connections made, all speakers were hung, computer dust cleared out and screen/seating was relocated. I powered things up and my computer goes POOF :eek:causing the room to echo with colorful metaphors, I called it a night. Actually not really, I was done working and the drinking began, I also watched my first Blue Ray movie (Avatar) with the 7:1 system and was quit impresses.
For the last 30 years I have built/assembled my own computer (remember the Sinclare Z80 basic computer in a kit in 82?) so I set out to research what is current and as usual I could get a 2x speed computer for ½ cost of last computer and had a few surprises along the way.
I normally don’t use on board sound/video but advances has made me change that, This mother board has 7:1 sound, ATI video with 512 meg memory and a single HDMI output for both in a HTPC case that is perfect (actually the best case I've ever used). I only hesitated because this case only used ½ height cards meaning the ATI HDTV card I bought years ago is useless.
In the end it became a 2.7 Ghz AMD processor, with 4 gig of memory (512 Meg for video) with a $30 USB HDTV stick that blows away my ATI card and 1.5 T-bites of hard drives, because I had the hard drives and DVD/CD player/burner it only cost $270 for everything.
During this transformation the LG HS201has been the only projector used and I can say this year has been the most (hours) I have ever used a projector, I feel comfortable in saying it has already saved me the cost of a bulb (½ the cost of the projector never mind the electrical savings).
I chose not to join the group that jumped to the HX300, in the end I didn't need more light output (I am very satisfied with the output of the 201, maybe my room has a lot to do with this), I want true 720P and figure we are only about a year away from that.
So what is the moral of this story, the image this projector produced impressed me so much I had to see how far I could take it. Granted, people who are years ahead of me (upgrade wise) will look at the the following pictures and (rightfully so) say their 1080P bulb projector blows away my 800 X 600 LED projector. I can say for a fact this projector blows away my first 2 projectors in color, contrast, noise, heat, expense (electricity/bulb cost) so anyone who comes from the same back ground as I did will be pleased with this/the HX300.
Now for the pictures (OOHH my first impressions can be found in the first 2-8 pages of this thread) The first is the DVD of Nurse Jacky opening scene, the next 2 are HDTV sticks of the same picture (different zoom on camera), and the 2 after that are a Blue Ray of the same image using different zooms.
Thanks for reading

rioeire 11-29-10, 03:59 PM anybody has been able to compare this PJ with the Acer K11 , basically same specs 200 lumens 2000 contrast and 800x600 with hdmi, but the acer is smaller
thx
scolfaro 11-30-10, 01:52 PM yes, i tried this in my own thread, and now i'll give my final shot here...
HOW DO THESE BUDGET LED PROJECTORS FARE UP AGAINST SIMILARLY PRICED REGULAR BULBED ONES (as regards usability and picture quality in a non-controlled light environment)?
Do the 2.5000 ANSI Lumens from regular bulbed ones mean a big difference against the 200 ANSI Lumens from these?
How do the LG HS201 stack up against the Acer K11?
Thank you.
benjimatt 11-30-10, 02:14 PM Im sure the hs201 and the acer k11 are super similar when looking at the picture. I picked the acer k11 because it had a tad bit more resolution and because it was like 100 dollars cheaper brand new. IM happy so far. But i feel that you will be happy with either of these projectors.
rioeire 11-30-10, 03:02 PM yeah they are sure pretty similar, but the LG will give you a bigger screen at the same distance (projectorcentral)
92" for 10 feet (3 meters)
70" for 10 feet

The pure led stuff is just not bright enough.yes there is a big difference.Really the only upside ever was no bulbs.
A good comparison.

