I believe it is only 4 hours with PP. Amazon lets you use it a MONTH without hour restrictions. It takes a good 50 hours before the pic is any good on the Benq. Amazon is the way to go if you are not sure.

Amazon lets you use it a MONTH without hour restrictions. It takes a good 50 hours before the pic is any good on the Benq. Amazon is the way to go if you are not sure. That's what I was thinking, I've had good luck with Amazon in the past on items that didn't work out. And I believe they're the same price as PP and others, too. blindbartimaeus 04-18-10, 07:43 AM Good luck. Truth be told I wish I had the W1000 back. Takes a little longer for the picture to get good but I want the lumens back. Joesyah 04-23-10, 04:23 PM Recieved my W1000 today! I didn't get a chance to really play with it though. Just tuned it a little and tested it with a lot and I mean a lot of ambient light in the room. I won't get a chance to see it in action till late tonight though. Intial impressions are that it is in deed a fairly quiet PJ and insanely bright! Definitley much quieter than my HD65. I have some experience with the W6000, which I find is a killer PJ. It is what made my decision to try out the W1000. I'm not expecting the same black levels, but if it has pop and sharpness along the same lines as its big brother I'll be happy. I did notice it has the 1.03 version software. I'm not sure what if any differences this makes. I can't wait till tonight for a real test run!:D Ssseth 04-23-10, 04:56 PM Recieved my W1000 today! The brightness is addictive! JaB240 04-23-10, 10:33 PM I've just gone through the whole thread as I am really thinking about picking this unit up. I am curious on what the OP's thoughts are on this several months after his purchase. It looks like he hasn't posted for a while. :( CKWells 04-24-10, 07:40 AM I've had mine for about 3 months now, and it still brings a smile to my face!! Just got done watching 'Monsters Vs. Aliens' and it looked incredible!! Given it's a nice bright animated movie, there was no rainbows whatsoever, and the image was awesome. I also watched with a little ambient light (a small light in an adjacent room), and it really made no difference. Joesyah 04-24-10, 09:35 AM I've had mine for about 3 months now, and it still brings a smile to my face!! Just got done watching 'Monsters Vs. Aliens' and it looked incredible!! Given it's a nice bright animated movie, there was no rainbows whatsoever, and the image was awesome. I also watched with a little ambient light (a small light in an adjacent room), and it really made no difference. This is what I noticed last night watching movies. The ambient light issue is a total non-factor for this projector. I had at times six 100 watt bulbs burning in the room. Normally I would instantly get up to turn off lights so I could see the picture better. Last night I kept forgetting that the lights were on! lol That's when I realized I could summon Batman with this thing. It was so bright last night, that I had to turn off the Brilliant color all together showing on my 119 inch screen. Even with brilliant color off and running in Econo mode, this is still the brightest home movie projector I've ever installed! That includes the BenQ W6000, Sony W60,various JVC models or the little HD65. No the W1000 doesn't match the black levels of any of these mentioned, well at least not yet. The lamp has some burning in to do to even match the HD65. Truth be told the only place I noticed the lower black levels were at the borders of the movies. But since I do not watch the black borders of the movies. I watch the film itself. This isn't an issue for me. The actual colors of the movies were vibrant and saturated! It matches the sharpness of the W6000 without question, which is known to be one of the sharpest PJs out there! The RBE which I'm prone to showed itself at the beginning. As I watched more they (the rainbows) slowly started to subside. I had the same experience with the HD65. Once the lamp settles in, the projector is calibrated, as well as your brain adjusting, things do get better. I was up till 4 a.m. this morning watching movies! The only real issue I had was finding the proper display timing to match my HTPC. There was some terrible tearing going on at the beginning. Once I got them in sinc properly, all was well. I'm puzzled at how BenQ was able to get such a beamer from a 180 watt lamp? Anyone know why this is? My HD65(running full steam) uses a 180 watt lamp and wasn't as bright as this projector set to econo with brilliant color turned off. This projector has been a pleasure to own I was hoping you would say that. :D I'm thinking of pairing this up with a gray screen to help with the black levels. What are your thoughts on this guys? Also, what firmware should I be looking for? 103 or are there newer ones now? CKWells 04-24-10, 06:17 PM Check out the screen recommendations part of Art's review (and then read the rest if you haven't already). http://www.projectorreviews.com/benq/w1000/screens.php I also have an early revision of firmware. So I can't save the 3d colour settings for perfect calibration. Hasn't stopped me though, and the thought of taking the projector off the mount given how awesome the picture is already, isn't attractive to me. It's that good. I do see rainbows, and that may be the only thing i'd rate against this projector, but it really doesn't bother me that much during movies. I think this is were the PJ get's it's brightness from... The fact it has a slow colour wheel allows more light through. Stix2 - That's crazy! I have about 200 hours on mine... Still love it though. Jeffcom 04-24-10, 08:00 PM 500 hours on mine. A pleasure to watch. Great bang for the buck. No issues. DIY S-I-L-V-E-R screen. Check screen forum. Joesyah 04-30-10, 03:03 AM OK so now with over 30 hours and some tweaking. The picture quality is extremely good! I've learned the W1000 has settings that are buried within other settings. For the owners who haven't discovered this, the only way to access these settings is to turn on brilliant color. Once the settings are adjusted, you can turn BC off and the initial adjustments will remain. First set the picture mode to User 2. This should be (cinema) under reference mode. Other settings as followed Brightness 53 contrast -12 0 for Color , Tint, Sharpness and Flesh tones. Gamma 2.2 Now make sure BC is turned on. Set color temperature to User 2. From there go into (Color temperature fine tuning) and set it to warm. Now go into 3D Color management. Choose Cyan(C) , select Hue and adjust to -70. Now go back and turn BC off, save settings. The picture will be much more balanced and natural. Buttox Brown 05-08-10, 10:01 AM Just about to buy this projector next week. 2 things that are putting me off and are considering the HD20. I cant find any info that says it supports 24p. I only watch blu ray films and if it judders this will annoy me from day 1. The throw ratio seems about the worst for budget 1080p pj's. I need to project a 92" screen from about 10'. This does not seem possible when you look at distance calculators. The hd20 and hc3800 manages this no problem. Been offered this pj for £844 and a 1/2 price screen. Very tempted by price and pq but these issues are seriously putting me off. Jeffcom 05-08-10, 08:35 PM It does do 24p. Check projectorcentral.com for throw ratio. http://www.projectorcentral.com/BenQ-W1000-projection-calculator-pro.htm Buttox Brown 05-09-10, 02:30 AM According to the distance calculator from 3 meters it can only achieve 85". I need a pj that does 92" from that distance. Thinking about the HD20 or the epson tw680 (i know it's only 720p but the lens shift and throw ratio makes it very flexible). jdag 05-09-10, 07:58 AM I