I'm extremely confused on where to even start?

I'm buying a few protectors for a few friends. They are basically going to have both a satellite receiver and a 40" Samsung hooked into it. I know nothing about surge protectors or how much a "decent" one would cost.

They sold them some Monster's at Best Buy and I told them to take them back that iwould do some research and find out what was the best to get?

I've read a few posts here based on what the automatic pop up thing gave me by typing the above title as the title for this post, but I haven't really gotten anywhere.