There is a lot of fanboi love that gos on in the led threads so BEWARE!;)
rioeire 11-30-10, 03:39 PM I have no doubt a HT Pj is much better than this LG , but there are many good things about it
But:
I dont want to spend 1000 dollars on a 1080p Pj not yet, I dont want to change the bulb in 2 years (i am going to use it a lot), Im going to mainly watch DVD and some BD and ps3.. sure but ocasionally and in dark enviroment
It is small so I can take more advantage of my small room, 10 ft is the top distance I can get from lens to screen, a normal PJ will take more space coz the are bigger.
eat meat 11-30-10, 03:53 PM its small;)
scolfaro 12-01-10, 07:28 AM My, i guess i was just asking in the wrong place then ;)
Thank you guys!
Now the other thing, and i guess this might be a bit too theoretical, but the idea of a "color wheel" sounds so stupid to me... Is not having a color wheel worth anything by itself, for example, preventing rainbow effect and the likes??
afineman 12-20-10, 11:40 AM Yep the heading says it all
1 year and 14 days after I get it, it dies.
Wife and I don't like to watch shows weekly, so every once in a while (when we have time) we will veg in the chairs and watch an entire season.
We were into season 3 episode 3 of the Tutors (after watching all 10 of season 2) and NOTHING it goes blank, no sound to indicate something blew, just went blank.
Symptoms it has now, power LED about 1/10th its brightness. When power supply is unplugged for a while then plugged in all LED (on control panel) flash momentary (if I remember correctly this is normal) the the power LED is 1/10th.
I thought it may be power supply but no (19 volts plugged in into projector), the projector is gone.
I am going to write LG and see if they may still warranty it, but I doubt it.
A lot of good 30K hours LED do when the rest of the electronics die @ 3,000 hours.
I'll let you all know what develops

UPDATE:
Just got off the phone with LG, they say they will decide in a day or 2 if they will cover it under warranty.
If not I have a plans for a new projector, at least this on has a 3 year warranty.

Well I got this E-mail from LG
please reply with the www.amazon.com confirmation order.. we will cover under warranty if
1 its less than 1 month out of the warranty
2 since its from amazon.com it must be sold from either amazon.com directly or one of amazon marketplace vendors that are autorized lg vendors as tiger direct marketplace in amazon or etc
What I didn't realize was this projector only comes with a 90 labor warranty, so it is still going to cost me $70 but that's a lot cheaper than a bulb.
I'll update when returned

Roger Lococco 12-23-10, 10:11 PM It will be interesting if other 201 owners report similar failures soon...
Hobbygamer27 12-26-10, 06:39 AM Well I got the HS200G in Germany and I got a little problem:
I'm using now the PJ 6 or 7 months for watching TV and Movies from PC every day more or less 3 hours.
Now I am very angry and convinced, that the Focus and the lighttunnel in this pj are not safed from rubbish in the air: Mine got a very short hair on the DLP.
I pressed simply blank, and watched in the lens. The big problem is:
The PJ has much lenses (3 or more inside) so the blonde hair inside is reflecting and produces 2 lighter clouds on the sceen which are negative in darker movie scenes.
I have to hope now, that this will go away by itself, because I do not wanna send it back to LG, because I will get a new which has not as much Focus Space as mine.
Mine makes 130" (january 2010) and another I know and I saw live makes luckily 100" (april 2010).

I have to give LG an Atta Boy, Even though the 90 day labor warranty expired 9 months ago they are going to wave the $69 Labor charge.
Just today alone, 3 E-Mails went between me and the LG rep, When I was informed today that all charges are being waved, I sent off an E-mail saying the check was put in the mail this morning, the responas was, "We'll just send it back to you".
Now I don't have the check or the projector back yet but I am impressed with their customer service.
After the 201 died (and before the good expirence) I was looking for my next projector (staying away from LG) but I'll tell you, the moment they come out with a true 720P I would buy another LG product in a heart beat.
The expirence so far

After the 201 died (and before the good expirence) I was looking for my next projector (staying away from LG) but I'll tell you, the moment they come out with a true 720P I would buy another LG product in a heart beat.
The expirence so far

Hobbygamer27 01-06-11, 07:17 AM Well I got the HS200G in Germany and I got a little problem:
Well I fixed the problem by myself.
At first, I unscrewed the projector, and watched, where there is the place where seems to be the DLP. The answere: On the backside, beside the Connecction Panel, where are litte Fan grills. Behind these grills there is a Heatsink Screwed with 4 screws, I unscrewed them.
So now you're holding a board with attached DLP chip in your hand. This board is connected to a ribbon cable to the mainboard of the projector.
I had to be Carefully because of that special cable. Then I blewed a short bit against my dlp, and the fking hair was away.
Now I really enjoy again watching film and TV.