found this calculator very useful when planning my setup: http://www.benq.com/product/projector/calculator/ Buttox Brown 05-09-10, 01:47 PM Thanks for that. When i used that one the results were worse. Maximum screen size is 76"! Buttox Brown 05-09-10, 01:51 PM Sorry..my mistake. I accidently entered model number w10000 instead of w1000. Screen size is 85" max. Does anyone think that will be a decent sized screen from a vewing distance of 8 feet? Jim McC 05-09-10, 05:06 PM Sorry..my mistake. I accidently entered model number w10000 instead of w1000. Screen size is 85" max. Does anyone think that will be a decent sized screen from a vewing distance of 8 feet? 85" is too large. That's less than 1X screen width. Joesyah 05-23-10, 08:37 PM This gives a small example of the uncontrollable light the projector must deal with between 6 p.m and 7 p.m EST during the summer months in my home. The projector is set to econo mode with brilliant color engaged(1200 or so lumen's in current mode, with another 900 to spare when switched to normal mode). The pic is a shot from Casino Royale playing from hard drive.. The screen is 119 inches pull down and 120 inches fixed . There are many projectors that couldn't throw a watchable image on the screen with this much light on their best days! http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u2/gmood1/Hometheater/120.jpg http://cgim.audiogon.com/i/vs/i/f/1274659718.jpg http://cgim.audiogon.com/i/vs/i/f/1274660277.jpg http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u2/gmood1/Hometheater/118.jpg Below is night viewing an assortment of 720 movie shots, Desktop backgrounds and a little HTPC viewing using Media Browser . A little shaky on some of the pics. The images are much sharper and more vibrant in person. I recently changed screens, so I'm still tweaking contrast, brightness and colors. The new screen has way more gain than I expected. So all my settings are having to be reduced. For example the brightness level alone has dropped from 53 down to 36! I have the BenQ "claimed" for the $849 price but haven't bit just yet being that I'm not sure how well this model seems to survive (and how well BenQ is at honoring their warranties). That and the 1 year warranty is making me leary vs. the Epson 705HD which I have on Backorder on Amazon right now (2 year warranty and Epson is KNOWN for their great CS and reliability) milasb 06-11-10, 01:59 PM If you're like me and missed the Amazon Gold Box deal, don't worry! They lowered the price to $879. I wonder if it will continue to drop... Joesyah 06-11-10, 02:51 PM I just saw this deal last night. At that price.. it is a no brainer! There'a nothing that competes at this price level. FWIW The W1000 is the brightest 1080P PJ under $3000 for those with ambient light issues like me. I wish I got mine for that price! :) So far my unit has worked flawlessly ..not a single issue. Jim McC 06-11-10, 05:50 PM If you're not rainbow sensitive, this is an excellent projector. My w1000 will be here on thursday!! Anyone shelf mounting one of these? I would like to install a shelf high on the back wall instead of using a ceiling mount. Is this a good idea? I am going to be pairing this with a 119" HP, anyone have a similar setup that would like to share their experience so far? Highground5 06-29-10, 11:13 AM You can put it on a shelf but I think you will need to place it on the shelf upside down. Why not just mount it to the ceiling? The mount from monoprice is cheap and easy to install. Ive got just over 800 hours on my W1000 and I love it. Ill never be able to go back to a traditional tv. With the brilliant color on this projector pops like an lcd. Playoff hockey in 1080 with 5.1 surround 120" screen felt like I was sitting in the stands. My friends were also blown away. Rambows are there but Ive gotten used to them and dont really notice them anymore. Although Im really happy with this projector Im already planning my upgrade. I'm sure you've done your home work on throw distances and such. What's the gain of your screen..2.8? As long as the throw distances work for you ..it shouldn't matter how you mount it. You will lose flexibility by going with a shelf verses a mount. As stated by the previous poster, It looks as though you'll have to mount it upside down. If that's the case..a ceiling mount would be easier. The w1000 doesn't have lens shift like the w6000. I use mine on a table top 14 feet back with a 120" high gain screen as well( not Da-Lite). However...the high gain really isn't necessary with this projector. A 1.1 to 1.3 looks just fine. Be prepared to crank the brightness down considerably! It will come in normal lamp mode..remember to change it to econo. Even reducing the brightness considerably, your screen will be brighter and pop more than any Plasma or LCD! ragman78 06-29-10, 02:05 PM Thanks for the quick replies, i am getting a model c with 2.4 gain. I shall also be throwing from right about 14 feet. Since there is vertical keystone can i mount it lower than the recommended 8.8" above the screen and move the image up in order to take better advantage of the retroreflectiveness of my screen? Or am i misunderstanding keystone correction? What are you using the device for? Using keystone negatively effects the image. Some folks are okay with it if using for movies only. In my case though, any keystone really distorts the image when I'm displaying content from my PC or any menus in games. I wouldn't buy a projector if I had to use keystone to work in my setup. ragman78 06-29-10, 02:33 PM It is going to be used to movies and sports and some tv, if it will distort the image i will not mess with it and keep the projector mounted at the recommended 8.8 " above the screen. From everything i have read about the brightness of this thing i doubt i will be needing any extra gain from my screen! My set has been a Mitsubishi WD-Y57 since october 2006 and i have never seen any rainbows, does this mean i should be ok with not seeing them on the W1000? Or am i misunderstanding keystone correction? The keystone is used for compensating the angle at which the image hits the screen. It can't be used as a vertical adjustment to move the entire image up or down. You can mount it(projector) higher but not lower than the offset or move the screen lower, this rule is reversed if you're table mounting. I hope I'm not confusing you. lol I use a little keystoning...no distortion here on Desktop or movies. Well it sort of can be used to move the image up or down since you could tilt the projector up or down and use the keystone correction to help fix the trapazoid image that will result. Here is an example of what using keystone correction is suppose to help fix. These are pretty extreme examples though. http://www.pws-sales.com/images/buyersguide/keystone-correction.jpg Joesyah 06-29-10, 03:13 PM Well it sort of can be used to move the image up or down since you could tilt the projector up or down and use the keystone correction to help fix the trapazoid image that will result. I never looked at the keystone in that way. I think of it more for just getting a square image than vertical height adjustment. By the way there's a button on the remote you can use to square things up easier. Just hit the test button, it will make it easier to get the image in focus and squared up. ragman78 06-29-10, 03:18 PM Ok, so my best image will be thrown with the PJ level, dead center, at 8.8" above the screen, correct? The keystone shouldn't affect the image, if set properly. I do use my W1000 with the lens set to its widest zoom. And then focus from there..you get the most lumens when set this way. And then focus from there..you get the most lumens when set this way. I beg to differ. Keystone is