View Full Version : From Kuro to Projection
darklord700 11-08-09, 12:16 AM I love my 50" Kuro especially it's deep black. However, I want something bigger (who doesn't?). So I want to make a jump to projection, I think I'll start with a 7' to 8' screen and maybe get the Epson 8100.
I just wanted to ask has anyone made the move from quality plasma/lcd to projection, do you think it's worth it. Is the trade off between quality and quantity worthwhile?

darklord700 11-08-09, 01:12 AM Awesome, thanks mrlittlejean.
Waboman 11-08-09, 01:25 AM I had a 60" Kuro Elite I sold in favor of a PJ. I absolutely love it. No regrets at all.
eightninesuited 11-08-09, 01:35 AM JVC RS20 is the one to get if you love Kuro black.
pottscb 11-08-09, 09:48 AM JVC RS20 is the one to get if you love Kuro black.
Or RS-25...if you have the cash (which, if you bought the big Kuro, you do!)
darklord700 11-08-09, 11:04 AM The JVC RS 20/25 are over $6K retail. This is my first dip into pj, I would like to start low. I have $2K budgeted for the pj and $1K for the screen plus manuel pull down casing. Any suggestions?
ChrisDuncan 11-08-09, 11:32 AM Obviously some projectors produce better blacks than others but equally important is how dark you can get your room. In an optimum room with dark walls, ceiling and floor (with the appropriate screen) blacks will look better with some less expensive projectors than the JVC RS20 in a room with white walls and ceiling.
I think that's something to keep in mind before buying the more expensive projectors.
I have a 50" Kuro in my den and just got a new projector for dedicated theater space upstairs. Panasonic PT-AE4000U $1999 and a 110" screen. I have not calibrated the pj yet but is has about 90% of the image quality of the kuro out of the box. The big screen experience with full sound, light control, etc makes up for that difference. When you go to a larger screen the quality of the source material will be exposed, standard def cable is still very watchable on the kuro but really bad at 110". The black levels when the lights are off and the scene is dark are close, but it is really apples vs oranges when you consider the entire experience. I am watching the kuro as I type this with the lights on and blinds wide open, can't do that with the pj. Get both if you can...best of both worlds.

The pj to beat in the 2k range is the panny4000 I suppose. For a grand you can get a sweet tensioned pulldown. I would budget 2500 for pj and 5 bills for screen...that's me. The price increase puts you in another league from what I have read.
eightninesuited 11-08-09, 02:49 PM Yea, the new Panasonic is the best deal for the price. It is fully featured with the latest tech and the black levels are more than suitable.
darklord700 11-08-09, 03:35 PM Another question I have is that instead of celing mount, I plan to place the pj on a table top for easier installation. Are all these Panny or Epson good for table top placement as well?
I came from CRT, which smashes Plasma/LCD contrast and it's been the coolest thing I've owned for years. 50" is now too tiny to watch a movie on. It's hard for me to watch a movie anywhere else now even if it's a 60" "big screen". I would bet you'd be thrilled with even a $700-$800 high quality DLP.

It's my understanding that lcd's have the lens shift thing going on. So you can set it somewhere and adjust picture horiz/vert to fit screen. basically move picture/image around vs lining everything up like you must do with dlp.