Well it was dropped off @ FedX 12/28/10, LG got it 1/4/11 and at 11:30AM my door bell rang. it was fixed (same projector, it was a quick fix, no document as to what was the problem, it must be a common one).
Regardless, I got the projector back, works fine, no check yet (but I really don't care about that) and life is back to normal.
This will hold me over until a true 720P (LED) projector comes out from LG.
As I've said before, I am rather impressed with LG and how they handled my situation, they earned them selves an eager customer for their next generation of LED projectors.
Wanted to let you all know how things worked out

On the spec front, the LG HW300T has a 1200 x 800 resolution, 250 ANSI lumens brightness, 2,000:1 contrast ratio and HDMI socket.
http://ces2011.techradar.com/2011/01/lg-hw300t-projector-dlna-broadband-and-more/
Is this HW300T based on the new 1280x720 chip from TI that was announced for pico projectors? If so, what happened to 80 of the 1280 horizontal pixels?
Pesticide 01-09-11, 01:08 PM Dear owners of this device,
I have been looking to buy my first projecter and this one as caught my eye thx to all the great pics and information this forum and you people have provided. The only concern i have is its age. But the age has a benefit, low price. I can get this model for around 330 euros. The hx300 model cost almost double 560 euros as far as i can find it in european stores and i dont think it is worth that much money to upgrade for smal increase in light and res.
I will project on a white wall that has little airbubbles (riffled?) in it in a room with one 60 wat bulb in the background (same lightsource as mrkerala pictures show, thx for those they look awesome), that I dont mind turning off to watch a movie but would prefer to not watch in total darkness.
Is this device for my needs and room still a good choice, or should i look for alternative newer generation led/regular bulb version for my amateur gaming and dvd movie/series purposes in the 500 euro range. This news from ces DLP 1280x800, led & 3D for $499,in april and may 2011 looks nice but then again half a year of waiting probably before we see it in europe and then i can sell this one without to much loss i guess :) .
afineman 01-15-11, 05:29 PM Greetings ALL
Well I sent the "Labor" check prior to sending the projector, and before I found out they also waved the "Labor" fee.
Well the check was returned today.
LG did everything they said they would, I made a comment in a previous post that they had earned a customer eagerly awaiting the new 720P projector, but for $499 (MSRP) the Vivitek Qumi with 2,500 ratio, 300 lumen and 1280X800 Res has peeked my interest.
Enjoy the games ALL

teac4010 07-21-11, 05:24 AM After a few weeks of use, my 201 is revealing some interesting to me Direct TV HD channel differences. All HD channels are not the same.
My screen size is about 7ft horizontal (the max size my 201 will focus) and I use the "Set by Program" to establish final screen aspect ratio. Cycling through the HD network channels it is clear that most are not 1080.
Question, will all network channels eventually have full 1080 content?
In the meantime, do I need the next generation 1080 pj?
Did I mention how well my 201 projects DVD's?

want to mount it on the Ceiling.
is it a good idea to hang it upside down using tripod mount Hole.
will this hold it?