artificially adjusting the image and will negatively impact the projected image one way or another. The more you use it, the bigger the impact. Granted, it's not as noticeable on video such as TV and Bluray/DVD content. But it is definitely noticeable on computer images and gaming menu's (including HUD's in game). Even one notch of keystone is apparent on my W1000 when using with my PC. It generally takes a couple of notches before I'll notice it in games. Bottom line, I'd recommend avoiding using the keystone function unless absolutely necessary. It might be fine if used in an office for a Power Point presentation but I don't think it has any business being used in a home theater setup. If it's the only way to get it working in your environment though, I suppose you may not have any other option. Well, except buying a more expensive projector with lens shift of course. All that being said, if you are happy with your setup I suppose that is all that really matters. Joesyah 06-29-10, 04:43 PM I beg to differ. I am more than happy with its performance, it is an absolutely STUNNING projector. Everything about it has been a great experience, from instant settup, to a BRIGHT, SHARP picture. I'll give you several reasons I chose the W1000 over the HD20. Quieter for one. No over the top lumen output fudging..like Optoma I like BenQs Optics/processing. Sharpness and clarity seem to be a strong point in BenQ's philosophy. I owned a Optoma HD65 before the BenQ. Not only is there a significant difference in resolution, but image noise is much lower as well. I wanted to take advantage of a larger screen when the time is right(using 120 inch now). The BenQ will allow that...the Optoma HD20 won't. Real world lumen output ..goes to the BenQ by a mile! It is twice as bright as the Optoma. ragman78 07-02-10, 08:53 AM The unit came yesterday afternoon, the picture is amazing, and this is projecting onto a white sheet that i got at a fabric store and i estimate that i am only throwing about a 100" image, i can only imagine what the picture is going to look like once my 119" HP gets here next week! Anyhow, i am going to mount this on a back shelf as i already have one and it will save me money not having to buy a mount. My plan is to place circular furniture pads on the 4 corners on the top of the unit and place it upside down on the pads, anyone see an issue with this? Hey as long as the buttons don't have any pressure on them..what ever works best for you. Being able to focus the unit ..won't be as easy. Yup..you haven't seen what it will do..the screen will make a tremendous difference! Remember to calibrate before turning off the brilliant color. Some of the user-modes aren't accessible with BC turned off. I say turn off BC all together unless you need it during the day or burning lights in the room. Even with the lights..its probably not necessary. With that hi power screen you'll surely burn your eyeballs out if you don't back off the brightness ! :D ragman78 07-02-10, 05:37 PM So I watched the early world cup game today and i got some serious nausea. Anyone else experience this when first using this pj? My main tv is a 5 year old mitsubishi dlp rptv and i have never had an issue with it. I did some research and found that a few people are affected this way and that for some it gets worse while others seem to fight through it and it gets better. I love everything about this pj but if this wont get better I cant see myself keeping it. Keep in mind that this was still projecting onto a white sheet at about 95", my screen is going to be 119" and i am guessing this will make it worse. Any recommendations? How close are you to the screen? Yeah if there's a lot of camera shaking going on..its very possible. You will adjust to it as time goes on. I suspect you're not accustom to such a large image while viewing stuff like that. I doubt its the PJ and more to you adjusting to the new image size. You see much more movement with a PJ than a TV. The brain needs to adjust. ragman78 07-02-10, 05:49 PM I am sitting about 13.5 feet from the screen and i will be staying at this distance when i make the jump up to 119" tomorrow. The movie green zone had so much camera shake in it..it made me feel the same...lol You'll be fine...just allow your brain and eyes to adjust. ballerstatus 07-04-10, 01:59 AM Just got the W1000...I must say, I have never been so satisfied with an A/V purchase. Granted I'm coming from a 42" Panasonic EDTV Plasma, I still cannot believe how amazing the picture is. I have tried so hard to see RBE, but the only rainbows I see is when I look into the projector from the side grill. I am projecting on a beige-colored wall in a relatively well-lit living room, and the picture is still awesome. I am debating whether or not I really need a screen. For those of you that have projected on a wall and then on a screen, did it really make that significant of a difference? If so, what screen did you use after projecting on a wall? Also, is it possible to place the projector upside down on a shelf? It seems as if the upside down option is only possible if you have a ceiling mount. Yes the screen is going to make a major difference! The simplest way to use the pj upside down, will be with a ceiling mount. As far as screens go you have your pick with this projector. You can use a gray screen or a matte white. You can go high gain or low gain. It is whatever you prefer. If you like that plasma pop and brightness, it really doesn't matter what gain screen you use with this projector. lol It has so much in reserve a 1.0 to 1.3 would be plenty. If you feel like really lighting it up you can push it to 2 or 3.:D If possible..go with a fixed screen. I'm at the 300 hr mark on the lamp, I find myself going into to the menu sometimes to make sure I have the BC turned off when I first turn it on. ..because it belts out those lumen's so well it has me thinking I accidentally turned on the BC or set it to normal mode by mistake. lol jmos 07-04-10, 11:49 PM Purchased this projector a few weeks ago and was quite amazed at the great PQ. Joesyah your images pretty much made my mind up, I was going to purchase the JVC 550 but want to wait to see where 3D and LED is heading so decided to purchase entry level, well the PQ of the W1000 certainly doesn't look entry level. I have seating at 4.5m and 6.3M, just projecting on my very dark blue wall and image still looks great, decided on 120inch screen just got to order one now. I really wasn't sure what gain to get, your images look so great, my room is totally light controlled so I guess low gain should be ok? One issue which is hardly noticable, I do get some light leakage from the lens area that throws some light onto my ceiling, projector is ceiling mounted, thinking about making some sought of shield, anyone have this issue? Also when I stop a movie or go to the movie menu the projector always searches for source HDMI1 which is what its set to, always finds it and comes back but happens everytime? Thanks again for everyones tips Regards John:) John I'm glad it working out for you!:) Yeah I would say with your room being completely light controlled a 1.0 to 1.3 (standard white matte screen) should be fine. I haven't noticed the light leakage myself. Mine is table mounted though. Once you get your screen up it will become less noticeable , because the screen itself is throwing so much light back towards you. Your blue wall is soaking up a lot of light! That won't be the case with the screen. Go with a fixed screen instead of the pull down if possible. Do you have the projector set to use HDMI 1 and not search the other inputs? I use an HTPC for movies and Xbox 360 with mine. The only time it's searching is when I turn off the source component. I wanted to add, you could go with a .8 gain gray screen if you wanted to get deeper blacks. The gray screen will mute the colors a bit. But since you're using a blue wall ..the gray will give you better colors nonetheless than what you're seeing now. jmos 07-05-10, 01:26 AM Do you have the projector set to use HDMI 1 and not search the other inputs? Will consider the grey screen. I have ambient light issues that can't be fixed so the increased light output will be much appreciated. Some of the screenshots have also blown me away. But I'm still concerned with the Customer Service and quality perception that I have. Is BenQ a good company to deal with if something goes wrong? And does anyone think the price will come back down on Amazon? Its been $999 virtually everywhere that I've looked for the past 2 weeks - I can't buy it until the middle of the week anyway but I would love to save a couple bucks if I could. bub 07-10-10, 05:20 PM One issue which is hardly noticable, I do get some light leakage from the lens area that throws some light onto my ceiling, projector is ceiling mounted, thinking about making some sought of shield, anyone have this issue? I have the W5000, ceiling mounted and I too get light spillage. I was concerned about it and rigged up a deflector shield and was very happy with myself... for awhile. Unfortunately, although I was deflecting the light hitting the ceiling, I was also deflecting some of the light back into the projected light path and washing out the image. So, my advice taken from personal experience, be careful where you deflect the light leakage and make sure it isn't getting back into the projected light path. You missed an amazing deal on Amazon a few weeks ago. The price was down below $900 new! Quality wise I haven't experienced the first issue with my unit. My buddy has the W6000 and all is well with his too. In-fact...look at the issues from a few of the other threads with other manufactures. The BenQs seem to be some of the most reliable of the bunch. I've yet to see anyone posting here in months with issues. However ...there are nearly daily postings from owners from some of the other brands. Good point, I haven't heard a peep of complaint either. Granted this projector is less popular than some of the others. If I had to guess, I'd say the HD20 outsells this unit at least 3 to 1. Still extremely happy with my unit. It's the third HD projector I've owned and it's my favorite by far. Edit: Just an example. I wanted to add for the poster combating ambient light. The Unishape technology this projector uses does have a positive affect on light hitting the screen. I thought it was just something they added as a sells gimmick. But whatever it does, it makes a major difference in how efficient the light hits the screen. Some of the online reviews have this projector no brighter than its competition in certain modes. However...the real world differences in your home are quite staggering! Besides the Vivitek..there's nothing out there under $5000 that's 1080P besides the BenQ SP890($3000 retail) that can match it in brightness while still throwing a very dynamic image. I compared it to my now sold off Optoma HD65, which at the time had a brand new bulb, zero hours on the lamp. Based on www.projectorreviews.com measurements. The HD65 should pump out some where in the neighborhood of 1140 lumens in its brightest mode. With the Benq running in low lamp mode, Brilliant Color turned off using the settings I posted two pages back with 250 hrs on the lamp. The Benq was still visibly brighter than my HD65. Seriously ...it wasn't even close! Watching the movie "Descent 2" where the cave rescuers are under ground and using the lamps on their helmets. Every time one of them turns towards the screen, it is just like some one is standing in the room shining a light in your eyes or around the room. You can literally follow the beams of light from this movie around your room walls!:D Ssseth 07-10-10, 11:48 PM Agreed. I'm honestly shocked this projector doesn't get more attention. It's a bright and stunning image in most lighting conditions. I'd guess it's the 2x color wheel. I didn't realize it when I bought it myself and would have probably have been turned off it if I had known at the time. I'm glad I didn't since I haven't seen any rainbows and am a happy camper. jtbeemer 07-10-10, 11:52 PM You missed an amazing deal on Amazon a few weeks ago. The price was down below $900 new! It was really annoying last week or so to see the price jump like that, and seemingly everywhere at the same time. Thanks for the general info on the quality issues - you do a general search on BenQ and find some pretty annoying stuff, but that doesn't take into account people who are happy of course. Even in this thread it seemed like it was just a handful of people with problems. I've re-read a bunch of the reviews and links from this thread and from searches in general and it seems to me that this projector in particular gets better as the lamp hours grow. Does this mean that the black levels get better too? Did the reviews using brand new projectors miss a big selling point because of this peculiarity? Also, looking on the BenQ site they only suggest 3 sites to buy from (PP, Amazon, B&H) - apart from those is there another popular seller I should be keeping an eye on? Yes..the projector image does get better as the lamp ages. The black levels get much better as well. Skin tones become more natural. If the reviewers didn't use this projector pass 100 hours..then they missed what it is capable of..no doubt about it. It throws so much light ..the lamp needs to settle before its potential is realized. Joesyah 07-12-10, 01:14 PM The links below gives some insight on what the Unishape technology does for those interested. So far I've found only two projector manufactures using this technology, that being Sim2 (http://www.sim2usa.com/home/us/Grand-Cinema-HT-Series-us) and BenQ. From reading the article this explains the differences I see between the BenQ and my Optoma HD65. Both use the same wattage bulb with different color wheel speeds...the BenQ is just far more efficient at getting the most out of the lamp with very little image noise, thanks to the Unishape tech. This also explains why for me it feels like I'm looking through glass and not plexi-glass when viewing images on the screen. In other words, there's a clarity that goes beyond just sharpness. It is the same difference you see viewing a plasma(glass screen) verses an LCD panel that uses a matte screen..if you get my drift. http://www.osram.com/osram_com/Tools_%26_Services/Downloads/UNISHAPE/What_is_UNISHAPE/Unishape_Presentation.pdf http://www.osram.com/osram_com/Tools_&_Services/Downloads/UNISHAPE/What_is_UNISHAPE/index.html Edit: I found another projector using Unishape technology the Runco LS-5 (http://www.avguide.com/review/runco-ls-5-lightstyle-dlp-hd-projector-the-perfect-vision-85). The InFocus Sp8602 was mentioned on the web using this same tech, but from what I've found it doesn't and instead uses a phillips lamp. abshard 07-26-10, 05:37 AM Everyone is saying to turn off brilliant color but it seems when i do all the whites turn a dingy offwhite greyish color. My screen is cinewhite 1.1 gain from elite. I have it on eco mode. Its about 15 ft from the screen on the ceiling. Room is 100% dark. Im running it thru an htpc watching bluray movies that are stored on my HD. I tried the setting suggested by Joesyah. Turning BC off really drops the brightness alot more then turning the eco mode off. For now im just using the default cinema mode to watch movies and i have the other setting set to user 1. Yes you are correct, the white has nothing to do with running the PJ in