Natalie35 08-14-11, 07:34 PM Hello
I would appreciate if someone could help me regarding to some questions I have about the LG HS201 and the LG HX300 pj.
I am new to pj, so I don't really have many references.
I need to buy a pj for a specific use. I am an artist and will be using it to project still images so that I can trace them onto a canvas. This means that I will be near (more or less 12 inches) the canvas/projected image, that will be big (around 79 inches)
My question is: at that distance (12 inches) will I see pixels? If so, will the image still be discernible?
Another question: I read somewhere that the HS 201 doesn't hold still an image for more than 5 minutes and then returns to the menu. For my purposes i need to project a single image/jpeg for hours, if it will only allow 5 m its a problem. Is this true? And if so, do all the rest of LED pj do the same?
My last question: For my needs is it worth spending the extra cash on the HX300 for a bit more resolution and lumens? Or the HS201 will do the job just fine?
NOTE: I do know that the LG HS201 is the same as the specially marketed for artists Artograph Digital Art Projector LED200, but the last one is pricier and I don't see the point, if it's basically the same product.
Thank you in advance for your help
Roger Lococco 08-15-11, 08:02 AM Natalie, in this screenshot from afineman, he's projecting a 92'' image, although it's blocky up close, you will still definitely be able see what you're tracing.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/45307625@N02/4199216665/in/photostream/
The Artograph has grids which as you know will aid in correctly proportioned drawings, but not worth the extra cash over the regular 201, imho.
It's worth the extra money to get a brighter higher res projector because you'll be using it for entertainment as well.
Someone that actually owns a 201 will have to chime in about the possible 5 minute limit in displaying images.
donaldk 08-15-11, 10:45 AM Did he turn off that font sharpening or whatever it was called in windows?
Those reds, in the uniform picture, yummie. A shame they apparently have to be comprimised in especialy that Viewsonic W-500 for lightoutput.
afineman 08-15-11, 03:37 PM 2 things to add :D
This is a single pixel resolution picture http://www.flickr.com/photos/45307625@N02/4199217597/in/photostream/ I was showing the difference between connection quality (VGA vs DVI, DVI was the single pixel shot)
Display the picture via your laptop/desktop and it will stay on as long as you want.

razageorge 09-13-11, 06:38 PM Hi folks,
I have the HS200 I bought at the PX on base in Europe. I have it on HDMI through the computer but the picture is still blurry set at:
10 feet from wall and only a 75 inch picture on the wall.
The focus ring is maxed out and I've tried all sorts of different settings. I also bought a 84" screen today but same problem.
Any ideas? Thanks.
ps, I have an older lcd projector that throws a great picture set at a farther distance.
afineman 09-13-11, 07:00 PM razageorge
I have a few suggestions
1: Set the computer to 800 X 600 (native res, of the projector) if it doesn't get better go to 2
2: Projector needs to be exactly in the center of the screen with the center of the lens aligned with the bottom of of the screen (top if roof mounted).
3: Any keystone will cause what appears to be a focus issue, make sure it is 0.
Check page 2-8 here (I've posted a lot of pictures), this should give you an idea what you can expect.
Or, maybe it is a bad unit (if the above suggestions don't work)
Hope it helps

afineman 09-17-11, 01:33 PM Well:(
After 22 months in service (and close to 6000 hours on time) my 201 I think has bought the farm for the 2nd and last time.
While I was watching last night I noticed the image flicker a few times then all green is gone, blue is ok but the red is flickering.
Here is a very short video of the problem http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3SWn9k0IW4 you can see the blue LED is on, next to is is where the green is (not working) and you can see the flickering red.
In the 2 pictures are 1: still of the light path 2: a burned connector. the burned connector (this is for 1 of the LEDs), this may be all of the problems, but I won't know till Monday (I have the tools/supplies needed at work to repair this), I will remove the connector all together and solder the wires directly on the board.
I'll let you know

And if you are what will it cover? (a new projector?)
That's still an amazing amount of hours, I wonder how much $$$ it would have cost on a bulb based projector.
afineman 09-17-11, 04:54 PM Hey All
In December of 09 I got this projector, for me it was love at first sight (2 prior projectors were Infocus X1 then IN 26, for prospective). each projector had bulb cost of approximately $275-300, in each case I got 2,800 to 3,200 hours before they blew. I am a VERY heavy user (all video content comes via a projector).
Both prior projectors died around the same numbers of hours (X1 color wheel, IN26 melted lens), so, not only did I incur the bulb cost, I had the projector replacement cost as well.
Am I disappointed, yes, but am I ahead $ wise, YES, not only did I not have the cost of 2 bulbs (this covers the HS 201 cost), the HS 201 only drew 50 Watts for 6,000 hours vs the others (180 Watts + 220 watts) so some pocket change was saved here as well.
I've been wanting to upgrade (tried the Qumi, but returned for focus reasons), I really want the Acer K330 but not sure when the US release will be. May try the Optma (I may have no choice, wife is unhappy about watching her shows on a small screen (I run 110 inch currently)).
Regardless, this HS 201 has served me well (and I may still be able to bring it back to life) and have no regrets, after 6,000 hours I only have projector replacement cost not 2 bulbs + projector.
I still made out in the end and my new motto is now "What Next"