BC mode.Turn BC on and then make your adjustments from there. The default settings aren't that great. What is you contrast set at? Also what is your User mode(cinema) set at(normal, warm, warmer)? There's hidden settings that will allow you to change the temperature of the user modes. In order to change those you have to leave brilliant color on. After you make your adjustments hit the save button. If you don't they'll be lost when you turn off the PJ or change to another user mode. Running with BC and full lamp ..you should be wearing shades surfing the net..LOL. It is super white here..it was so brilliant white I had to cut my white peak down to 1. Put the PJ in econo mode as well. In a bat cave you shouldn't need anything higher than econo mode. Also look at my latest settings on page 26 near the end of that page. You can increase your bright settings if you need to. By adjusting the contrast your whites will improve though as B states. Just don't over do it or you'll start to crush the whites. If using the Media center, it has some tutorials with images to help you calibrate the projector. The contrast and brightness sections helped me a lot. This PJ has a plethora of hidden adjustments..it doesn't sound like you've located them as yet. Joesyah 07-28-10, 02:49 AM I'm not sure if this has been mentioned in this thread. It yields such a dramatic difference in image for the better..I think its worth mentioning. Ok I've been playing with the color spacing sent to this projector. So far the best I've discovered is using pixel format YCbCr 4:4:4. In your menu of the W1000 (information section) it should read YCbCr 709 as the color system. If you're using an HTPC with a video card that allows you to change color spacing..change it to this setting. If your Disc player has this as a color spacing, try it and see for yourself. I've noticed moving from Studio Quality Full RBG 4:4:4 settings to YCbCr 4:4:4 a dramatic deepening of color. The black levels have also deepened. At first I thought my eyes may have been playing tricks on me. After swapping back and forth several times. It was EXTREMELY obvious the YCbCr 4:4:4 fits this projector like a glove. It seems to handle the colors and blacks much better this way. If you haven't been using it this way.. you're in for a pleasant surprise!:) JoeFourMan 07-28-10, 09:10 AM This is VERY interesting indeed. Any way to switch to that colorspacing via a ps3? From your description, the screen will be 2 feet from the top of the ceiling. Your projector is 12" down with another 7" for the offset. With the projectors depth add another 2" or so to that to the center of the lens. So you'll be within 2" of hitting the screen dead center. With all the variables your going to be very close to nailing it! Move your screen up..say an inch or so and you'll be on the money..no key-stoning necessary I'm not sure just how much key-stoning you'll need..if you need it at all..it won't be much..that is for sure. This projector does have automatic key-stoning. blindbartimaeus is the only poster I've seen that owned them both. Other than the brightness..I'm not sure what the differences are. blindbartimaeus 07-28-10, 01:04 PM Most people will scream that you can't key stone and if you are under 5 clicks and you should be...won't be a problem. Benq is brighter than my vivitek and I had RMA'd the benq and had the vivitek on the way before the bulb got burnt in on the benq, and then it got real sharp and regretted not getting another benq. The vivitek is nice and with my white ceiling it works out color wise and it isn't that far behind the benq. Both are fine units...I would go benq in hindsight. Anthony*gw 07-28-10, 01:24 PM hey thanks guys, for the quick reply. you have just given me confidence to go along with my first choice, which is the benq. blindbartimaeus 07-28-10, 02:23 PM make sure you get it from Amazon if you have a problem they have no hour restrictions on return and pay for return shipping. Should arrive early next week. I was most interested in these three because (a) I didn't want to spend huge $$ given the chance that 3D projectors might become desirable in a couple of years, (b) the fixed offset of the Mitsubishi and Vivitek boxes were too large for my installation needs, and (c) I can't live with the Optoma's fan roar. For the specific choice of the Benq, I'll be using an HTPC with the projector a lot, so the added sharpness of a DLP box was appealing to me for viewing text-heavy web content. Plus, I've grown accustomed to the DLP-style PQ after owning DLP set-top TVs and projectors for the last 6 years. The extra lumens was the final selling point for me, and when I saw Amazon's price drop $75, that was it, I pulled the trigger. I am not sensitive to RBE so unless someone is, it seems hard to go wrong with choosing the Benq from what I can tell. Well..no one can say you don't get use out of your projectors! WOW 2000 hrs...I hope mine treats me the same! It has lasted twice as long as my last projector(optoma) so far..which exploded inside around 200 hours! lol That's a good sign! It's funny ..with my other projector..I turned the brightness up as the hours clicked by, actually with in 100 hrs I was turning it up..the picture noticeably began to dim..with this one I've been turning it down. lol The image seems just as bright as it did the first day I fired her up. Nearing the 400 hr mark now..no issues in the least. I use it every day. This is a rock solid little projector. abshard 07-29-10, 07:58 PM I haven’t had much time to mess with the projector settings to see about the white backgrounds because my receiver or htpc is acting up. I updated my gigabyte 9400m gpu board with the latest graphics drivers and now my pioneer 84 just flashes the hdmi light,if I plug it directly into the projector I get video fine just no sound obviously except for the tiny projector speaker. I tried rolling back to the previous driver and still have the problem,i will try system restore later to see if that fixes it. I already contacted pioneer and there is an hdmi update for the reciever but no idea if it will fix my problem. Anyways I had another question about the w1000, there is an auto button and in the manual it says something about auto adjusting the picture but when I pressed the button nothing happened. Jeffcom 07-29-10, 08:48 PM Stix2, anyone Has there ever been a fix for the red lamp light flashing before the PJ fires up? 800 hrs on mine, no real loss in brightness. Loving it! Obviously images do not reflect true picture quality, eg the blacks look a bit crushed & dark in the photos etc. Bulb has about 150hrs, using Eco mode, Cinema 1 as a ref. Brightness = 47, Contrast -16 BC = off, all other settings = 0. Color settings have been slightly tweaked based on another users comprehensive calibration. Screen is an Aurora 95 inch 1.1 gain, black velvet frame bought from ozts.com.au. Projecting from a custom made, portable overhead mount from about 11.5 feet away. Full zoom. I'm also running a Hoya HMC ND2 filter over the lens, which cuts the light output down, reducing rainbows alot (which I am sensitive too) and improving blacks. Overall impressions. Lovely image once you tame the brightness a little and fend of the rainbows :) Enjoy. http://www.fuzzytv.com.au/benqw1000/Bond_lake.jpg http://www.fuzzytv.com.au/benqw1000/bond_hanging.jpg http://www.fuzzytv.com.au/benqw1000/bond_madagascar.jpg http://www.fuzzytv.com.au/benqw1000/bond_square.jpg http://www.fuzzytv.com.au/benqw1000/ps3_batman.jpg http://www.fuzzytv.com.au/benqw1000/ps3_flower.jpg Joesyah 07-30-10, 12:51 AM Thanks Joe for taking the time to post some pics! Sharpness..they are equal in this area as well..both razor sharp. Colors are a tad more accurate with the W6000. And as you've stated the flexibility is in the W6000s favor. Honestly for me ..there's not enough differences for me to spend the extra dough. If the W6000 were $800 to $1000 more, then for me the differences would be worth that much. Is the W6000 worth 2 1/2 times the w1000 price?..I'm not so sure. It does throw a beautiful image though..I don't think you'd be the least bit disappointed. Anyone have a link to one that is a low price? Thanks Joesyah 08-22-10, 08:39 PM Amazon is a good place to get one when their in stock. Go directly to the Benq website for $999. I just checked..they're sold out to. The W1000+ is coming to market . You may have to give it a few weeks before it is available. I'm nearing the 500 hr mark. This projector has been flawless! It's as bright as the first day I turned it on. Benq may have figured out the lamp life of these projectors is pretty darn long. They upped the life from 4000 to 5000 running in econo mode. $175 for a replacement lamp with this kind of light output and lamp life is pretty amazing. fmjets11 08-22-10, 08:41 PM Why dont places like newegg, electronicsexpo and tiger direct sell the w1000? fmjets11 08-22-10, 08:46 PM Would it be ok to purchase this through benq's website refurbished? Do I mount the projector at the right distance then put the screen in place? I mean, is there a chance I will have to remount the ceiling mount to move it an inch or two to line up properly? Joesyah 08-24-10, 04:14 PM Thanks for the help. Now I have one more question. How do I set the projector and screen up? Do I mount the projector at the right distance then put the screen in place? I mean, is there a chance I will have to remount the ceiling mount to move it an inch or two to line up properly? There's no one right way to do it really. You can mount the pj at the proper distance and shoot it at the wall. If you've calculated properly and as long as the projector is square with the screen you'll be fine. The zoom will give you some room to play with, so the pj doesn't have to be exactly down to the inch in distance from the screen. Try to get your offset as close as possible to the height you want to achieve. felidaeus 08-25-10, 01:51 PM I bought the w1000 about 2-3 months ago now. At about 400 hours and no noticeable drop in quality. Absolutely loving it. I was considering a screen, but saw all the reviews on blackout cloth, and came to an interesting realization: blackout cloth is within about 10% of the white shade of my wall. So I went out and purchased $30 of blackout cloth and stapled it to my wall. Because of the layout of the room, it isn't noticeable. This meant I didn't need to rewire some light switches and stuff in the way, which was an added bonus. I'll post some photos later. To people worries about ceiling mounting. I have my ceiling mount sitting at about 5 ft just above the couch. No problems with sound or heat, and no problems with people walking in front of the screen. Because it's just above the couch, nobody can hit their head on it either, since the motion of sitting/standing means nobody is at full height. I get about a 110" screen. smokey8 08-26-10, 01:07 PM Ordered my w1000 monday, and this screen http://eastporters.com/estore/cart.php?target=category&category_id=41 Should be here Friday or Monday! :) SeveredDime 08-27-10, 01:23 PM I'm shopping for my first projector and I've been looking at the usual suspects in the budget category. Epson 8100, Mitsu HC3800, W1000 etc. In reading through this thread It looks like the W1000 is a good PJ for rooms with ambient light. For movies I have the ability to black the room out but for everyday TV viewing I have a fair amount of ambient light spilling from an aquarium in the same room. For obvious reasons I don't want to shut the aquarium lights down everytime I want to watch TV. My biggest question or concern I guess is it's mounting limitations. On the calculator is references 9.3" for ceiling mounted at 16'. What I don't understand, does it have to be above the screen by 9.3 inches or with-in 9.3 inches of the top of the screen? I only have 7.5" ceiling in my basement, depending on how I layout the room it might be possible. Thanks for your help. illnastyimpreza 08-27-10, 03:42 PM IIRC the w1000 doesn NOT have lense shift like my w500. Joesyah 08-27-10, 10:56 PM From looking at the calculator, your screen will be roughly 9.5 inches down from the center of the projector lens. The projector would be 15' from the screen. Screen height is roughly 64" or 5' 4". Give yourself about 6" from the lens to ceiling with mount. Your screen would be 15.5 inches from the top of the ceiling. Your screen would go almost to the floor, with 8" or so to spare. A 120" on such a short wall would make more sense. rccalc 08-29-10, 11:43 AM I see others have done this and are pleased . Will I have to mount it upside down? The throw distance for that size screen is 15.01' . At the closes throw distance you can set the lens wide, which will give you the most lumen output. And yes mounting it upside is the best option in that configuration. Highground5 09-06-10, 11:27 AM - Try a different hdmi cable. I had the same problem with my ps3 using a cheap hdmi cable, couldn't establish a 1080p signal. Test with a short, high quality one. - reduce your screen output to a lower res ( using your tv) then try the projector again. My guess is bad cable. Also did you try both hdmi ports on pj? Thanks man. I should have tried a different cable and port. Not sure why I didnt think of that. Got it working now on the second port. Dont think it was the cable itself because Ive been using that cable with my htpc from when I first bought the projector. Im at 1327hrs and still loving it. Joesyah 09-09-10, 01:02 AM Thanks! Also, I'm wondering if a UPS is needed for this unit to protect against power outages? I'm sure it won't hurt. Just about any piece of electronic equipment is benefited by some sort of surge protection. This is a tough little projector..that is relatively cheap to maintain when compared to most. mratsoy 09-12-10, 06:41 PM Hi, Does anyone in greater Vancouver, BC have this projector and loving it? I just bought it and I find that the rainbows are terrible, and I'm hearing a high pitched whine from the unit. I'd like to do a side by side comparison for picture quality and noise(pitch) to see if I have a color wheel defect. Or, if you know of a retailer that is demonstrating it, please let me know. Thanks. Joesyah 09-12-10, 07:02 PM Hi, Does anyone in greater Vancouver, BC have this projector and loving it? I would send it in or take it back to the retailer. .conne. 