Roger Lococco 09-18-11, 10:14 AM unfortunately these leds have a long way to go in terms of reliability, this 201 died in only 2 years, some Qumi's arrive with doa red leds, and an Acer K11 lost 50% of it's brightness after a relatively short time.
Imagine how pissed owners of those extremely expensive led high end projectors would be if that happened.
PoisonWolf 09-18-11, 11:22 AM If that's the case, then I'm afraid it is possible that the new rounds of Optoma/Acers/NEC/Viewsonic might not even live as long as your HS201. Simply because these LEDs are driven harder. Despite cooling etc, the more a piece of electronic is asked to run at its peak capacity, its overall lifespan will reduce.
Keep that thought in mind. =)

I never thought the lg was much of a value at 500$ when you ad in brightness and other features like zoom.
PoisonWolf 09-18-11, 01:48 PM "peak capacity" or "driven harder"? These pjs are well within posted spec.
Take two identical LEDs. Run each of them for 8 consecutive hours a day. Run one in eco-mode, the other in Presentation mode. Ensure that both are running in the same ambient temperatures.
Tell me which PJ will fail first. The same applies to two identical computer fans with specifications of 3000 RPM. Run one for 20 hours a day at 1000 RPM whilst the other at 3000 RPM. Despite the specification claiming up to 60000 hours of use, the one being asked to run at 3000 RPM will fail first every single time.
That's what I mean by running at "peak capacity" or "driven harder".
It might not be the case that it's due to "driving" (or running it at specifications) the LEDs harder per se, but it is likely due to the heat (i.e., as a result of driving a higher brightness or for prolonged sessions). The general rule of thumb is that heat shortens the lifespans of all electronics. Also, have you cleaned it out after every 1000 hours of use? Like a can of air? I'd imagine that there would be a tonne of dust in there after the 4000 hour mark. Lawl.
Thus, the reason why I adopt the same mentality is that if the PT-54 chipset is being used in this round of LED so-called "HD" PJs, whilst being driven harder (relatively to previous PT-54 PJs running at 200 ~ 300 lumens) to get the reported 500-lumens specifications....there is more heat being produced in these PJs. Greater heat results in shorter lifespan...relative to other PJs that use the same chipset but are driving a lower reported lumens specification.
Basically, I believe everyone here knew that we'd never reach anywhere close to that 20000 hour led life. However, 6000 hours is well below the 20000 mark. One would expect to reach at least 10000 hours before it failed. Even the fans in these things are likely to have up to 30000 hours of life.
The question is, afineman, at what setting do you typically run your projector? And for how long in a day do you run your projector? and lastly, what's the temperature like in the environment in which you typically use your projector?
afineman 09-18-11, 04:43 PM PoisonWolf
I work 4 days a week so on those work days the projector comes on @ 6 Pm and off between 11 Pm to 1 Am. on my 3 days off the projector is turned on any where between 4 Am to 9 Am (insomina) and turned off anywhere from 1 Am to 6 Am.
Because I was curious as to how long these projectors would last (I'm an Engineer in the equipment/electronics field) I would never shut it off once turned on for the day.
I also take 5 weeks vacation a year (and in those last 2 years I have not traveled, sleeping late and roiling out of bed @ will can be a vacation all un-to it's self)
I only state the above to reinforce my 6,000 hour statement, yet there is 1 thing you said that perks up my ears.
For the time I've used the HS 201, it was always in "Normal" mode, yet the connector I posted in that picture (burned/melted/carbonized), was the picture of the connector going to the green LED and obviously time/current was the cause of this failure.
It is my belief this connector failure is the root cause (this carbonized connector may have caused other failures as well, a cascading effect) and I would suggest to other 201 owners to open and re-seat these connections (unplug and then plug back in).
My projector failure was not a semiconductor failure, I believe it was a mechanical failure (under rated electrical connection) similar to a color wheel failure/fan failure/plastic lens failure.
I look at it this way, I got 6,000 hours of GOOD projector usage form the lg for $499, that equals 22 months @ A $08.31 per hour, anyone can do their own math but my cost per hour is very low.
I have more to say (I've been known to write books in posts) but I'll stop here, do the math your self, they may not last the 20-30 K hours but the cost per Hr is still less than any bulb based projector out there (I believe).
Just my opinion
AFM
Looking at the preliminary data sheet for the PT-54 they list a median lifetime of 120,000 hours. They list the Maximum Operating Junction Temperature Max Tmax as red=80, green=130 and blue=120 Celcius. So it seems green runs the hottest, maybe that played into its failure. I'm wondering, that since you are going to repair this yourself, if it is not too hard, are you going to remove the LED and check the thermal paste between it and the heatsink? It has been a long time issue with many PC motherboard manufacturers to skimp on thermal paste. Many users remove the north and south bridge chips immediately and apply their own thermal paste. If you were to find it to be inadequate, others may be well advised to effect a preemptive repair to increase the likelyness for longevity. http://www.sonic.net/~jayrob/Phlatlight%20Datasheet.pdf Perhaps you should solder a thermal fuse inline while your at it.