09-15-10, 07:16 AM 2000 hours still happy as heck :) Stix2, did your problems with saving settings ever get solved with a new firmware? Am thinking of buying this PJ, and read the whole thread, but I haven't seen this answered. I read on another forum that there is a firmware 1.03, which should fix these issues. Also, the firmware should be on units shipped after december 2009. As seen in this thread (replies by S2 13BT and johnnydelva): http://www.dtvforum.info/lofiversion/index.php/t84150.html Maybe anyone else who has a newer unit (like say shipped in 2010), can comment on this? I am running it through a Pioneer VSX-9040TXH, connected via hdmi. Its weird because we recently upgraded from an Optoma HD72 with all the same sources connected to the receiver and they displayed fine. If we bypass the receiver and plug directly into the projector, the picture is perfect. This leads us to believe that the issue lies in the receiver, but it is strange that it worked fine under the same conditions with the original projector. Does anyone have any thoughts on how we should go about trying to solve this problem, or what might be causing the issue? Do you mean its not showing on one side off the screen or you have some sort of over run of the image? Your last projector was a 1280 X 768. Does your receiver pass a full 1080P signal? I found your unit online. Looks like it should pass 1080 just fine. How long is the HDMI run? Are you scaling video with the receiver or just passing along the original signal? tmacd 09-18-10, 08:15 PM I've attached a a screenshot. Its as if the its pushed over in the left direction and up a little too much, and I can see the area where its not being projected on the right and the bottom, the "blank space". I don't think I am scaling video, though I know that the receiver can do this. I wasn't able to find the way to disable any potential scaling that might be occuring. Good call though, thats what I was thinking. Thanks for the speedy reply, and I'll keep poking around to find some sort of scaling or passthrough function and see where its set. Anyone, feel free to chime in, thanks! jagzjagz 10-10-10, 01:16 PM Does anyone know of any other projectors ($1000+ range) that have a faster color wheel than 2x? I could look into the w1000+, but it is hard to find up here in Canada. Or maybe some other LCD's that don't require as much maintenance w/ filters? Joesyah 10-10-10, 02:45 PM Does anyone know of any other projectors ($1000+ range) that have a faster color wheel than 2x? I am trying to avoid Epson because of all the additional maintenance required with filters, etc, otherwise I would have looked into that. Or maybe some other LCD's that don't require as much maintenance w/ filters? I understand what you mean about the filters. My home is a 100 yr old building. The dust is uncontrollable. If had an LCD I would most likely have dust blobs...no matter how much I cleaned the filter. The Optoma HD20 or the Vivitek are some other options. The W1000+ at this price would be worth waiting on IMHO. I see all the talk of bulbs dimming by 50% with some other manufacturers lamp life by 500 hrs. The lamp used in the W1000 doesn't follow that trait. I'm past 600 hrs and it will still put more lumens on the screen than most projectors new out the box very easily. I wouldn't be surprised if the lamp is still 90/95% as bright as what is was new. Ssseth 10-10-10, 02:59 PM DLP projectors just look so much more crisp and movie like to me as well. After owning a couple of DLP units and one LCD one I'll never go back to LCD. I'm over 1000 hours and to my eye it's still at least 75% as bright as when it was new. I'm actually glad it's worn in a bit, the first couple hundred hours could be hard on the eyes when it went to a scene with an all white background (lots of commercials are infamous for that). I'm in Canada as well, I ordered mine from projector people. Not sure if they stock it or not anymore though. jagzjagz 10-11-10, 03:21 AM Thanks guys. I guess I'm just trying to find the best 1000$ range projector for 1080p that won't risk the RBE effect (because in Canada, its kind of hard to beta test projectors at places like Bestbuy, Futureshop, or Visions because they rarely have them demo'ed). I am thinking of settling with the HD20 as I hear it is less susceptible to the rainbow effect (4x I believe?) but I will check on NCIX and other suppliers in the area. chumpchange21 10-12-10, 01:56 AM The W1000+ should be quite similar to the HD20 in that respect, as now it has a improved colorwheel of 3x. Early reviews also indicate that it has much higher picture quality. It may be worth considering, especially since it'll be much newer than the HD20 and you know technology only gets better ;) illnastyimpreza 10-12-10, 09:48 PM whats the ETA on the w1000+ ? One was DOA but I was still able to play with one, and the image is extremely sharp, looks great. Looks even better than my 30" dell I have two questions. 1) How high of a refresh rate should I be able to get? 60 seems to be the highest, but I thought this could go to 85hz. 2) The colors seem alittle washed and I know nothing about producing better color. Are there some known settings I could try that would make the colors seem alittle less washed? JoeFourMan 11-16-10, 06:33 AM Here is a pic of the Hoya lens. Just a little blob of blue tac keeps it secure and easy to remove. So far I have about 500 hrs on the bulb and the image is still bright and vivid, almost too much so. When the image does eventually dim I'll just take the filter off for a nice 50% brightness boost ( plus still running in Eco mode). Keep in mind these are my impressions of the image in "best" calibrated mode (eg Brilliant Color off). With my "bright" setting I can play games, Playstation move etc, with a lamp on or moderate natural light with no problems... and that's with the 50% reduction from the Hoya filter. To be honest I'd be interested to see what a stronger filter does to the image, I'd imagine for movies it'd look even better. The standard is 60 Hz,Blu ray is 24 Hz. This is why I ask why would you need 85 Hz. There's no reason to use it at that frequency. How are you displaying images without a computer, DVD player, cable box or something attached to the projector? If you don't have a real screen(painted or material), its not possible to achieve an accurate image. Washed out is the last word I would use to describe this projector. It is over-saturated in default mode and way too bright. tremor13 11-16-10, 04:19 PM I just got a W1000+ from PP today. I was warned away from it by PP, saying that the DLP units aren't as bright as the LCD units. Then again, the rep also told me that my IN72 was considered "high end" when it was new and that I was now looking at "entry level" projectors... (I got the IN72 for $399 after rebate from Woot. ). The W1000+ delivers just about the same picture brightness as the IN72... with ALL lights on in the room (12 can lights!!!). With a reasonable lighting situation, or better yet dimmed lights, the picture is outside the realm of comparability. My wife noticed a difference right away and she doesn't notice the difference between HD and SD on our 56" DLP set. 8 bulb hours later and I'm completely happy with the W1000+. I do have some ghosting with a component input, but that's probably some interference with a 35' run. I'll either track that down or switch to use that source as the second HDMI source. I decided to purchase a decent entry-level beamer and extremely happy with the w1000+. I am using basic settings proposed in ProjectorCentral review....I do see RBE the odd time in high contrast shots. The Standard mode is good for sports. IMO,the HD image is outstanding. This is a very bright and sharp projector (set on eco) and colours are superb....blacks are very good on HD. Price here is £750.....spare lamps £110. My decisions were based on 1) price. 2) image. 3) reliability. I love it, and the image settles down after 50+ hours......I am at 90 hours now and blacks are deeper. Short answer is a YES. The difference you'll see is worth more than 100 bucks. It goes beyond just the resolution. If the HD66's clarity is similar to the HD65,other than brightness..then the overall clarity and a reduction in image noise are VERY noticeable. Benq's are known for their clarity..they don't disappoint in this area..at all. That's unless you like a soft and fuzzy look to your images. I've seen a few others have the same issue when going through receivers..not sure if it is just Onkyo. My good friend has an Onkyo processor. His didn't work well as a switcher either. That was connected to a Benq W6000 and a Sharp flat panel TV. Sometimes he'd get a picture and sometimes he didn't. The Tech from Onkyo said it had something to do with the load of the HDMI cables. The W1000+ will sometimes resolve an image and sometimes not. As I said above, I've tried two W1000+ units in the matrix attached (disregard Bluray typo). It's pretty clear in where the problem lies. Joffer77 12-06-10, 11:29 AM I'm thinking it could be the receiver, since it works fine if I connect the BenQ directly to the PS3 (to much work doing that with the HTPC with my current setup). Or it might be the tv cable decoder box.. I got a small electric shock when I was fiddling with the cables on that box. Anyway, the three HDMI cables from my tv cable decoder, ps3 and htcp are identical. 