afineman 10-13-11, 12:52 PM Greetings All
I have been doing some failure annalist on my LG HS201 that has died after about 6,000 hours of operation in normal mode. In my previous posts (pictures/short video) the Green LED is not working (connector burnt), the Red LED is flashing and the Blue LED seems to be OK.
Not Knowing exactly where to start I started with the LEDs, I was surprised by some of the things I found. This is going to be a Book, but I want to keep this a paperback so rather than explaining each technology in this post I will give you a link that will explain the technology. I also don’t want to make this too geeky so hopefully between the pictures and my efforts at explaining most will be able to follow, so let’s get started.
Here is the Luminus LED (1 of the 3) used in the projector http://www.flickr.com/photos/45307625@N02/6240222895/in/photostream
Here is a low magnification picture of the actual LED chip (one of the corners) behind the glass http://www.flickr.com/photos/45307625@N02/6240235457/in/photostream
In the next series of high magnification pictures I will point out and explain the defects in these LEDs, REMINDER I bought this projector in 12/09, that means these LEDs were made/assembled prior to that time, these problems I point out today may no longer exist in today’s product.
First image is of the Blue LED, take note of the perfect circle in the lower left of the image http://www.flickr.com/photos/45307625@N02/6240772304/in/photostream
Next image is of the Blue LED also notice the contaminate at the bottom http://www.flickr.com/photos/45307625@N02/6240778082/in/photostream
In the coming chat about what these problems are I’ll be referring to the 2 images above to try to explain what the problems are, the following images are to show the Green as well as the Red LEDs have the same problems.
The green LED, NOTE a dark spot in the center of each circle (will be part of the explanation) http://www.flickr.com/photos/45307625@N02/6240268885/in/photostream
Green LED at the edge where some contamination remains (black strings) http://www.flickr.com/photos/45307625@N02/6240790214/in/photostream
Red LED with same defects http://www.flickr.com/photos/45307625@N02/6240794828/in/photostream
Red LED with large defect http://www.flickr.com/photos/45307625@N02/6240811460/in/photostream
Now for the explanation, let me start by saying I’ve worked in the semiconductor industry for the last 32 years, in those years I’ve personally been responsible for resolving these types of manufacturing defects.
Let me start by listing what I DO NOT KNOW, I don not know if this film is an Oxide http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxide (SIO2), A Nitride film http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitride (Si3N4) or an exotic optical coating for blocking cretin wave lengths of light.
I DO NOT KNOW if this film is for Passivation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passivation , if it is used as a “Scratch Coating” (this is a film deposited to protect the device surface during assembly) or and optical coating http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optical_coating
I DO NOT KNOW what method was used to deposit this film, CVD http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemical_vapor_deposition , LPCVD (Same link talks about LPCVD too) or PECVD (Again same link talks about PECVD)
This is what I DO KNOW, if this film wasn’t needed it would not be on the chip.
I do know the wafers were contaminated with an organic particle (room dirt, dirty dryer, poor handling, etc) prior to the film deposition, this is not a guess this is a fact and I will try my best to explain this.
The film in the first blue picture has a gray tone to it except in the lower left corner where you see a perfect circle (same circles you see in the other photos), in that circle you see white for a color. The gray is the deposited film and the white is where the film did not deposit (Guess, the white is bare silicon).
The dark spots in the center of all the circles are the dehydrated/burnt/carbonized remnant of that particle after it went through the?? CVD process, this is what happened.
During the deposition of the gray film, very pure gases are used (for Nitride, SIH4 @ 99.999% pure and HN3 @ 99.9% pure), that very pure gas combination comes into contact with the gasses escaping from that organic particle (that can be ANY gas, O2, N2, water vapor, etc) and makes a different compound (Not an Oxide, Nitride or optical coating) that doesn’t stick/gets deposited on the surface where this gas is. The reason why it is a circle is because the emissions of gas is Omnidirectional http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omnidirectional from the particle meaning the gas extends the same distance around the particle in all dimensions (left/right, up/down).
The particle shrivels up to those tiny (sometimes larger) spots exactly in the center of the circle, BUT does it affect device performance, that was my next experiment. I removed the R/G/B LED from the projector and set up a test bench.
I used this power supply http://www.madelltech.com/TPR3000.pdf
with a TEC http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermoelectric_cooling
In this picture you can see the basic set up http://www.flickr.com/photos/45307625@N02/6241194428/in/photostream the 12 volts on the right is for the fan on the TEC, the fixed 5 volts was for the TEC (tri output supply) cooling it down to 1.6 deg C and the supply on the left was for the LEDs