1,5m I believe, 2m max. I think my HDMI cable from my receiver to my W1000+ is 10m. I will disconnect all HDMI cables from my receiver, and then connect one and one each day. I start with my HTPC today. Hopefully I get a picture with only one HDMI into the receiver. If I get a picture tomorrow after work, I will connect another source... Man I hate this stuff. It's supposed to just work (tm). flanntastic 12-07-10, 08:10 AM how many hours is the bulb good for???? anybody found them cheaper than $190??? ndjr 12-28-10, 12:16 PM The w1000+ is not 3D compatible is it??? josh96 12-28-10, 07:16 PM No the w1000+ is not 3d josh96 12-28-10, 07:19 PM Has anybody here had a chance to calibrate the 1000+ havent heard much or seen many posts about it dont know if its just not as popular as the others or is it still just too new yet? gregguy 12-29-10, 01:24 PM can you add the 3d-xl pavkage from optoma to the w1000+ to make it 3d? dlp link is there, isn;t it? also thinking of swapping my hd66 for the w1000+. really think 1080p might be worth it, but will I lose the 3d. any thoughts would really help thks. silverbug 12-30-10, 04:09 AM I have a minor issue may or may not be related to the switching issue. I just picked up my W1000+ today. I have only tested this with a HDTV PVR using component cable not HDMI. In the Basic Menu I disabled the auto input switching and turned OFF all other inputs but whenever a commercial comes on and the screen turns black, it searches for a signal and I get a quick message that it "found" the component signal again when it wasn't really lost. It's odd that turning off the auto input sensor doesn't work. Guessing maybe the auto input can't find your HDMI sources consistently. josh96 12-30-10, 09:41 AM I have mine hooked up through an onkyo reciever for all sources and havent had any problems with it finding a source but it is hooked up through an hdmi cable i havent tried any component cables yet Jeffcom 12-30-10, 10:38 AM josh96 I have mine hooked up through an onkyo reciever for all sources and havent had any problems with it finding a source but it is hooked up through an hdmi cable i havent tried any component cables yet I have the same setup. All HDMI through Onyko with one HDMI to W1000. No problems. Silverbug. Do you have more than one HDMI to PJ? If so, this might be the issue. Try disabling one of the imputs gregguy 3d-xl can you add the 3d-xl pavkage from optoma to the w1000+ to make it 3d? dlp link is there, isn;t it? also thinking of swapping my hd66 for the w1000+. really think 1080p might be worth it, but will I lose the 3d. any thoughts would really help thks.. That's a great question. I think not, since the Optoma ins 720p and the BenQ is 1080p. Maybe the specs for both units at Projector Central may help. silverbug 12-30-10, 11:56 AM Actually I have everything through a legacy component set up. No HDMI. All component switching is done through an old Yamaha component receiver. This was done back in 2005 pre-HDMI/DVI. It would be a small pain to upgrade to a 1.3 or 1.4 HDMI receiver and pull cable. (ironically I am eyeing Onkyo receivers but this thread may change my mind) Likely in a month or two. I am primarily a vinyl audiophile. The projector screen replacing a rattling obtrusive TV really opens up the soundstage. flanntastic 12-30-10, 07:07 PM how many hours is the bulb good for???? anybody found them cheaper than $190??? anybody? josh96 12-30-10, 07:11 PM 4000 standard 5000 economy mekkerl 12-31-10, 08:12 AM Has any BenQ-W1000+ owners considered the Epson 8350 (LCD) during their research? The extra brightness from the W1000+ and the cost savings won me over. In Canada the difference is probably closer to $600 (or more), and since I'm only paying $799 for the BenQ, it's really hard to justify the Epson for slightly better blacks. In a few years that $600 will likely pay for an LED projector that will blow both of these PJ's out of the water. Joffer77 01-06-11, 04:16 PM I will be sending my Onkyo back for repair.. lets see what they find out. josh96 01-08-11, 11:16 AM What are you using from your reciever to you projector hdmi if so how long and how many connections in between Joesyah 02-06-11, 06:52 PM With 1067 hours on the Benq..I'm amazed at how bright this unit is on the Superbowl! I forgot how bright this projector can get! I've considered selling it when I buy my next unit, but I'm not sure if that's a good idea. I may need to hold on to it for sports and ambient light viewing..simply amazing output for the hours viewed. At the current hours, it is still brighter than the brand new Epson 8350 I installed in someone's home recently, running in dynamic living room mode! chumpchange21 02-07-11, 08:19 PM Did anyone else recently look at the new BenQ W1100 and W1200 series? It's sporting a new 4x colorwheel, increased contrast ratio. It will also have Picture in Picture (PIP) capabilities. 20 watt speakers for those who care. A slimmer design for those who want to use it as a portable Home theater projector. They also have a new cool feature that allows you to unplug the projector and pack it away without waiting it to be cooled, because apparently there is an internal circuit board system that allows the projector to keep running to self cool it self after its unplugged. Pretty cool. But I think the most amazing feature that BenQ is boasting is that they are adding zoom onto the W1000 line (W1100 and W1200). It will have a large 1.5x zoom capability. And of course the fact that both of them will have 4x color wheels (this will be a + for those who have previously considered the W1000 series but turned away due to a slower color wheel). Every room and placement will be slightly different, so you should take a few minutes to calibrate it yourself to your room's specs. Aghhh Make sure you are calibrating with BrilliantColor on but with the intent of turning it off for best results. This may sound confusing but the reason I suggest it is two fold. 1. BrilliantColor introduces noise into the image when on (although brightness is amazing so good for certain situations) 2. Some calibration features are only available with BC on but their effects "stick" once set and BC turned off (custom color temp from memory) Further IMO you want to turn Clarity Control off and if you then find the image a little too soft increase sharpness to about 6. Hope that helps I have a few other tips if you can be more specific with what you don't like about the image. Standard Definition will ofcourse look softer and less detailed, if the source is good and bandwidth is high then SD can look very good. When I initially set up my W1000+, I found Brilliant Color-ON produced the 'pixel crawl' effect. Don't forget it takes 50-100 hours for the lamp to settle down, and there can be variations in individual lamps. So, for that 'burn-in' period I had BC-OFF and messed about with some user settings. My unit now has 642 hours clocked, I have Brilliant Color -ON and no 'pixel crawl' the image is superb. There are numerous calibration possibilities on the W1000+ not normally found on an entry level HD projector. These are my settings at present,( with lamp on eco mode)which I find well balanced......