So what do I know @ this stage Absolutely NOTHING, I found and identified the manufacturing defects in the LEDs, but SO WHAT it isn’t the problem.
So I now come back to the burnt connector, I go to Luminus website to copy the PDF only to find out they removed them, I had to call and request a copy (and I did). I wanted this info so I could make this accurate
According to their spec sheet The LED that has to be driven the hardest to reach 200 lumens is the blue LED, it requires about 6 amps where the red is 4.1 amps and the green is less than 2, so now I’m really confused as to why the LED that draws the least current was the one to cook?????? Resulting in this http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=222887&d=1316283643
One thing I have noticed is the LED side of the same connector had a slight browning around the same pin #s (6-7-8 the MOSFET + switching side).
So I am still in the same spot I was, except I have verified the LEDs still work fine. My next step is to put the projector back together (solder all connectors) and scope out the MOSFETS that drive the LEDs, the PDF is here http://www.datasheets.org.uk/KMB054N40%2A-datasheet.html (2nd PDF in the list).
I plan on sending a uniform RGB bar to the projector and scope out the MOSFETS (I would expect to see the same pulse duration (not magnitude)) if I detect a problem that is before these MOSFETS then it goes into the trash (I would be getting into OEM coded chips and I draw the line of effort there).
Sorry for saying so little in such a large post

The forum name finally makes some sense:D. I am not competent enough to comment afineman, but its an interesting post
You don't want all leds outputting the same lumens. The leds are driven so that the spectrum resembles black body radiation at ~6000k (see wiki).
That explains why the green led is driven harder and burns out quicker than the others.
Nice post! It is suprising to see those contaminants in the Luminous LED chips, in this day and age of fabs and clean rooms. It's good to see that the LED by itself is still functional.
afineman 03-04-12, 10:04 AM Greetings All
I finally did the last test (RGB test bars test while using a digital storage scope) the MOSFETs work fine, this means the problem is with the signal that turns the MOSFET on/off (gate firing). Not having a schematic nor the OEM code It is beyond/no time for me to research this problem any further.
I still hate the idea of throwing this out (the pack rat in me) seeing I've already verified the LEDs, so I'll hang on to it for a while.
In time other 201s will fail and before you (non pack ratters) throw it away PM me, I'm willing to pay shipping from you to me. I'm still curious what this failure is and don't mind spending a couple bucks in shipping to satisfy my curiosity.
Have a nice day :)
